This paper investigates estimation of parameters in a combination of the multivariate linear model and growth curve model, called a generalized GMANOVA model. Making analogy between the outer product of data vectors and covariance yields an approach to directly do least squares to covariance. An outer product least squares estimator of covariance (COPLS estimator) is obtained and its distribution is presented if a normal assumption is imposed on the error matrix. Based on the COPLS estimator, two-stage generalized least squares estimators of the regression coefficients are derived. In addition, asymptotic normalities of these estimators are investigated. Simulation studies have shown that the COPLS estimator and two-stage GLS estimators are alternative competitors with more efficiency in the sense of sample mean, standard deviations and mean of the variance estimates to the existing ML estimator in finite samples. An example of application is also illustrated.  相似文献

In longitudinal data analysis, efficient estimation of regression coefficients requires a correct specification of certain covariance structure, and efficient estimation of covariance matrix requires a correct specification of mean regression model. In this article, we propose a general semiparametric model for the mean and the covariance simultaneously using the modified Cholesky decomposition. A regression spline-based approach within the framework of generalized estimating equations is proposed to estimate the parameters in the mean and the covariance. Under regularity conditions, asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators are established. Extensive simulation is conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed estimator and in the end a real data set is analysed using the proposed approach.  相似文献

The use of matched pairs has been criticized as being less efficient than estimators based on random samples. This paper compares the mean square error of an analysis of covariance estimator based on random samples with two estimators based on caliper matched pairs. The first of these is a simple mean difference estimator and the second a regression estimator suggested by Rubin (1973b). Under conditions which commonly occur in epidemiologic case-control studies, both of the matched pair estimators can have smaller mean square errors than analysis o f covariance estimator. When there is a weak relationship between the matching and response variate, the mean difference estimator has a lower mean square error than the regression estimator.  相似文献

There is a tendency for the true variability of feasible GLS estimators to be understated by asymptotic standard errors. For estimation of SUR models, this tendency becomes more severe in large equation systems when estimation of the error covariance matrix, C, becomes problematic. We explore a number of potential solutions involving the use of improved estimators for the disturbance covariance matrix and bootstrapping. In particular, Ullah and Racine (1992) have recently introduced a new class of estimators for SUR models that use nonparametric kernel density estimation techniques. The proposed estimators have the same structure as the feasible GLS estimator of Zellner (1962) differing only in the choice of estimator for C. Ullah and Racine (1992) prove that their nonparametric density estimator of C can be expressed as Zellner's original estimator plus a positive definite matrix that depends on the smoothing parameter chosen for the density estimation. It is this structure of the estimator that most interests us as it has the potential to be especially useful in large equation systems.

Atkinson and Wilson (1992) investigated the bias in the conventional and bootstrap estimators of coefficient standard errors in SUR models. They demonstrated that under certain conditions the former were superior, but they caution that neither estimator uniformly dominated and hence bootstrapping provides little improvement in the estimation of standard errors for the regression coefficients. Rilstone and Veal1 (1996) argue that an important qualification needs to be made to this somewhat negative conclusion. They demonstrated that bootstrapping can result in improvements in inferences if the procedures are applied to the t-ratios rather than to the standard errors. These issues are explored for the case of large equation systems and when bootstrapping is combined with improved covariance estimation.  相似文献

This paper discusses the estimation of regression parameters after summarizing the data by a covariance matrix of the concatenated vector of explanatory variables and response variable. A robust estimate of the covariance matrix leads to a robust regression estimator. An M-estimator at the covariance estimation step is studied in the paper, and the resulting regression estimator is compared to a few previously proposed robust regression estimators.  相似文献

It is common for linear regression models that the error variances are not the same for all observations and there are some high leverage data points. In such situations, the available literature advocates the use of heteroscedasticity consistent covariance matrix estimators (HCCME) for the testing of regression coefficients. Primarily, such estimators are based on the residuals derived from the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator that itself can be seriously inefficient in the presence of heteroscedasticity. To get efficient estimation, many efficient estimators, namely the adaptive estimators are available but their performance has not been evaluated yet when the problem of heteroscedasticity is accompanied with the presence of high leverage data. In this article, the presence of high leverage data is taken into account to evaluate the performance of the adaptive estimator in terms of efficiency. Furthermore, our numerical work also evaluates the performance of the robust standard errors based on this efficient estimator in terms of interval estimation and null rejection rate (NRR).  相似文献

The common principal components (CPC) model provides a way to model the population covariance matrices of several groups by assuming a common eigenvector structure. When appropriate, this model can provide covariance matrix estimators of which the elements have smaller standard errors than when using either the pooled covariance matrix or the per group unbiased sample covariance matrix estimators. In this article, a regularized CPC estimator under the assumption of a common (or partially common) eigenvector structure in the populations is proposed. After estimation of the common eigenvectors using the Flury–Gautschi (or other) algorithm, the off-diagonal elements of the nearly diagonalized covariance matrices are shrunk towards zero and multiplied with the orthogonal common eigenvector matrix to obtain the regularized CPC covariance matrix estimates. The optimal shrinkage intensity per group can be estimated using cross-validation. The efficiency of these estimators compared to the pooled and unbiased estimators is investigated in a Monte Carlo simulation study, and the regularized CPC estimator is applied to a real dataset to demonstrate the utility of the method.  相似文献

We consider an unbiased estimator of a function of mean value parameters, which is not efficient. This inefficient estimator is correlated with a residual vector. Thus, if a unit dispersion is unknown, it is impossible to determine the correct confidence region for a function of mean value parameters via a standard estimator of an unknown dispersion with the exception of the case when the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator is considered in a model with a special covariance structure such that the OLS and the generalized least squares (GLS) estimator are the same, that is the OLS estimator is efficient. Two different estimators of a unit dispersion independent of an inefficient estimator are derived in a singular linear statistical model. Their quality was verified by simulations for several types of experimental designs. Two new estimators of the unit dispersion were compared with the standard estimators based on the GLS and the OLS estimators of the function of the mean value parameters. The OLS estimator was considered in the incorrect model with a different covariance matrix such that the originally inefficient estimator became efficient. The numerical examples led to a slightly surprising result which seems to be due to data behaviour. An example from geodetic practice is presented in the paper.  相似文献

The estimation of the mean of an univariate normal population with unknown variance is considered when uncertain non-sample prior information is available. Alternative estimators are defined to incorporate both the sample as well as the non-sample information in the estimation process. Some of the important statistical properties of the restricted, preliminary test, and shrinkage estimators are investigated. The performances of the estimators are compared based on the criteria of unbiasedness and mean square error in order to search for a ‘best’ estimator. Both analytical and graphical methods are explored. There is no superior estimator that uniformly dominates the others. However, if the non-sample information regarding the value of the mean is close to its true value, the shrinkage estimator over performs the rest of the estimators. A model involving autocorrelated random effects and sampling errors is proposed for small-area estimation, using both time-series and cross-sectional data. The sampling errors are assumed to have a known block-diagonal covariance matrix. This model is an extension of a well-known model, due to Fay and Herriot (1979), for cross-sectional data. A two-stage estimator of a small-area mean for the current period is obtained under the proposed model with known autocorrelation, by first deriving the best linear unbiased prediction estimator assuming known variance components, and then replacing them with their consistent estimators. Extending the approach of Prasad and Rao (1986, 1990) for the Fay-Herriot model, an estimator of mean squared error (MSE) of the two-stage estimator, correct to a second-order approximation for a small or moderate number of time points, T, and a large number of small areas, m, is obtained. The case of unknown autocorrelation is also considered. Limited simulation results on the efficiency of two-stage estimators and the accuracy of the proposed estimator of MSE are présentés.  相似文献

In this article, we consider an inference for a covariance matrix under two-step monotone incomplete sample. The maximum likelihood estimator of the mean vector is unbiased but that of the covariance matrix is biased. We derive an unbiased estimator for the covariance matrix using some fundamental properties of the Wishart matrix. The properties of the estimators are investigated and the accuracies are checked by a numerical simulation.  相似文献

Stein-rule and other improved estimators have scarcely been used in empirical work. One major reason is that it is not easy to obtain precision measures for these estimators. In this paper, we derive unbiased estimators for both the mean squared error (MSE) and the scaled MSE matrices of a class of Stein-type estimators. Our derivation provides the basis for measuring the estimators' precision and constructing confidence bands. Comparisons are made between these MSE estimators and the least squares covariance estimator. For illustration, the methodology is applied to data on energy consumption.  相似文献

Uniformly minimum-variance unbiased (UMVU) estimators of the total risk and the mean-squared-error (MSE) matrix of the Stein estimator for the multivariate normal mean with unknown covariance matrix are proposed. The estimated MSE matrix is helpful in identifying the components which contribute most to the total risk. This paper is concerned with classical statistical estimation of the reliability function for the exponential density with unknown mean failure time θ, and with a known and fixed mission time τ. The minimum variance unbiased (MVU) estimator and the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator are reviewed and their mean square errors compared for different sample sizes. These comparisons serve also to extend previous work, and reinforce further the nonexistence of a uniformly best estimator. A class of shrunken estimators is then defined, and it produces a shrunken quasi-estimator and a shrunken estimator. The mean square errors for both these estimators are compared to the mean square errors of the MVU and ML estimators, and the new estimators are found to perform very well. Unfortunately, these estimators are difficult to compute for practical applications. A second class of estimators, which is easy to compute is also developed. Its mean square error properties are compared to the other estimators, and it outperforms all the contending estimators over the high and low reliability parameter space. Since, for all the estimators, analytical mean square error comparisons are not tractable, extensive numerical analyses are done in obtaining both the exact small sample and large sample results.  相似文献

We discuss three classes of bivariate symmetry models and study the estimation of their distribution functions (DFs). Under radial symmetry, an estimator based on the mean of the empirical and survival DFs is considered. For exchangeable symmetry, an estimator based on the mean of the empirical DF and its exchangeable image is presented. At their intersection, we define radial exchangeability and study estimation of its DF. The symmetrized estimators coincide with the non parametric maximum likelihood estimators of the DF under each model. We obtain their mean and variance and state their asymptotic normality. The relative efficiency of the estimators for the bivariate normal distribution is obtained.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss an estimation problem of the mean in the inverse Gaussian distribution with a known coefficient of variation. Two types of linear estimators for the mean, the linear minimum variance unbiased estimator and the linear minimum mean squared error estimator, are constructed by using the squared error loss function and their properties are examined. It is observed that, for small samples the performance of the proposed estimators is better than that of the maximum likelihood estimator, when the coefficient of variation is large.  相似文献

Estimation of two normal means with an order restriction is considered when a covariance matrix is known. It is shown that restricted maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) stochastically dominates both estimators proposed by Hwang and Peddada [Confidence interval estimation subject to order restrictions. Ann Statist. 1994;22(1):67–93] and Peddada et al. [Estimation of order-restricted means from correlated data. Biometrika. 2005;92:703–715]. The estimators are also compared under the Pitman nearness criterion and it is shown that the MLE is closer to ordered means than the other two estimators. Estimation of linear functions of ordered means is also considered and a necessary and sufficient condition on the coefficients is given for the MLE to dominate the other estimators in terms of mean squared error.  相似文献

Covariance matrices play an important role in many multivariate techniques and hence a good covariance estimation is crucial in this kind of analysis. In many applications a sparse covariance matrix is expected due to the nature of the data or for simple interpretation. Hard thresholding, soft thresholding, and generalized thresholding were therefore developed to this end. However, these estimators do not always yield well-conditioned covariance estimates. To have sparse and well-conditioned estimates, we propose doubly shrinkage estimators: shrinking small covariances towards zero and then shrinking covariance matrix towards a diagonal matrix. Additionally, a richness index is defined to evaluate how rich a covariance matrix is. According to our simulations, the richness index serves as a good indicator to choose relevant covariance estimator.  相似文献

This paper develops the theory of calibration estimation and proposes calibration approach alternative to existing calibration estimators for estimating population mean of the study variable using auxiliary variable in stratified sampling. The theory of new calibration estimation is given and optimum weights are derived. A simulation study is carried out to performance of the proposed calibration estimator with other existing calibration estimators. The results reveal that the proposed calibration estimators are more efficient than Tracy et al., Singh et al., Singh calibration estimators of the population mean.  相似文献
