In many estimation problems the parameter of interest is known,a priori, to belong to a proper subspace of the natural parameter space. Although useful in practice this type of additional information can lead to surprising theoretical difficulties. In this paper the problem of minimax estimation of a Bernoulli pwhen pis restricted to a symmetric subinterval of the natural parameter space is considered. For the sample sizes n = 1,2,3, and 4 least favorable priors with finite support are provided and the corresponding Bayes estimators are shown to be minimax. For n = 5 and 6 the usual constant risk minimax estimator is shown to be the Bayes minimax estimator corresponding to a least favorable prior with finite support, provided the restriction on the parameter space is not too tight.  相似文献

Huber's estimator has had a long lasting impact, particularly on robust statistics. It is well known that under certain conditions, Huber's estimator is asymptotically minimax. A moderate generalization in rederiving Huber's estimator shows that Huber's estimator is not the only choice. We develop an alternative asymptotic minimax estimator and name it regression with stochastically bounded noise (RSBN). Simulations demonstrate that RSBN is slightly better in performance, although it is unclear how to justify such an improvement theoretically. We propose two numerical solutions: an iterative numerical solution, which is extremely easy to implement and is based on the proximal point method; and a solution by applying state-of-the-art nonlinear optimization software packages, e.g., SNOPT. Contribution: the generalization of the variational approach is interesting and should be useful in deriving other asymptotic minimax estimators in other problems.  相似文献

For a class of discrete distributions, including Poisson(θ), Generalized Poisson(θ), Borel(m, θ), etc., we consider minimax estimation of the parameter θ under the assumption it lies in a bounded interval of the form [0, m] and a LINEX loss function. Explicit conditions for the minimax estimator to be Bayes with respect to a boundary supported prior are given. Also for Bernoulli(θ)-distribution, which is not in the mentioned class of discrete distributions, we give conditions for which the Bayes estimator of θ ∈ [0, m], m < 1 with respect to a boundary supported prior is minimax under LINEX loss function. Numerical values are given for the largest values of m for which the corresponding Bayes estimators of θ are minimax.  相似文献

In this article, assuming that the error terms follow a multivariate t distribution,we derive the exact formulae forthe moments of the heterogeneous preliminary test (HPT) estimator proposed by Xu (2012b Xu, H. (2012b). MSE performance and minimax regret significance points for a HPT estimator when each individual regression coefficient is estimated. Commun. Stat. Theory Methods 42:21522164.[Taylor &; Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). We also execute the numerical evaluation to investigate the mean squared error (MSE) performance of the HPT estimator and compare it with those of the feasible ridge regression (FRR) estimator and the usual ordinary least squared (OLS) estimator. Further, we derive the optimal critical values of the preliminary F test for the HPT estimator, using the minimax regret function proposed by Sawa and Hiromatsu (1973 Sawa, T., Hiromatsu, T. (1973). Minimax regret significance points for a preliminary test in regression analysis. Econometrica 41:10931101.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). Our results show that (1) the optimal significance level (α*) increases as the degrees of freedom of multivariate t distribution (ν0) increases; (2) when ν0 ? 10, the value of α* is close to that in the normal error case.  相似文献

Suppose a subset of populations is selected from k exponential populations with unknown location parameters θ1, θ2, …, θk and common known scale parameter σ. We consider the estimation of the location parameter of the selected population and the average worth of the selected subset under an asymmetric LINEX loss function. We show that the natural estimator of these parameters is biased and find the uniformly minimum risk-unbiased (UMRU) estimator of these parameters. In the case of k = 2, we find the minimax estimator of the location parameter of the smallest selected population. Furthermore, we compare numerically the risk of UMRU, minimax, and the natural estimators.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, under Type-I progressive hybrid censoring sample, we obtain maximum likelihood estimator of unknown parameter when the parent distribution belongs to proportional hazard rate family. We derive the conditional probability density function of the maximum likelihood estimator using moment-generating function technique. The exact confidence interval is obtained and compared by conducting a Monte Carlo simulation study for burr Type XII distribution. Finally, we obtain the Bayes and posterior regret gamma minimax estimates of the parameter under a precautionary loss function with precautionary index k = 2 and compare their behavior via a Monte Carlo simulation study.  相似文献

Let X1, X2, …, Xn be identically, independently distributed N(i,1) random variables, where i = 0, ±1, ±2, … Hammersley (1950) showed that d = [X?n], the nearest integer to the sample mean, is the maximum likelihood estimator of i. Khan (1973) showed that d is minimax and admissible with respect to zero-one loss. This note now proves a conjecture of Stein to the effect that in the class of integer-valued estimators d is minimax and admissible under squared-error loss.  相似文献

In this article, we consider a heterogeneous preliminary test (HPT) estimator whose components are the OLS and feasible ridge regression (FRR) estimators, and derive the exact formulae for the moments of the HPT estimator using mathematical method. Since we cannot examine the MSE of the HPT estimator analytically, we execute the numerical evaluation to investigate the MSE performance of the HPT estimator, and compare the MSE performance of the HPT estimator with those of the FRR estimator and the usual OLS estimator. Furthermore, using the minimax regret criterion proposed by Sawa and Hiromatsu (1973 Sawa , T. , Hiromatsu , T. ( 1973 ). Minimax regret significance points for a preliminary test in regression analysis . Econometrica 41 : 10931101 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), we derive the optimal critical points of the preliminary F test. Our results show that the optimal significance points are greater than 19% and the optimal signicance points decrease as the denominator degrees of freedom of the preliminary F test statistic increases.  相似文献

Let л1 and л2 denote two independent gamma populations G(α1, p) and G(α2, p) respectively. Assume α(i=1,2)are unknown and the common shape parameter p is a known positive integer. Let Yi denote the sample mean based on a random sample of size n from the i-th population. For selecting the population with the larger mean, we consider, the natural rule according to which the population corresponding to the larger Yi is selected. We consider? in this paper, the estimation of M, the mean of the selected population. It is shown that the natural estimator is positively biased. We obtain the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator(UMVE) of M. We also consider certain subclasses of estikmators of the form c1x(1) +c1x(2) and derive admissible estimators in these classes. The minimazity of certain estimators of interest is investigated. Itis shown that p(p+1)-1x(1) is minimax and dominates the UMVUE. Also UMVUE is not minimax.  相似文献

In this paper, a generalized difference-based estimator is introduced for the vector parameter β in partially linear model when the errors are correlated. A generalized-difference-based almost unbiased two-parameter estimator is defined for the vector parameter β. Under the linear stochastic constraint r = Rβ + e, we introduce a new generalized-difference-based weighted mixed almost unbiased two-parameter estimator. The performance of this new estimator over the generalized-difference-based estimator and generalized- difference-based almost unbiased two-parameter estimator in terms of the MSEM criterion is investigated. The efficiency properties of the new estimator is illustrated by a simulation study. Finally, the performance of the new estimator is evaluated for a real dataset.  相似文献

The paper introduces a new difference-based Liu estimator β?Ldiff=([Xtilde]′[Xtilde]+I)?1([Xtilde]′[ytilde]+η β?diff) of the regression parameters β in the semiparametric regression model, y=Xβ+f+?. Difference-based estimator, β?diff=([Xtilde]′[Xtilde])?1[Xtilde]′[ytilde] and difference-based Liu estimator are analysed and compared with respect to mean-squared error (mse) criterion. Finally, the performance of the new estimator is evaluated for a real data set. Monte Carlo simulation is given to show the improvement in the scalar mse of the estimator.  相似文献

In this article, we introduce a new two-parameter estimator by grafting the contraction estimator into the modified ridge estimator proposed by Swindel (1976 Swindel , B. F. ( 1976 ). Good ridge estimators based on prior information . Commun. Statist. Theor. Meth. A5 : 10651075 .[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). This new two-parameter estimator is a general estimator which includes the ordinary least squares, the ridge, the Liu, and the contraction estimators as special cases. Furthermore, by setting restrictions Rβ = r on the parameter values we introduce a new restricted two-parameter estimator which includes the well-known restricted least squares, the restricted ridge proposed by Groß (2003 Groß , J. ( 2003 ). Restricted ridge estimation . Statist. Probab. Lett. 65 : 5764 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]), the restricted contraction estimators, and a new restricted Liu estimator which we call the modified restricted Liu estimator different from the restricted Liu estimator proposed by Kaç?ranlar et al. (1999 Kaç?ranlar , S. , Sakall?o?lu , S. , Akdeniz , F. , Styan , G. P. H. , Werner , H. J. ( 1999 ). A new biased estimator in linear regression and a detailed analysis of the widely-analysed dataset on Portland cement . Sankhya Ser. B., Ind. J. Statist. 61 : 443459 . [Google Scholar]). We also obtain necessary and sufficient condition for the superiority of the new two-parameter estimator over the ordinary least squares estimator and the comparison of the new restricted two-parameter estimator to the new two-parameter estimator is done by the criterion of matrix mean square error. The estimators of the biasing parameters are given and a simulation study is done for the comparison as well as the determination of the biasing parameters.  相似文献

The seminal work of Stein (1956 Stein, C. (1956). Inadmissibility of the usual estimator for the mean of a multivariate normal distribution. Proc. Third Berkeley Symp. Mathemat. Statist. Probab., University of California Press, 1:197206. [Google Scholar]) showed that the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the mean vector of a p-dimensional multivariate normal distribution is inadmissible under the squared error loss function when p ? 3 and proposed the Stein estimator that dominates the MLE. Later, James and Stein (1961 James, W., Stein, C. (1961). Estimation with quadratic loss. Proc. Fourth Berkeley Symp. Mathemat. Statist. Probab., University of California Press, 1:361379. [Google Scholar]) proposed the James-Stein estimator for the same problem and received much more attention than the original Stein estimator. We re-examined the Stein estimator and conducted an analytic comparison with the James-Stein estimator. We found that the Stein estimator outperforms the James-Stein estimator under certain scenarios and derived the sufficient conditions.  相似文献

In this article, we introduce a new class of estimators called the sK type principal components estimators to combat multicollinearity, which include the principal components regression (PCR) estimator, the rk estimator and the sK estimator as special cases. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the superiority of the new estimator over the PCR estimator, the rk estimator and the sK estimator are derived in the sense of the mean squared error matrix criterion. A Monte Carlo simulation study and a numerical example are given to illustrate the performance of the proposed estimator.  相似文献

Our aim is to estimate the unknown slope function in the functional linear model when the response Y is real and the random function X is a second-order stationary and periodic process. We obtain our estimator by minimizing a standard (and very simple) mean-square contrast on linear finite dimensional spaces spanned by trigonometric bases. Our approach provides a penalization procedure which allows to automatically select the adequate dimension, in a non-asymptotic point of view. In fact, we can show that our penalized estimator reaches the optimal (minimax) rate of convergence in the sense of the prediction error. We complete the theoretical results by a simulation study and a real example that illustrates how the procedure works in practice.  相似文献

‘?…?if we are prepared to assume that the unknown density has k derivatives, then?…?the optimal mean integrated squared error is of order n?2 k/(2 k+1)?…?’ The citation is from Silverman [(1986), Density Estimation for Statistics and Data Analysis, London: Chapman &; Hall] and its assertion is based on a classical minimax lower bound which is the pillar of the modern nonparametric statistics. This paper proposes a new minimax methodology that implies a faster decreasing minimax lower bound that is attainable by a data-driven estimator, and the same estimator is also minimax under the classical approach. The recommendation is to test performance of estimators via the new and classical minimax approaches.  相似文献

We consider the orthogonally invariant estimation problem of the inverse of the scale matrix of Wishart distribution using Stein's loss (entropy loss). In this problem Krishnamoorthy and Gupta [2] Krishnamoorthy, K. and Gupta, A. K. (1989). Improved minimax estimation of a normal precision matrix. Canad. J. Statist., 17: 91102. The authors consider the problem of estimating the density g of independent and identically distributed variables XI, from a sample Z1,… Zn such that ZI = XI + σ? for i = 1,…, n, and E is noise independent of X, with σ? having a known distribution. They present a model selection procedure allowing one to construct an adaptive estimator of g and to find nonasymptotic risk bounds. The estimator achieves the minimax rate of convergence, in most cases where lower bounds are available. A simulation study gives an illustration of the good practical performance of the method.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a stochastic restricted kd class estimator for the vector of parameters in a linear model when additional linear restrictions on the parameter vector are assumed to hold. The stochastic restricted kd class estimator is a generalization of the ordinary mixed estimator and the kd class estimator. We show that our new biased estimator is superior in the mean squared error matrix sense to the kd class estimator [S. Sakall?o?lu and S. Kaçiranlar, A new biased estimator based on ridge estimation, Statist. Papers 49 (2008), pp. 669–689] and the stochastic restricted Liu estimator [H. Yang and J.W. Xu, An alternative stochastic restricted Liu estimator in linear regression, Statist. Papers 50 (2009), pp. 639–647]. Finally, a numerical example is given to show the theoretical results.  相似文献
