Therapy in/and/of/by the World

The author begins by owning the personal circumstances and history that inspired him to write. He moves on to discuss how certain changes in Western political processes and structures deserve the tag of ‘transformative politics’. A third section explores in a critical spirit whether or not therapists can have a collective impact in relation to current pressing social and political problems. The next section, entitled ‘the inner politician’, offers an experiential approach to the politics that irradiate people's inner worlds and personal stories. Finally, the author reflects on the links between therapy, politics and spirituality.     

Ethnomethodology from/as/to Business

In this posthumously published article, Melvin Pollner reflects on the origins and development of ethnomethodology, especially the version associated with Harold Garfinkel. It explores both literal and figurative connections between Garfinkel’s ethnomethodology and the world and practices of “business.” The article suggests a variety of ways in which notions and metaphors born of business are incorporated into Garfinkel’s program, including, most prominently, the concepts of accounts and accountability. Robert M. Emerson and James A. Holstein assembled and edited the final text.     

Mobile sociology1

This article seeks to develop a manifesto for a sociology concerned with the diverse mobilities of peoples, objects, images, information, and wastes; and of the complex interdependencies between, and social consequences of, such diverse mobilities. A number of key concepts relevant for such a sociology are elaborated: 'gamekeeping', networks, fluids, scapes, flows, complexity and iteration. The article concludes by suggesting that a 'global civil society' might constitute the social base of a sociology of mobilities as we move into the twenty-first century.     

Categorical attribute based centrality: E–I and G–F centrality

In a paper examining informal networks and organizational crisis, Krackhardt and Stern (1988) proposed a measure assessing the extent to which relations in a network were internal to a group as opposed to external. They called their measure the E–I index. The measure is now in wide use and is implemented in standard network packages such as UCINET ( Borgatti et al., 2002). The measure is based on a partition-based degree centrality measure and as such can be extended to other centrality measures and group level data. We explore extensions to closeness, betweenness and eigenvector centrality, and show how to apply the technique to sets of subgroups that do not form a partition. In addition, the extension to betweenness suggests a linkage to the Gould and Fernandez brokerage measures, which we explore.     

Post/past-'Orientalism' Orientalism and its dis/re-orientation

Abstract

In Orientalism (1978) Edward Said articulated more a cultural filter than a cultural divide, through a catalog of historical documents on the west's representation of the east, enabling readers to share a vocabulary that has now become a part of American intellectual history. In the last quarter century Orientalism has acquired a 'symbolic value' that was at best present as a 'potential value', thus realizing itself; from its initial position as an object of cultural study it has now become a subject imbued with the agency to change perception and understanding. It has problematized Orientalism itself and associated issues of the new globalism, such as immigration, diaspora, boundary crossings, cross-border terrorism, mixed ethnicities, international and inter-racial adoptions, and travel. The article focuses on the new social, political and economic faces of the old Orientalist attitudes, and calls for a radical revision of history.     

Clarification on Braeburn's CAM2038/Brixadi/Buvidal

In our recent article “Sublocade: Why a placebo arm?” (see ADAW, March 11), we referred to the investigational medication CAM2038, an injectable (weekly subcutaneous depot) form of buprenorphine that is competing with Sublocade in the buprenorphine market. To make the terminology clear, the name of the investigational medication, developed by Braeburn in partnership with Camurus (Braeburn's European partner), is Brixadi. In Europe and Australia, however, the product is approved and marketed by Camurus under the trade name Buvidal. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted tentative approval to Brixadi in December 2018, but Sublocade has exclusivity. “Brixadi's clinical development program was designed with input from the FDA,” said Sonnie Kim, Pharm.D., Braeburn vice president and head of medical affairs, in an email to ADAW. CAM2038 was found effective in Phase 2 research (see ADAW, June 26, 2017). Not either/or but both/and: An Academic/field partnership in practice

Abstract

The relationship between academia and the field and between theory and practice is often characterised in both the literature and the everyday practice of social work as either one or the other. In this paper, the author argues for a constructive integration of both/and rather than either/or. The paper reports on a constructive organisational partnership between academia and a field of practice that supports a both/and view.
