ABSTRACT

When a distribution function is in the max domain of attraction of an extreme value distribution, its tail can be well approximated by a generalized Pareto distribution. Based on this fact we use a moment estimation idea to propose an adapted maximum likelihood estimator for the extreme value index, which can be understood as a combination of the maximum likelihood estimation and moment estimation. Under certain regularity conditions, we derive the asymptotic normality of the new estimator and investigate its finite sample behavior by comparing with several classical or competitive estimators. A simulation study shows that the new estimator is competitive with other estimators in view of average bias, average MSE, and coefficient of variance of the new device for the optimal selection of the threshold.  相似文献

This article focuses on the minimum distance estimators under two newly introduced modifications of Cramér–von Mises distance. The generalized power form of Cramér–von Mises distance is defined together with the so-called Kolmogorov–Cramér distance which includes both standard Kolmogorov and Cramér–von Mises distances as limiting special cases. We prove the consistency of Kolmogorov-Cramér estimators in the (expected) L1-norm by direct technique employing domination relations between statistical distances. In our numerical simulation we illustrate the quality of consistency property for sample sizes of the most practical range from n = 10 to n = 500. We study dependence of consistency in L1-norm on ?-contamination neighborhood of the true model and further the robustness of these two newly defined estimators for normal families and contaminated samples. Numerical simulations are used to compare statistical properties of the minimum Kolmogorov–Cramér, generalized Cramér–von Mises, standard Kolmogorov, and Cramér–von Mises distance estimators of the normal family scale parameter. We deal with the corresponding order of consistency and robustness. The resulting graphs are presented and discussed for the cases of the contaminated and uncontaminated pseudo-random samples.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the scale parameter of the generalized exponential (GE) distribution based on a random censoring model. We assume the censoring distribution also follows a GE distribution. Since the estimator does not provide an explicit solution, we propose a simple method of deriving an explicit estimator by approximating the likelihood function. In order to compare the performance of the estimators, Monte Carlo simulation is conducted. The results show that the MLE and the approximate MLE are almost identical in terms of bias and variance.  相似文献

In this paper, we first introduce two new estimators for estimating the entropy of absolutely continuous random variables. We then compare the introduced estimators with the existing entropy estimators, including the first of such estimators proposed by Dimitriev and Tarasenko [On the estimation functions of the probability density and its derivatives, Theory Probab. Appl. 18 (1973), pp. 628–633]. We next propose goodness-of-fit tests for normality based on the introduced entropy estimators and compare their powers with the powers of other entropy-based tests for normality. Our simulation results show that the introduced estimators perform well in estimating entropy and testing normality.  相似文献

The inverse Gaussian (IG) distribution is widely used to model data and then it is important to develop efficient goodness of fit tests for this distribution. In this article, we introduce some new test statistics for examining the IG goodness of fit based on correcting moments of nonparametric probability density functions of entropy estimators. These tests are consistent against all alternatives. Critical points and power of the tests are explored by simulation. We show that the proposed tests are more powerful than competitor tests. Finally, the proposed tests are illustrated by real data examples.  相似文献

In this article, we define and study a new three-parameter model called the Marshall–Olkin extended generalized Lindley distribution. We derive various structural properties of the proposed model including expansions for the density function, ordinary moments, moment generating function, quantile function, mean deviations, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, order statistics and their moments, Rényi entropy and reliability. We estimate the model parameters using the maximum likelihood technique of estimation. We assess the performance of the maximum likelihood estimators in a simulation study. Finally, by means of two real datasets, we illustrate the usefulness of the new model.  相似文献

Abstract

A new symmetric heavy-tailed distribution, namely gamma mixture of generalized error distribution is defined by scaling generalized error distribution with gamma distribution, its probability density function, k-moment, skewness and kurtosis are derived. After tedious calculation, we also give the Fisher information matrix, moment estimators and maximum likelihood estimators for the parameters of gamma mixture of generalized error distribution. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the point estimators and the stability of Fisher information matrix, extensive simulation experiments are carried out in three groups of parameters. Additionally, the new distribution is applied to Apple Inc. stock (AAPL) data and compared with normal distribution, F-S skewed standardized t distribution and generalized error distribution. It is found that the new distribution has better fitting effect on the data under the Akaike information criterion (AIC). To a certain extent, our results enrich the probability distribution theory and develop the scale mixture distribution, which will provide help and reference for financial data analysis.  相似文献

In this paper, we first introduce new entropy estimators for distributions with known and bounded supports. Our estimators are obtained by using constrained maximum likelihood estimation of cumulative distribution function for absolutely continuous distributions with known and bounded supports. We prove the consistency of our estimators. Then, we propose uniformity tests based on the proposed entropy estimators and compare their powers with the powers of other tests of uniformity. Our simulation results show that the proposed entropy estimators perform well in estimating entropy and testing uniformity.  相似文献

This paper compares minimum distance estimation with best linear unbiased estimation to determine which technique provides the most accurate estimates for location and scale parameters as applied to the three parameter Pareto distribution. Two minimum distance estimators are developed for each of the three distance measures used (Kolmogorov, Cramer‐von Mises, and Anderson‐Darling) resulting in six new estimators. For a given sample size 6 or 18 and shape parameter 1(1)4, the location and scale parameters are estimated. A Monte Carlo technique is used to generate the sample sets. The best linear unbiased estimator and the six minimum distance estimators provide parameter estimates based on each sample set. These estimates are compared using mean square error as the evaluation tool. Results show that the best linear unbaised estimator provided more accurate estimates of location and scale than did the minimum estimators tested.  相似文献

The broad class of generalized von Mises (GvM) circular distributions has certain optimal properties with respect to information theoretic quantities. It is shown that, under constraints on the trigonometric moments, and using the Kullback–Leibler information as the measure, the closest circular distribution to any other is of the GvM form. The lower bounds for the Kullback–Leibler information in this situation are also provided. The same problem is also considered using a modified version of the Kullback–Leibler information. Finally, series expansions are given for the entropy and the normalizing constants of the GvM distribution.  相似文献

In this article, the asymptotic distribution of the circular median is derived for symmetric distributions on the circle. Its asymptotic relative efficienty with respect to the mean direction and to an estimator proposed by Watson (1983) is then examined. Special attention is given to the cases where the underlying distribution is von Mises and contaminated von Mises. It is seen that the circular median can perform more efficiently than both estimators in presence of outliers.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a three-parameter generalized von Mises distribution, called the asymmetric generalized von Mises (AGvM) distribution, which is an extension of the von Mises (vM) distribution, and a subclass of the generalized von Mises (GvM) distribution introduced by Gatto and Jammalamadaka (Stat Methodol 4:341–353, 2007). The three parameter model belongs to an exponential family of distributions and can be used to model both asymmetric and bimodal data. Some properties are studied and interpretation of the parameters is discussed in detail. It is shown that the parameters of the AGvM distribution are particularly easy to interpret and contain a skewness measure as one of its three parameters. A real environmental data set example is provided to illustrate the goodness of fit for AGvM distribution.  相似文献

This paper discusses some stochastic models for dependence of observations which include angular ones. First, we provide a theorem which constructs four-dimensional distributions with specified bivariate marginals on certain manifolds such as two tori, cylinders or discs. Some properties of the submodel of the proposed models are investigated. The theorem is also applicable to the construction of a related Markov process, models for incomplete observations, and distributions with specified marginals on the disc. Second, two maximum entropy distributions on the cylinder are discussed. The circular marginal of each model is distributed as the generalized von Mises distribution which represents a symmetric or asymmetric, unimodal or bimodal shape. The proposed cylindrical model is applied to two data sets.  相似文献

The generalized exponential distribution proposed by Gupta and Kundu [Gupta, R.D and Kundu, D., 1999, Generalized exponential distributions. Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics, 41(2), 173–188.] is an important lifetime distribution in survival analysis. In this paper, we consider the maximum likelihood estimation procedure of the parameters of the generalized exponential distribution when the data are left censored. We obtain the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown para-meters and the Fisher information matrix. Four strategies for bias correction of the maximum likelihood estimator of the parameters in the Type I generalized logistic distribution are studied. First, we consider an analytic bias-corrected estimator, which is obtained by deriving an analytic expression for the bias to order n ?1; second, a method based on modifying the likelihood equations; third, we consider the jackknife bias-corrected estimator; and fourth, we consider two bootstrap bias-corrected estimators. In this paper, we present two new estimators for the entropy of absolutely continuous random variables and consider some of their properties. Consistency of the first estimator is shown by Monte Carlo method, and the consistency of the second estimator is proved theoretically. Using these estimators, two new tests for normality are presented and their powers are compared with the other entropy-based tests. Simulation results show that the proposed estimators and test statistics perform very well. Finally, a real example is presented and analysed.  相似文献

In this paper, we derive Bayesian estimators of the parameters of modified power series distributions inflated at any of a support point under linex and general entropy loss function. We assume that the prior information can be summarized by a uniform, Beta, two-sided power, Gamma or generalized Pareto distributions. The obtained results are demonstrated on the generalized Poisson and the generalized negative binomial distribution inflated at a given point.  相似文献

The maximum entropy characterization of the von Mises distribution on the circle is exploited to derive a consistent goodness of fit test for the von Mises distribution. Monte Carlo simulation results are tabulated giving critical values of the test statistic for various sample sizes and values of the concentration parameter. A power analysis is presented for various alternative hypotheses, comparing this entropy statistic to two other competing goodness of fit statistics. The entropy statistic is shown to compare favorably and may be more attractive, especially considering its ease of computation.  相似文献
