Abstract

In this article, we propose the best linear unbiased estimators (BLUEs) and best linear invariant estimators (BLIEs) for the unknown parameters of location-scale family of distributions based on double-ranked set sampling (DRSS) using perfect and imperfect rankings. These estimators are then compared with the BLUEs and BLIEs based on ranked set sampling (RSS). It is shown that under perfect ranking, the proposed estimators are uniformly better than the BLUEs and BLIEs obtained via RSS. We also propose the best linear unbiased quantile (BLUQ) and the best linear invariant quantile (BLIQ) estimators for normal distribution under DRSS. It is observed that the proposed quantile estimators are more efficient than the BLUQ and BLIQ estimators based on RSS for both perfect and imperfect orderings.  相似文献

The authors show how ranked set sampling, both balanced and unbalanced, can be extended to ordered categorical variables with the goal of estimating the probabilities of all categories. They use ordinal logistic regression to aid in the ranking of the ordinal variable of interest. They also propose an optimal allocation scheme and methods for implementing it under either perfect or imperfect rankings. Results from a simulation study using data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey indicate that the use of ordinal logistic regression in ranking leads to substantial gains in precision for estimation of cell probabilities.  相似文献

In surveys of natural resources in agriculture, ecology, fisheries, forestry, environmental management, etc., cost-effective sampling methods are of major concern. In this paper, we propose a two-stage cluster sampling (TSCS) in integration with the hybrid ranked set sampling (HRSS)—named TSCS-HRSS—in the second stage of sampling for estimating the population mean. The TSCS-HRSS scheme encompasses several existing ranked set sampling (RSS) schemes and may help in selecting a smaller number of units to rank. It is shown both theoretically and numerically that the TSCS-HRSS provides an unbiased estimator of the population mean and it is more precise than the mean estimators based on TSCS with SRS and RSS schemes. An unbiased estimator of the variance of the proposed mean estimator is also derived. A similar trend is observed when studying the impact of imperfect rankings on the performance of the TSCS-HRSS based mean estimator.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling is a cost efficient sampling technique when actually measuring sampling units is difficult but ranking them is relatively easy. For a family of symmetric location-scale distributions with known location parameter, we consider a best linear unbiased estimator for the scale parameter. Instead of using original ranked set samples, we propose to use the absolute deviations of the ranked set samples from the location parameter. We demonstrate that this new estimator has smaller variance than the best linear unbiased estimator using original ranked set samples. Optimal allocation in the absolute value of ranked set samples is also discussed for the estimation of the scale parameter when the location parameter is known. Finally, we perform some sensitivity analyses for this new estimator when the location parameter is unknown but estimated using ranked set samples and when the ranking of sampling units is imperfect.  相似文献

The paper examines the effect of the set size upon the performance (reciprocal variance) of balanced ranked set sampling for estimation of a population mean. Performance is shown to be monotone increasing with the set size for the wide class of ranking models that satisfy a property called coherence. This class includes perfect ranking as well as ranking by concomitant variable. Stochastic ranking models based upon size-biased permutations are also shown to satisfy coherence and, consequently, monotonicity.  相似文献

A robust estimate of the correlation coefficient for a bivariate normal distribution using balanced ranked set sampling is studied. We show that this estimate is at least as efficient as the corresponding estimate based on simple random sampling and highly efficient compared to the maximum likelihood estimate using balanced ranked set sampling. The estimate is robust to common ranking errors. Small sample performance of the estimate is studied by simulation under imperfect and perfect ranking. A variance stabilizing transformation for the confidence interval of the correlation coefficient is obtained.  相似文献

In this article, we propose new cumulative sum (CUSUM) control charts using the ordered ranked set sampling (RSS) and ordered double RSS schemes, with the perfect and imperfect rankings, for monitoring the variability of a normally distributed process. The run length characteristics of the proposed CUSUM charts are computed using the Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed CUSUM charts are compared in terms of the average and standard deviation of run lengths with their existing competitor CUSUM charts based on simple random sampling. It turns out that the proposed CUSUM charts with the perfect and imperfect rankings are more sensitive than the existing CUSUM charts based on the sample range and standard deviation. A similar trend is present when these CUSUM charts are compared with the fast initial response features. An example is also used to demonstrate the implementation and working of the proposed CUSUM charts.  相似文献

Different quality control charts for the sample mean are developed using ranked set sampling (RSS), and two of its modifications, namely median ranked set sampling (MRSS) and extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS). These new charts are compared to the usual control charts based on simple random sampling (SRS) data. The charts based on RSS or one of its modifications are shown to have smaller average run length (ARL) than the classical chart when there is a sustained shift in the process mean. The MRSS and ERSS methods are compared with RSS and SRS data, it turns out that MRSS dominates all other methods in terms of the out-of-control ARL performance. Real data are collected using the RSS, MRSS, and ERSS in cases of perfect and imperfect ranking. These data sets are used to construct the corresponding control charts. These charts are compared to usual SRS chart. Throughout this study we are assuming that the underlying distribution is normal. A check of the normality for our example data set indicated that the normality assumption is reasonable.  相似文献

The basic assumption underlying the concept of ranked set sampling is that actual measurement of units is expensive, whereas ranking is cheap. This may not be true in reality in certain cases where ranking may be moderately expensive. In such situations, based on total cost considerations, k-tuple ranked set sampling is known to be a viable alternative, where one selects k units (instead of one) from each ranked set. In this article, we consider estimation of the distribution function based on k-tuple ranked set samples when the cost of selecting and ranking units is not ignorable. We investigate estimation both in the balanced and unbalanced data case. Properties of the estimation procedure in the presence of ranking error are also investigated. Results of simulation studies as well as an application to a real data set are presented to illustrate some of the theoretical findings.  相似文献

In the statistical process control literature, there exists several improved quality control charts based on cost-effective sampling schemes, including the ranked set sampling (RSS) and median RSS (MRSS). A generalized cost-effective RSS scheme has been recently introduced for efficiently estimating the population mean, namely varied L RSS (VLRSS). In this article, we propose a new exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart for monitoring the process mean using VLRSS, named the EWMA-VLRSS chart, under both perfect and imperfect rankings. The EWMA-VLRSS chart encompasses the existing EWMA charts based on RSS and MRSS (named the EWMA-RSS and EWMA-MRSS charts). We use extensive Monte Carlo simulations to compute the run length characteristics of the EWMA-VLRSS chart. The proposed chart is then compared with the existing EWMA charts. It is found that, with either perfect or imperfect rankings, the EWMA-VLRSS chart is more sensitive than the EWMA-RSS and EWMA-MRSS charts in detecting small to large shifts in the process mean. A real dataset is also used to explain the working of the EWMA-VLRSS chart.  相似文献

It is well known that a ranked set sample under perfect ranking provides more information than an i.i.d. sample of the same size. Then it may be interesting to study how much information is lost due to imperfect ranking. In this article, we consider some ranking mechanisms and study the loss of the Fisher information according to the degree of imperfect ranking. Then we continue to discuss the optimal combination of the sample size and number of strata in terms of maximizing the Fisher information for the bivariate normal and exponential distributions.  相似文献

A mixture of order statistics is a random variable whose distribution is a finite mixture of the distributions for order statistics. Such mixtures show up in the literature on ranked-set sampling and related sampling schemes as models for imperfect rankings. In this paper, we derive an algorithm for computing the probability that independent mixtures of order statistics come in a particular order. The algorithm is far faster than previous proposals from the literature. As an application, we show that the algorithm can be used to create Kolmogorov–Smirnov-type confidence bands that adjust for the presence of imperfect rankings.  相似文献

Recently, a hybrid ranked set sampling (HRSS) scheme has been proposed in the literature. The HRSS scheme encompasses several existing ranked set sampling (RSS) schemes, and it is a cost-effective alternative to the classical RSS and double RSS schemes. In this paper, we propose an improved estimator for estimating the cumulative distribution function (CDF) using HRSS. It is shown, both theoretically and numerically, that the CDF estimator under HRSS scheme is unbiased and its variance is always less than the variance of the CDF estimator with simple random sampling (SRS). An unbiased estimator of the variance of CDF estimator using HRSS is also derived. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we also study the performances of the proposed and existing CDF estimators under both perfect and imperfect rankings. It turns out that the proposed CDF estimator is by far a superior alternative to the existing CDF estimators with SRS, RSS and L-RSS schemes. For a practical application, a real data set is considered on the bilirubin level of babies in neonatal intensive care.  相似文献

This paper develops parametric inference for the parameters of location-scale family of distributions based on a ranked set sample. Likelihood function incorporates within-set ranking errors into the model through a missing data mechanism. The maximum likelihood estimators of the location-scale and missing data model parameters are constructed and an EM-algorithm is provided. It is shown that the proposed estimator is robust against imperfect ranking error and provides higher efficiency over its competitors.  相似文献

We study the non-parametric estimation of a continuous distribution function F based on the partially rank-ordered set (PROS) sampling design. A PROS sampling design first selects a random sample from the underlying population and uses judgement ranking to rank them into partially ordered sets, without measuring the variable of interest. The final measurements are then obtained from one of the partially ordered sets. Considering an imperfect PROS sampling procedure, we first develop the empirical distribution function (EDF) estimator of F and study its theoretical properties. Then, we consider the problem of estimating F, where the underlying distribution is assumed to be symmetric. We also find a unique admissible estimator of F within the class of nondecreasing step functions with jumps at observed values and show the inadmissibility of the EDF. In addition, we introduce a smooth estimator of F and discuss its theoretical properties. Finally, we expand on various numerical illustrations of our results via several simulation studies and a real data application and show the advantages of PROS estimates over their counterparts under the simple random and ranked set sampling designs.  相似文献

In this article, two different types of precedence tests, each with two different test statistics, based on ranked set samples for testing the equality of two distributions are discussed. The exact null distributions of proposed test statistics are derived, critical values are tabulated for both set size and number of cycles up to 8, and the exact power functions of these two types of precedence tests under the Lehmann alternative are derived. Then, the power values of these two test procedures and their competitors based on simple random samples and based on ranked set samples are compared under the Lehmann alternative exactly and also under a location-shift alternative by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, the impact of imperfect ranking is discussed and some concluding remarks are presented.  相似文献

We develop an omnibus two-sample test for ranked-set sampling (RSS) data. The test statistic is the conditional probability of seeing the observed sequence of ranks in the combined sample, given the observed sequences within the separate samples. We compare the test to existing tests under perfect rankings, finding that it can outperform existing tests in terms of power, particularly when the set size is large. The test does not maintain its level under imperfect rankings. However, one can create a permutation version of the test that is comparable in power to the basic test under perfect rankings and also maintains its level under imperfect rankings. Both tests extend naturally to judgment post-stratification, unbalanced RSS, and even RSS with multiple set sizes. Interestingly, the tests have no simple random sampling analog.  相似文献

We study the use of ranked set sampling (RSS) with binary outcomes in cluster-randomized designs (CRDs), where a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) is used to model the hierarchical data structure involved. Under the GLMM-based framework, we propose three different approaches to estimate the treatment effect, including the nonparametric (NP), maximum likelihood (ML) and pseudo likelihood (PL) estimators. We investigate their asymptotic properties and examine their finite-sample performance via simulation. Based on these three RSS estimators, we further develop procedures for testing the existence of the treatment effect. We examine the power and size of our proposed RSS tests and compare them with existing tests based on simple random sampling (SRS). All the proposed RSS estimation and test methods are illustrated with two data examples, one for rare events and the other for non-extreme events. Throughout our investigations, we also consider the possible effect of imperfect ranking. Among the proposed methods, we provide recommendations on whether to use RSS rather than SRS with binary outcomes in CRDs and, if yes, when to use which RSS method. In this study, we considered a hypothesis test for the difference of two population means using ranked set sampling. We proposed a test statistic for this hypothesis test with more than one cycle under normality. We also investigate the performance of this test statistic, when the assumptions hold and are violated. For this reason, we investigate the type I error and power rates of tests under normality with equal and unequal variances, non-normality with equal and unequal variances. We also examine the performance of this test under imperfect ranking case. The simulation results show that derived test performs quite well.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we consider the best linear unbiased estimators (BLUEs) based on double ranked set sampling (DRSS) and ordered DRSS (ODRSS) schemes for the simple linear regression model with replicated observations. We assume three symmetric distributions for the random error term, i.e., normal, Laplace and some scale contaminated normal distributions. The proposed BLUEs under DRSS (BLUEs-DRSS) and ODRSS (BLUEs-ODRSS) are compared with the BLUEs based on ordered simple random sampling (OSRS), ranked set sampling (RSS), and ordered RSS (ORSS) schemes. These estimators are compared in terms of relative efficiency (RE), RE of determinant (RED), and RE of trace (RET). It is found that the BLUEs-ODRSS are uniformly better than the BLUEs based on OSRS, RSS, ORSS, and DRSS schemes. We also compare the estimators based on imperfect RSS (IRSS) schemes. It is worth mentioning here that the BLUEs under ordered imperfect DRSS (OIDRSS) are better than their counterparts based on IRSS, ordered IRSS (OIRSS), and imperfect DRSS (IDRSS) methods. Moreover, for sensitivity analysis of the BLUEs, we calculate REs and REDs of the BLUEs under the assumption of normality when in fact the parent distribution follows a non normal symmetric distribution. It turns out that even under violation of normality assumptions, BLUEs of the intercept and the slope parameters are found to be unbiased with equal REs under each sampling scheme. It is also observed that the BLUEs under ODRSS are more efficient than the existing BLUEs.  相似文献
