A new class of minimax generalized Bayes estimators of the variance of a normal distribution is given under both quadratic and entropy losses. One contribution of the paper is a new class of minimax generalized Bayes estimators of a particularly simple form. Another contribution is a class of minimax generalized Bayes procedures satisfying a Strawderman [1974. Minimax estimation of powers of the variance of a normal population under squared error loss. Ann. Statist. 2, 190–198]-type condition which do not satisfy a Brewster and Zidek [1974. Improving on equivariant estimators. Ann. Statist. 2, 21–38]-type condition. We indicate that the new class may have a noticeably larger region of substantial improvement over the usual estimator than Brewster and Zidek-type procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, the simultaneous estimation of the precision parameters of k normal distributions is considered under the squared loss function in a decision-theoretic framework. Several classes of minimax estimators are derived by using the chi-square identity, and the generalized Bayes minimax estimators are developed out of the classes. It is also shown that the improvement on the unbiased estimators is characterized by the superharmonic function. This corresponds to Stein's [1981. Estimation of the mean of a multivariate normal distribution. Ann. Statist. 9, 1135–1151] result in simultaneous estimation of normal means.  相似文献

Estimation of the scale parameter in mixture models with unknown location is considered under Stein's loss. Under certain conditions, the inadmissibility of the “usual” estimator is established by exhibiting better estimators. In addition, robust improvements are found for a specified submodel of the original model. The results are applied to mixtures of normal distributions and mixtures of exponential distributions. Improved estimators of the variance of a normal distribution are shown to be robust under any scale mixture of normals having variance greater than the variance of that normal distribution. In particular, Stein's (Ann. Inst. Statist. Math. 16 (1964) 155) and Brewster's and Zidek's (Ann. Statist. 2 (1974) 21) estimators obtained under the normal model are robust under the t model, for arbitrary degrees of freedom, and under the double-exponential model. Improved estimators for the variance of a t distribution with unknown and arbitrary degrees of freedom are also given. In addition, improved estimators for the scale parameter of the multivariate Lomax distribution (which arises as a certain mixture of exponential distributions) are derived and the robustness of Zidek's (Ann. Statist. 1 (1973) 264) and Brewster's (Ann. Statist. 2 (1974) 553) estimators of the scale parameter of an exponential distribution is established under a class of modified Lomax distributions.  相似文献

Bias reduction estimation for tail index has been studied in the literature. One method is to reduce bias with an external estimator of the second order regular variation parameter; see Gomes and Martins [2002. Asymptotically unbiased estimators of the tail index based on external estimation of the second order parameter. Extremes 5(1), 5–31]. It is known that negative extreme value index implies that the underlying distribution has a finite right endpoint. As far as we know, there exists no bias reduction estimator for the endpoint of a distribution. In this paper, we study the bias reduction method with an external estimator of the second order parameter for both the negative extreme value index and endpoint simultaneously. Surprisingly, we find that this bias reduction method for negative extreme value index requires a larger order of sample fraction than that for positive extreme value index. This finding implies that this bias reduction method for endpoint is less attractive than that for positive extreme value index. Nevertheless, our simulation study prefers the proposed bias reduction estimators to the biased estimators in Hall [1982. On estimating the endpoint of a distribution. Ann. Statist. 10, 556–568].  相似文献

We introduce the Hausdorff αα-entropy to study the strong Hellinger consistency of posterior distributions. We obtain general Bayesian consistency theorems which extend the well-known results of Barron et al. [1999. The consistency of posterior distributions in nonparametric problems. Ann. Statist. 27, 536–561] and Ghosal et al. [1999. Posterior consistency of Dirichlet mixtures in density estimation. Ann. Statist. 27, 143–158] and Walker [2004. New approaches to Bayesian consistency. Ann. Statist. 32, 2028–2043]. As an application we strengthen previous results on Bayesian consistency of the (normal) mixture models.  相似文献

The paper reconsider certain estimators proposed by COHENand SACKROWITZ[Ann.Statist.(1974)2,1274-1282,Ann.Statist.4,1294]for the common mean of two normal distributions on the basis of independent samples of equal size from the two populations. It derives the ncecessary and sufficient condition for improvement over the first sample mean, under squared error loss, for any member of a class containing these. It shows that the estimator proposded by them for simultaneous improvement over botyh sample means has the desired property if and only if the common size of the samples is at least nine. The requirement is milder than that for any other estimator at the present state of knolwledge and may be constrasted with their result which implies the desired property of the estimator only if the common size of the samples is at least fifteen. Upper bounds for variances if the estimators derived by them are also improved  相似文献

Reduced-rank regression models proposed by Anderson [1951. Estimating linear restrictions on regression coefficients for multivariate normal distributions. Ann. Math. Statist. 22, 327–351] have been used in various applications in social and natural sciences. In this paper we combine the features of these models with another popular, seemingly unrelated regression model proposed by Zellner [1962. An efficient method of estimating seemingly unrelated regressions and tests for aggregation bias. J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 57, 348–368]. In addition to estimation and inference aspects of the new model, we also discuss an application in the area of marketing.  相似文献

Let X have a gamma distribution with known shape parameter θr;aL and unknown scale parameter θ. Suppose it is known that θ ≥ a for some known a > 0. An admissible minimax estimator for scale-invariant squared-error loss is presented. This estimator is the pointwise limit of a sequence of Bayes estimators. Further, the class of truncated linear estimators C = {θρρ(x) = max(a, ρ), ρ > 0} is studied. It is shown that each θρ is inadmissible and that exactly one of them is minimax. Finally, it is shown that Katz's [Ann. Math. Statist., 32, 136–142 (1961)] estimator of θ is not minimax for our loss function. Some further properties of and comparisons among these estimators are also presented.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with estimating the common hazard rate of two exponential distributions with unknown and ordered location parameters under a general class of bowl-shaped scale invariant loss functions. The inadmissibility of the best affine equivariant estimator is established by deriving an improved estimator. Another estimator is obtained which improves upon the best affine equivariant estimator. A class of improving estimators is derived using the integral expression of risk difference approach of Kubokawa [A unified approach to improving equivariant estimators. Ann Statist. 1994;22(1):290–299]. These results are applied to specific loss functions. It is further shown that these estimators can be derived for four important sampling schemes: (i) complete and i.i.d. sample, (ii) record values, (iii) type-II censoring, and (iv) progressive Type-II censoring. A simulation study is carried out for numerically comparing the risk performance of these proposed estimators.  相似文献

Estimation of two normal means with an order restriction is considered when a covariance matrix is known. It is shown that restricted maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) stochastically dominates both estimators proposed by Hwang and Peddada [Confidence interval estimation subject to order restrictions. Ann Statist. 1994;22(1):67–93] and Peddada et al. [Estimation of order-restricted means from correlated data. Biometrika. 2005;92:703–715]. The estimators are also compared under the Pitman nearness criterion and it is shown that the MLE is closer to ordered means than the other two estimators. Estimation of linear functions of ordered means is also considered and a necessary and sufficient condition on the coefficients is given for the MLE to dominate the other estimators in terms of mean squared error.  相似文献

Horvitz and Thompson's (HT) [1952. A generalization of sampling without replacement from a finite universe. J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 47, 663–685] well-known unbiased estimator for a finite population total admits an unbiased estimator for its variance as given by [Yates and Grundy, 1953. Selection without replacement from within strata with probability proportional to size. J. Roy. Statist. Soc. B 15, 253–261], provided the parent sampling design involves a constant number of distinct units in every sample to be chosen. If the design, in addition, ensures uniform non-negativity of this variance estimator, Rao and Wu [1988. Resampling inference with complex survey data. J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 83, 231–241] have given their re-scaling bootstrap technique to construct confidence interval and to estimate mean square error for non-linear functions of finite population totals of several real variables. Horvitz and Thompson's estimators (HTE) are used to estimate the finite population totals. Since they need to equate the bootstrap variance of the bootstrap estimator to the Yates and Grundy's estimator (YGE) for the variance of the HTE in case of a single variable, i.e., in the linear case the YG variance estimator is required to be positive for the sample usually drawn.  相似文献

In the present article, we have studied the estimation of entropy, that is, a function of scale parameter lnσ of an exponential distribution based on doubly censored sample when the location parameter is restricted to positive real line. The estimation problem is studied under a general class of bowl-shaped non monotone location invariant loss functions. It is established that the best affine equivariant estimator (BAEE) is inadmissible by deriving an improved estimator. This estimator is non-smooth. Further, we have obtained a smooth improved estimator. A class of estimators is considered and sufficient conditions are derived under which these estimators improve upon the BAEE. In particular, using these results we have obtained the improved estimators for the squared error and the linex loss functions. Finally, we have compared the risk performance of the proposed estimators numerically. One data analysis has been performed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

In this paper, a new estimator for estimating the proportion of a potentially sensitive attribute in survey sampling has been introduced. The proposed estimator makes use of higher order moments of the scrambling variable at the estimation stage. The proposed estimator has been found to be more efficient than the estimator due to Kuk [1990. Asking sensitive questions indirectly. Biomerika 77(2), 436–438] and Franklin [1989. A comparison of estimators for randomized response sampling with continuous distributions from a dichotomous population. Comm. Statist. Theory Methods 18, 489–505] type estimators in randomized response sampling. Recently, Guerriero and Sandri [2007. A note on the comparison of some randomized response procedures. J. Statist. Plann. Inference 137, 2184–2190] have shown that the family of randomized response models proposed by Kuk [1990. Asking sensitive questions indirectly. Biomerika 77(2), 436–438] is better than the Simmons’ family in terms of efficiency and protection.  相似文献

The problem of estimation of an unknown common scale parameter of several Pareto distributions with unknown and possibly unequal shape parameters in censored samples is considered. A new class of estimators which includes both the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator (UMVUE) is proposed and examined under a squared error loss.  相似文献

Abstract

Estimation of scale parameter under the squared log error loss function is considered with restriction to the principle of invariance and risk unbiasedness. An explicit form of minimum risk scale-equivariant estimator under this loss is obtained. The admissibility and inadmissibility of a class of linear estimators of the form (cT + d) are considered, where T follows a gamma distribution with an unknown scale parameter η and a known shape parameter ν. This includes the admissibility of the minimum risk equivariant estimator on η (MRE).  相似文献

Although the asymptotic distributions of the likelihood ratio for testing hypotheses of null variance components in linear mixed models derived by Stram and Lee [1994. Variance components testing in longitudinal mixed effects model. Biometrics 50, 1171–1177] are valid, their proof is based on the work of Self and Liang [1987. Asymptotic properties of maximum likelihood estimators and likelihood tests under nonstandard conditions. J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 82, 605–610] which requires identically distributed random variables, an assumption not always valid in longitudinal data problems. We use the less restrictive results of Vu and Zhou [1997. Generalization of likelihood ratio tests under nonstandard conditions. Ann. Statist. 25, 897–916] to prove that the proposed mixture of chi-squared distributions is the actual asymptotic distribution of such likelihood ratios used as test statistics for null variance components in models with one or two random effects. We also consider a limited simulation study to evaluate the appropriateness of the asymptotic distribution of such likelihood ratios in moderately sized samples.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, we assume that the lifetimes have a two-parameter Pareto distribution and discuss some results of progressive Type-II censored sample. We obtain maximum likelihood estimators and Bayes estimators of the unknown parameters under squared error loss and a precautionary loss functions in progressively Type-II censored sample. Robust Bayes estimation of unknown parameters over three different classes of priors under progressively Type-II censored sample, squared error loss, and precautionary loss functions are obtained. We discuss estimation of unknown parameters on competing risks progressive Type-II censoring. Finally, we consider the problem of estimating the common scale parameter of two Pareto distributions when samples are progressively Type-II censored.  相似文献

This paper deals with the problem of interval estimation of the scale parameter in the two-parameter exponential distribution subject to Type II double censoring. Base on a Type II doubly censored sample, we construct a class of interval estimators of the scale parameter which are better than the shortest length affine equivariant interval both in coverage probability and in length. The procedure can be repeated to make further improvement. The extension of the method leads to a smoothly improved confidence interval which improves the interval length with probability one. All improved intervals belong to the class of scale equivariant intervals.  相似文献
