Abstract

In the case where strength and stress both follow exponential distributions, this paper considers the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the system reliability based on L ranked set sampling (LRSS). The proposed MLE is shown to have existence, uniqueness and asymptotic normality, and its asymptotic variance is obtained by the Fisher information matrix of LRSS. The values of asymptotic relative efficiencies show that the proposed MLE is always more efficient than the MLE using simple random sampling (SRS). However, the MLE using LRSS cannot be written in closed form. Therefore, the modified MLE is proposed using the technique replaced some terms in the maximum likelihood equations by their expectations. The newly modified MLE using LRSS is shown to be superior to the MLE using SRS. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a real data set on metastatic renal carcinoma study.  相似文献

The skew t distribution is a flexible parametric family to fit data, because it includes parameters that let us regulate skewness and kurtosis. A problem with this distribution is that, for moderate sample sizes, the maximum likelihood estimator of the shape parameter is infinite with positive probability. In order to try to solve this problem, Sartori (2006) has proposed using a modified score function as an estimating equation for the shape parameter. In this note we prove that the resulting modified maximum likelihood estimator is always finite, considering the degrees of freedom as known and greater than or equal to 2.  相似文献

In this article, several independent populations following exponential distribution with common location parameter and unknown and unequal scale parameters are considered. From these populations, several independent samples of generalized order statistics (gos) are drawn. Under the setup of gos, the problem of estimation of common location parameter is discussed and various estimators of common location parameter are derived. The authors obtained maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), modified MLE and uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator of common location parameter. Furthermore, under scaled-squared error loss function, a general inadmissibility result of invariant estimator is proposed. The derived results are further reduced for upper record values which is a special case of gos. Finally, simulation study and real life example are reported to show the performances of various competing estimators in terms of percentage risk improvement.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The likelihood function of a Gaussian hidden Markov model is unbounded, which is why the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is not consistent. A penalized MLE is introduced along with a rigorous consistency proof.  相似文献

This paper deals with the estimation of the parameters of a truncated gamma distribution over (0,τ), where τ is assumed to be a real number. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the maximum likelihood estimator(MLE). The probability of nonexistence of MLE is observed to be positive. A simulation study indicates that the modified maximum likelihood estimator and the mixed estimator, which exist with probability one,are to be preferred over MLE. The bias, the mean square error, and the probability of nearness form a basis of our simulation study.  相似文献

It is well known that the normal mixture with unequal variance has unbounded likelihood and thus the corresponding global maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is undefined. One of the commonly used solutions is to put a constraint on the parameter space so that the likelihood is bounded and then one can run the EM algorithm on this constrained parameter space to find the constrained global MLE. However, choosing the constraint parameter is a difficult issue and in many cases different choices may give different constrained global MLE. In this article, we propose a profile log likelihood method and a graphical way to find the maximum interior mode. Based on our proposed method, we can also see how the constraint parameter, used in the constrained EM algorithm, affects the constrained global MLE. Using two simulation examples and a real data application, we demonstrate the success of our new method in solving the unboundness of the mixture likelihood and locating the maximum interior mode.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We consider the use of modern likelihood asymptotics in the construction of confidence intervals for the parameter which determines the skewness of the distribution of the maximum/minimum of an exchangeable bivariate normal random vector. Simulation studies were conducted to investigate the accuracy of the proposed methods and to compare them to available alternatives. Accuracy is evaluated in terms of both coverage probability and expected length of the interval. We furthermore illustrate the suitability of our proposals by means of two data sets, consisting of, respectively, measurements taken on the brains of 10 mono-zygotic twins and measurements of mineral content of bones in the dominant and non-dominant arms for 25 elderly women.  相似文献

In this paper we study the distribution of the number of customers served in a busy period in the framework of modified power series distribution introduced by Gupta (197U) and obtain the moments and probability generating function of this distribution. We also study the maximum likelihood estimation of the parameter θand the variance and the asymptotic bias of the MLE are also obtained. The minimum variance unbiased estimate of θris investigated and an estimate of the probabilities is given.  相似文献

In the parametric regression model, the covariate missing problem under missing at random is considered. It is often desirable to use flexible parametric or semiparametric models for the covariate distribution, which can reduce a potential misspecification problem. Recently, a completely nonparametric approach was developed by [H.Y. Chen, Nonparametric and semiparametric models for missing covariates in parameter regression, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 99 (2004), pp. 1176–1189; Z. Zhang and H.E. Rockette, On maximum likelihood estimation in parametric regression with missing covariates, J. Statist. Plann. Inference 47 (2005), pp. 206–223]. Although it does not require a model for the covariate distribution or the missing data mechanism, the proposed method assumes that the covariate distribution is supported only by observed values. Consequently, their estimator is a restricted maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) rather than the global MLE. In this article, we show the restricted semiparametric MLE could be very misleading in some cases. We discuss why this problem occurs and suggest an algorithm to obtain the global MLE. Then, we assess the performance of the proposed method via some simulation experiments.  相似文献

We investigate several estimators of the negative binomial (NB) dispersion parameter for highly stratified count data for which the statistical model has a separate mean parameter for each stratum. If the number of samples per stratum is small then the model is highly parameterized and the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the NB dispersion parameter can be biased and inefficient. Some of the estimators we investigate include adjustments for the number of mean parameters to reduce bias. We extend other estimators that were developed for the iid case, to reduce bias when there are many mean parameters. We demonstrate using simulations that an adjusted double extended quasi-likelihood estimator we proposed gives much improved estimates compared to the MLE. Adjusted extended quasi-likelihood and adjusted maximum likelihood estimators also give much-improved results. We illustrate the various estimators with stratified random bottom trawl survey data for cod (Gadus morhua) off the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada.  相似文献

Abstract

Statistical distributions are very useful in describing and predicting real world phenomena. In many applied areas there is a clear need for the extended forms of the well-known distributions. Generally, the new distributions are more flexible to model real data that present a high degree of skewness and kurtosis. The choice of the best-suited statistical distribution for modeling data is very important.

In this article, we proposed an extended generalized Gompertz (EGGo) family of EGGo. Certain statistical properties of EGGo family including distribution shapes, hazard function, skewness, limit behavior, moments and order statistics are discussed. The flexibility of this family is assessed by its application to real data sets and comparison with other competing distributions. The maximum likelihood equations for estimating the parameters based on real data are given. The performances of the estimators such as maximum likelihood estimators, least squares estimators, weighted least squares estimators, Cramer-von-Mises estimators, Anderson-Darling estimators and right tailed Anderson-Darling estimators are discussed. The likelihood ratio test is derived to illustrate that the EGGo distribution is better than other nested models in fitting data set or not. We use R software for simulation in order to perform applications and test the validity of this model.  相似文献

This paper compares methods of estimation for the parameters of a Pareto distribution of the first kind to determine which method provides the better estimates when the observations are censored, The unweighted least squares (LS) and the maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) are presented for both censored and uncensored data. The MLE's are obtained using two methods, In the first, called the ML method, it is shown that log-likelihood is maximized when the scale parameter is the minimum sample value. In the second method, called the modified ML (MML) method, the estimates are found by utilizing the maximum likelihood value of the shape parameter in terms of the scale parameter and the equation for the mean of the first order statistic as a function of both parameters. Since censored data often occur in applications, we study two types of censoring for their effects on the methods of estimation: Type II censoring and multiple random censoring. In this study we consider different sample sizes and several values of the true shape and scale parameters.

Comparisons are made in terms of bias and the mean squared error of the estimates. We propose that the LS method be generally preferred over the ML and MML methods for estimating the Pareto parameter γ for all sample sizes, all values of the parameter and for both complete and censored samples. In many cases, however, the ML estimates are comparable in their efficiency, so that either estimator can effectively be used. For estimating the parameter α, the LS method is also generally preferred for smaller values of the parameter (α ≤4). For the larger values of the parameter, and for censored samples, the MML method appears superior to the other methods with a slight advantage over the LS method. For larger values of the parameter α, for censored samples and all methods, underestimation can be a problem.  相似文献

The maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and the likelihood ratio test (LRT) will be considered for making inference about the scale parameter of the exponential distribution in case of moving extreme ranked set sampling (MERSS). The MLE and LRT can not be written in closed form. Therefore, a modification of the MLE using the technique suggested by Maharota and Nanda (Biometrika 61:601–606, 1974) will be considered and this modified estimator will be used to modify the LRT to get a test in closed form for testing a simple hypothesis against one sided alternatives. The same idea will be used to modify the most powerful test (MPT) for testing a simple hypothesis versus a simple hypothesis to get a test in closed form for testing a simple hypothesis against one sided alternatives. Then it appears that the modified estimator is a good competitor of the MLE and the modified tests are good competitors of the LRT using MERSS and simple random sampling (SRS).  相似文献

Relative risks are often considered preferable to odds ratios for quantifying the association between a predictor and a binary outcome. Relative risk regression is an alternative to logistic regression where the parameters are relative risks rather than odds ratios. It uses a log link binomial generalised linear model, or log‐binomial model, which requires parameter constraints to prevent probabilities from exceeding 1. This leads to numerical problems with standard approaches for finding the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE), such as Fisher scoring, and has motivated various non‐MLE approaches. In this paper we discuss the roles of the MLE and its main competitors for relative risk regression. It is argued that reliable alternatives to Fisher scoring mean that numerical issues are no longer a motivation for non‐MLE methods. Nonetheless, non‐MLE methods may be worthwhile for other reasons and we evaluate this possibility for alternatives within a class of quasi‐likelihood methods. The MLE obtained using a reliable computational method is recommended, but this approach requires bootstrapping when estimates are on the parameter space boundary. If convenience is paramount, then quasi‐likelihood estimation can be a good alternative, although parameter constraints may be violated. Sensitivity to model misspecification and outliers is also discussed along with recommendations and priorities for future research.  相似文献

In this paper, the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is used to estimate the parameters of a modified Weibull distribution based on a complete sample. While maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) is the most used method for parameter estimation, MCMC has recently emerged as a good alternative. When applied to parameter estimation, MCMC methods have been shown to be easy to implement computationally, the estimates always exist and are statistically consistent, and their probability intervals are convenient to construct. Details of applying MCMC to parameter estimation for the modified Weibull model are elaborated and a numerical example is presented to illustrate the methods of inference discussed in this paper. To compare MCMC with MLE, a simulation study is provided, and the differences between the estimates obtained by the two algorithms are examined.  相似文献

Consider the problem of estimating the common location parameter of two exponential populations using record data when the scale parameters are unknown. We derive the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), the modified maximum likelihood estimator (MMLE) and the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator (UMVUE) of the common location parameter. Further, we derive a general result for inadmissibility of an equivariant estimator under the scaled-squared error loss function. Using this result, we conclude that the MLE and the UMVUE are inadmissible and better estimators are provided. A simulation study is conducted for comparing the performances of various competing estimators.  相似文献

A modified maximum likelihood estimator (MMLE) of scale parameter is considered under moving extremes ranked set sampling (MERSS), and its properties are obtained. For some usual scale distributions, we obtain explicit form of the MMLE and prove the MMLE is an unbiased estimator under MERSS. The simulation results show that the MMLE using MERSS is always more efficient than the MLE using simple random sampling, when the same sample size is used. The simulation results also show that the loss of efficiency in using the MMLE instead of the MLE is very small for small sample.  相似文献

In this study, two new types of estimators of the location and scale parameters are proposed having high efficiency and robustness; the dynamically weighted modified maximum likelihood (DWMML) and the combined dynamically weighted modified maximum likelihood (CDWMML) estimators. Three pairs of the DWMML and two pairs of the CDWMML estimators of the location and scale parameters are produced, namely, the DWMML1, the DWMML2 and the DWMML3, and the CDWMML1 and the CDWMML2 estimators, respectively. Based on the simulation results, the DWMML1 estimators of the location and scale parameters are almost fully efficient (under normality) and robust at the same time. The DWMML3 estimators are asymptotically fully efficient and more robust than the M-estimators. The DWMML2 estimators are a compromise between efficiency and robustness. The CDWMML1 and CDWMML2 estimators are jointly very efficient and robust. Particularly, the CDWMML1 and CDWMML2 estimators of the scale parameter are superior compared to the other estimators of the scale parameter.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article a generalization of the modified slash distribution is introduced. This model is based on the quotient of two independent random variables, whose distributions are a normal and a one-parameter gamma, respectively. The resulting distribution is a new model whose kurtosis is greater than other slash distributions. The probability density function, its properties, moments, and kurtosis coefficient are obtained. Inference based on moment and maximum likelihood methods is carried out. The multivariate version is also introduced. Two real data sets are considered in which it is shown that the new model fits better to symmetric data with heavy tails than other slash extensions previously introduced in literature.  相似文献

Nuisance parameter elimination is a central problem in capture–recapture modelling. In this paper, we consider a closed population capture–recapture model which assumes the capture probabilities varies only with the sampling occasions. In this model, the capture probabilities are regarded as nuisance parameters and the unknown number of individuals is the parameter of interest. In order to eliminate the nuisance parameters, the likelihood function is integrated with respect to a weight function (uniform and Jeffrey's) of the nuisance parameters resulting in an integrated likelihood function depending only on the population size. For these integrated likelihood functions, analytical expressions for the maximum likelihood estimates are obtained and it is proved that they are always finite and unique. Variance estimates of the proposed estimators are obtained via a parametric bootstrap resampling procedure. The proposed methods are illustrated on a real data set and their frequentist properties are assessed by means of a simulation study.  相似文献
