While Bayesian analogues of lasso regression have become popular, comparatively little has been said about formal treatments of model uncertainty in such settings. This paper describes methods that can be used to evaluate the posterior distribution over the space of all possible regression models for Bayesian lasso regression. Access to the model space posterior distribution is necessary if model-averaged inference—e.g., model-averaged prediction and calculation of posterior variable inclusion probabilities—is desired. The key element of all such inference is the ability to evaluate the marginal likelihood of the data under a given regression model, which has so far proved difficult for the Bayesian lasso. This paper describes how the marginal likelihood can be accurately computed when the number of predictors in the model is not too large, allowing for model space enumeration when the total number of possible predictors is modest. In cases where the total number of possible predictors is large, a simple Markov chain Monte Carlo approach for sampling the model space posterior is provided. This Gibbs sampling approach is similar in spirit to the stochastic search variable selection methods that have become one of the main tools for addressing Bayesian regression model uncertainty, and the adaption of these methods to the Bayesian lasso is shown to be straightforward.  相似文献

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Collaborative Study of Long-Term Maintenance Drug Therapy in Recurrent Affective Illness was a multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial designed to determine the efficacy of a pharmacotherapy for the prevention of the recurrence of unipolar affective disorders. The outcome of interest in this study was the time until the recurrence of a depressive episode. The data show much heterogeneity between centers for the placebo group. The aim of this paper is to use Bayesian hierarchical survival models to investigate the heterogeneity of placebo effects among centers in the NIMH study. This heterogeneity is explored in terms of the marginal posterior distributions of parameters of interest and predictive distributions of future observations. The Gibbs sampling algorithm is used to approximate posterior and predictive distributions. Sensitivity of results to the assumption of a constant hazard survival distribution at the first stage of the hierarchy is examined by comparing results derived from a two component exponential mixture and a two component exponential changepoint model to the results derived from an exponential model. The second component of the mixture and changepoint models is assumed to be a surviving fraction. For each of these first stage parametric models sensitivity of results to second stage prior distributions is also examined. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A general Bayesian random effects model for analyzing longitudinal mixed correlated continuous and negative binomial responses with and without missing data is presented. This Bayesian model, given some random effects, uses a normal distribution for the continuous response and a negative binomial distribution for the count response. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithm is described for estimating the posterior distribution of the parameters. This Bayesian model is illustrated by a simulation study. For sensitivity analysis to investigate the change of parameter estimates with respect to the perturbation from missing at random to not missing at random assumption, the use of posterior curvature is proposed. The model is applied to a medical data, obtained from an observational study on women, where the correlated responses are the negative binomial response of joint damage and continuous response of body mass index. The simultaneous effects of some covariates on both responses are also investigated.  相似文献

In spatial generalized linear mixed models (SGLMMs), statistical inference encounters problems, since random effects in the model imply high-dimensional integrals to calculate the marginal likelihood function. In this article, we temporarily treat parameters as random variables and express the marginal likelihood function as a posterior expectation. Hence, the marginal likelihood function is approximated using the obtained samples from the posterior density of the latent variables and parameters given the data. However, in this setting, misspecification of prior distribution of correlation function parameter and problems associated with convergence of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods could have an unpleasant influence on the likelihood approximation. To avoid these challenges, we utilize an empirical Bayes approach to estimate prior hyperparameters. We also use a computationally efficient hybrid algorithm by combining inverse Bayes formula (IBF) and Gibbs sampler procedures. A simulation study is conducted to assess the performance of our method. Finally, we illustrate the method applying a dataset of standard penetration test of soil in an area in south of Iran.  相似文献

Survivaldata may include two different sources of variation, namely variationover time and variation over units. If both of these variationsare present, neglecting one of them can cause serious bias inthe estimations. Here we present an approach for discrete durationdata that includes both time–varying and unit–specificeffects to model these two variations simultaneously. The approachis a combination of a dynamic survival model with dynamic time–varyingbaseline and covariate effects and a frailty model measuringunobserved heterogeneity with random effects varying independentlyover units. Estimation is based on posterior modes, i.e., wemaximize the joint posterior distribution of the unknown parametersto avoid numerical integration and simulation techniques, thatare necessary in a full Bayesian analysis. Estimation of unknownhyperparameters is achieved by an EM–type algorithm. Finally, the proposed method is applied to data of the Veteran's AdministrationLung Cancer Trial.  相似文献

Abstract.  The goodness-of-fit of the distribution of random effects in a generalized linear mixed model is assessed using a conditional simulation of the random effects conditional on the observations. Provided that the specified joint model for random effects and observations is correct, the marginal distribution of the simulated random effects coincides with the assumed random effects distribution. In practice, the specified model depends on some unknown parameter which is replaced by an estimate. We obtain a correction for this by deriving the asymptotic distribution of the empirical distribution function obtained from the conditional sample of the random effects. The approach is illustrated by simulation studies and data examples.  相似文献

Using a direct resampling process, a Bayesian approach is developed for the analysis of the shiftpoint problem. In many problems it is straight forward to isolate the marginal posterior distribution of the shift-point parameter and the conditional distribution of some of the parameters given the shift point and the other remaining parameters. When this is possible, a direct sampling approach is easily implemented whereby standard random number generators can be used to generate samples from the joint posterior distribution of aii the parameters in the model. This technique is illustrated with examples involving one shift for Poisson processes and regression models.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A common Bayesian hierarchical model is where high-dimensional observed data depend on high-dimensional latent variables that, in turn, depend on relatively few hyperparameters. When the full conditional distribution over latent variables has a known form, general MCMC sampling need only be performed on the low-dimensional marginal posterior distribution over hyperparameters. This improves on popular Gibbs sampling that computes over the full space. Sampling the marginal posterior over hyperparameters exhibits good scaling of compute cost with data size, particularly when that distribution depends on a low-dimensional sufficient statistic.  相似文献

Abstract. The Yule–Simpson paradox notes that an association between random variables can be reversed when averaged over a background variable. Cox and Wermuth introduced the concept of distribution dependence between two random variables X and Y, and gave two dependence conditions, each of which guarantees that reversal of qualitatively similar conditional dependences cannot occur after marginalizing over the background variable. Ma, Xie and Geng studied the uniform collapsibility of distribution dependence over a background variable W, under stronger homogeneity condition. Collapsibility ensures that associations are the same for conditional and marginal models. In this article, we use the notion of average collapsibility, which requires only the conditional effects average over the background variable to the corresponding marginal effect and investigate its conditions for distribution dependence and for quantile regression coefficients.  相似文献

A nonasymptotic Bayesian approach is developed for analysis of data from threshold autoregressive processes with two regimes. Using the conditional likelihood function, the marginal posterior distribution for each of the parameters is derived along with posterior means and variances. A test for linear functions of the autoregressive coefficients is presented. The approach presented uses a posterior p-value averaged over the values of the threshold. The one-step ahead predictive distribution is derived along with the predictive mean and variance. In addition, equivalent results are derived conditional upon a value of the threshold. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the approach.  相似文献

In this article, we apply the Bayesian approach to the linear mixed effect models with autoregressive(p) random errors under mixture priors obtained with the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. The mixture structure of a point mass and continuous distribution can help to select the variables in fixed and random effects models from the posterior sample generated using the MCMC method. Bayesian prediction of future observations is also one of the major concerns. To get the best model, we consider the commonly used highest posterior probability model and the median posterior probability model. As a result, both criteria tend to be needed to choose the best model from the entire simulation study. In terms of predictive accuracy, a real example confirms that the proposed method provides accurate results.  相似文献

Bayesian Inference Under Partial Prior Information   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Partial prior information on the marginal distribution of an observable random variable is considered. When this information is incorporated into the statistical analysis of an assumed parametric model, the posterior inference is typically non‐robust so that no inferential conclusion is obtained. To overcome this difficulty a method based on the standard default prior associated to the model and an intrinsic procedure is proposed. Posterior robustness of the resulting inferences is analysed and some illustrative examples are provided.  相似文献

Estimation in Semiparametric Marginal Shared Gamma Frailty Models   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The semiparametric marginal shared frailty models in survival analysis have the non–parametric hazard functions multiplied by a random frailty in each cluster, and the survival times conditional on frailties are assumed to be independent. In addition, the marginal hazard functions have the same form as in the usual Cox proportional hazard models. In this paper, an approach based on maximum likelihood and expectation–maximization is applied to semiparametric marginal shared gamma frailty models, where the frailties are assumed to be gamma distributed with mean 1 and variance θ. The estimates of the fixed–effect parameters and their standard errors obtained using this approach are compared in terms of both bias and efficiency with those obtained using the extended marginal approach. Similarly, the standard errors of our frailty variance estimates are found to compare favourably with those obtained using other methods. The asymptotic distribution of the frailty variance estimates is shown to be a 50–50 mixture of a point mass at zero and a truncated normal random variable on the positive axis for θ0 = 0. Simulations demonstrate that, for θ0 < 0, it is approximately an x −(100 − x )%, 0 ≤ x ≤ 50, mixture between a point mass at zero and a truncated normal random variable on the positive axis for small samples and small values of θ0; otherwise, it is approximately normal.  相似文献

A characterization of Pareto type III distribution is obtained. As a generalization of the Pareto distribution, a new class of distributions called the generalized Pareto distributions is introduced and a characterization of this class is obtained. We introduce a new class of autoregressive models with semi-Pareto marginals and study its properties. As a generalization of semi-Pareto distribution, we introduce semi-Burr distribution and develop a random coefficient autoregressive model with semi-Burr marginal distributions.  相似文献

Summary.  We introduce a flexible marginal modelling approach for statistical inference for clustered and longitudinal data under minimal assumptions. This estimated estimating equations approach is semiparametric and the proposed models are fitted by quasi-likelihood regression, where the unknown marginal means are a function of the fixed effects linear predictor with unknown smooth link, and variance–covariance is an unknown smooth function of the marginal means. We propose to estimate the nonparametric link and variance–covariance functions via smoothing methods, whereas the regression parameters are obtained via the estimated estimating equations. These are score equations that contain nonparametric function estimates. The proposed estimated estimating equations approach is motivated by its flexibility and easy implementation. Moreover, if data follow a generalized linear mixed model, with either a specified or an unspecified distribution of random effects and link function, the model proposed emerges as the corresponding marginal (population-average) version and can be used to obtain inference for the fixed effects in the underlying generalized linear mixed model, without the need to specify any other components of this generalized linear mixed model. Among marginal models, the estimated estimating equations approach provides a flexible alternative to modelling with generalized estimating equations. Applications of estimated estimating equations include diagnostics and link selection. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed estimators for the model parameters is derived, enabling statistical inference. Practical illustrations include Poisson modelling of repeated epileptic seizure counts and simulations for clustered binomial responses.  相似文献

A marginal regression approach for correlated censored survival data has become a widely used statistical method. Examples of this approach in survival analysis include from the early work by Wei et al. (J Am Stat Assoc 84:1065–1073, 1989) to more recent work by Spiekerman and Lin (J Am Stat Assoc 93:1164–1175, 1998). This approach is particularly useful if a covariate’s population average effect is of primary interest and the correlation structure is not of interest or cannot be appropriately specified due to lack of sufficient information. In this paper, we consider a semiparametric marginal proportional hazard mixture cure model for clustered survival data with a surviving or “cure” fraction. Unlike the clustered data in previous work, the latent binary cure statuses of patients in one cluster tend to be correlated in addition to the possible correlated failure times among the patients in the cluster who are not cured. The complexity of specifying appropriate correlation structures for the data becomes even worse if the potential correlation between cure statuses and the failure times in the cluster has to be considered, and thus a marginal regression approach is particularly attractive. We formulate a semiparametric marginal proportional hazards mixture cure model. Estimates are obtained using an EM algorithm and expressions for the variance–covariance are derived using sandwich estimators. Simulation studies are conducted to assess finite sample properties of the proposed model. The marginal model is applied to a multi-institutional study of local recurrences of tonsil cancer patients who received radiation therapy. It reveals new findings that are not available from previous analyses of this study that ignored the potential correlation between patients within the same institution.  相似文献

A marginal–pairwise-likelihood estimation approach is examined in the mixed Rasch model with the binary response and logit link. This method belonging to the broad class of composite likelihood provides estimators with desirable asymptotic properties such as consistency and asymptotic normality. We study the performance of the proposed methodology when the random effect distribution is misspecified. A simulation study was conducted to compare this approach with the maximum marginal likelihood. The different results are also illustrated with an analysis of the real data set from a quality-of-life study.  相似文献

Longitudinal studies of a binary outcome are common in the health, social, and behavioral sciences. In general, a feature of random effects logistic regression models for longitudinal binary data is that the marginal functional form, when integrated over the distribution of the random effects, is no longer of logistic form. Recently, Wang and Louis (2003) proposed a random intercept model in the clustered binary data setting where the marginal model has a logistic form. An acknowledged limitation of their model is that it allows only a single random effect that varies from cluster to cluster. In this paper, we propose a modification of their model to handle longitudinal data, allowing separate, but correlated, random intercepts at each measurement occasion. The proposed model allows for a flexible correlation structure among the random intercepts, where the correlations can be interpreted in terms of Kendall's τ. For example, the marginal correlations among the repeated binary outcomes can decline with increasing time separation, while the model retains the property of having matching conditional and marginal logit link functions. Finally, the proposed method is used to analyze data from a longitudinal study designed to monitor cardiac abnormalities in children born to HIV-infected women.  相似文献

The Laplace distribution is considered as a better choice for modeling whenever data exhibit high kurtosis and heavier tails than Gaussian tails. Even though this is the case, not much work has been done on bivariate Laplace distribution. In this work, we introduce and study a new class of bivariate distributions called bivariate semi α-Laplace distribution, containing bivariate Laplace distributions. Three characterizations of bivariate semi α-Laplace distribution are obtained. Relation with bivariate semi stable distribution is established. An autoregressive model with bivariate semi α-Laplace marginal distributions is developed.  相似文献

In this article we propose a novel non-parametric sampling approach to estimate posterior distributions from parameters of interest. Starting from an initial sample over the parameter space, this method makes use of this initial information to form a geometrical structure known as Voronoi tessellation over the whole parameter space. This rough approximation to the posterior distribution provides a way to generate new points from the posterior distribution without any additional costly model evaluations. By using a traditional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) over the non-parametric tessellation, the initial approximate distribution is refined sequentially. We applied this method to a couple of climate models to show that this hybrid scheme successfully approximates the posterior distribution of the model parameters.  相似文献
