Chinese women's grand festival, the Ninth National Women's Congress, will convene in Beijing in August. The congress is held every five years, in accordance with the All-China Women's Federation's (ACWF) regulations. The congress this year willfocus on uniting and mobilizing women nationwide in the struggle to realize comfortable living standards.

Jiang Zemin Receives New ACWF Leadership

FOUR days after the adjournment of the 8th Chinese Women's National Congress, President Jiang Zemin received all the newly-elected members of the executive committee and several deputies at Zhongnanhai. Gu Xiulian, Vice President and the First Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), briefed Jiang on the congress. She said deputies had reached consensus on certain issues: that women should capitalize on their abilities in the overall social participation; that the uplifting of women's quality should be seen as a long-term strategy; and that women's development requires a supportive social environment. The All-China Women's Federation has carried out a nationwide poll about the revision of the Marriage Law. Four thousand people over 18 years old and chosen atrandom, were polled. This table shows the result—public opinion on what should be revised in the new Marriage Law:     

A Grand Gathering in Autumn

On behalf of 600 million Chinese women, over 1,300 deputies came to Beijing to attend the Eighth Chinese Women's National Congress. According to the materials supplied by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), 43.67 percent of the deputies to this congress were engaged in women's work; 56.33 percent were representatives from the fields of industry and agriculture, commerce, trade and finance, science and technology, education, medicine, social welfare, media, law and the army; one percent were from Taiwan; one percent were returned overseas Chinese or the family dependents of overseas Chinese. All 55 ethnicities were represented; ethnic delegates accounted for 15.5 percent of the total. The average age of these deputies was 46.

The Third National Fitness Activity for Hundreds of Millions of Women was held in Beijing from April 22-24,2007.The event was sponsored by the All-China Women's Federation(ACWF)and the General Administration of Sports of China,and it was organized by the Beijing Women's Federation and the Beijing Sports Bureau.

Conference Discusses China's Changing Families

MARCH 26, 1994, a seminar titled "China's Traditional Culture and Changes in the Family" was convened at the Hong Kong International Conference Center. The seminar was co-sponsored by the Women's Institute of the All-China Women's Federation and the Hong Kong Women's Foundation.     

National Honor For Rural Women

NEWLY literate women are taking the lead in eliminating rural poverty through literacy. Ten of the nation's best newly literate women were selected by'the All-China Women's Federation to attend a grand prize awards ceremony held in Beijing on September 7, 1996, just before the World Anti-illiteracy Day. The All-China Women's Federation has set a goal of wiping out illiteracy

Follow-up Actions of the FWCW

In order to implement the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women, the Chinese government issued and implemented the "Program for the Development of Chinese Women, 1996-2000." The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), in accordance with the 12 priority areas set by the Platform for Action, has taken active and fruitful measures in such areas as poverty-relief for women, education for women, reemployment for laid-off women workers, women's political participation, the protection of women's rights and interests, cultivating family culture, the protection of children's rights and interests, international communication, etc. Chinese women are gearing up for the 21st century from a new position.

THE All-China Women's Federation(ACWF) has established some 60.000 basic units in Party and government organizations above the county level throughout the country. The units include women's committees in 78 ministries and commissions of the State Council Program Director Ms. Zhang Xiaoyuan noted that the ACWF has extended its basic organizations from villages and neighborhoods to tens of millions of women workers and cadres nationwide since 1993. The effort has opened a new network serving urban professional women, and meets the new demands the reform and opening have placed on work for women. The results have thus proved highly beneficial.
