The Use of a Workshop on Group Work for Field Instructors to Enhance Students' Experience with Group Work in the Field Practicum

To enhance student's learning about group work in the field practicum, one undergraduate program provided a continuing education workshop to field instructors in which core group work content was identified as were suggestions for how they could provide appropriate learning opportunities for their students. Results suggest that such training may positively affect students' opportunities to practice group work. The findings also are consistent with previous research that has demonstrated that social work students often have only limited opportunities to practice group work in the field.     

Educating Our Future Colleagues: Creating an MSW Palliative Care Practicum

As the number of older adults and those with chronic medical conditions continues to rise, the need to train social work students in palliative and end-of-life competencies becomes critical. To address this growing need, the social work team at a large urban academic medical center in the Midwest developed an MSW concentration practicum in palliative and end-of-life care. During the practicum, students receive immersive training in palliative care social work values and the skills required for these specialized assessments, interventions, and evaluations. Their training culminates in their participation on an interdisciplinary team to provide psychosocial support to patients and families receiving palliative and end-of-life care throughout the medical center. This article describes the curriculum, practice immersion, training manual, teaching modules, and structure of student supervision which is applicable to and adaptable for other palliative care social work field instructors.

A Model for Inservice Training with Professional Staff in Work with Groups

The lack of practitioners who are trained in the group work method has a negative impact on the: development of new group services, quality of group work and the education of students. Inservice training for professional staff can help to reduce these problems. The paper describes a model for inservice training which the author has developed and implemented to train agency practitioners. The model consists of four stages. Marketing strategies to recruit agencies make up the first stage. The second stage is devoted to planning activities. The third stage covers the training, and the fourth deals with follow-up steps after the formal training is completed.

Revitalizing the Vision in Supervision: Supporting the Supervisor in Home-Based Therapy Programs

Home-based programs provide a growing number of mental health and case-management services to high-risk children, adolescents, and their families. The clinical service providers who work directly with these children and families have varying degrees of education and practice experience as well as a range of different supervisory needs. Because of the daily challenges service providers face, they require support from competent, available supervisors. The professionals who supervise them often assume that responsibility with limited, if any, training in providing supervision. New and experienced supervisors alike often find themselves in positions for which they are ill prepared, without suitable training or administrative support. This article describes a supervision seminar developed for supervisors who supervise the clinicians who provide home-based services. The seminar provides training, support, consultation, and other forms of assistance to help supervisors adapt their clinical skills for use in their supervisory roles.     

External supervision for social workers in another socio-political context: a qualitative study in Shenzhen,China

External supervision of local social workers has become a common practice in Shenzhen, China as the development of social work as a profession reaches break-neck pace and when the shortage of experienced social work supervisors also becomes acute. Hence, many supervisors have been recruited externally from Hong Kong to fill the gap. However, for external supervisors working in another socio-political context they will need an awareness and sensitivity of cultural issues, and cultural dynamics in supervision. Based on a qualitative study conducted in Shenzhen of 16 in-depth interviews with supervisors and supervisees in eight supervisory dyads, as well as a focus group meeting with three external supervisors from Hong Kong, this study finds that the institutional hierarchy, ruling culture and traditional Confucian values which place great importance of harmony, reciprocal relationships with others, effective self-control and respect for hierarchy have impacted the day-to-day practice as well as the interactions between social workers and their external supervisors in Shenzhen. The implications of this study is that in achieving successful supervisory practice the further development of intercultural competence is one of the key directions for professionalising social work in the Chinese Mainland.     

财富、支配与国家：亚当·斯密论奴隶制的废除与现代自由的基础

尽管近年来学界对亚当·斯密所谓商业实现人类自由与文明社会的判断多有关注，但未能充分解释其笔下包括商业社会在内的人类社会广泛存在的社会压迫，低估了奴隶制的韧性与西欧现代自由的偶然性。本文指出，斯密认为商业无法实现人性中暴烈激情的普遍转向，而是通过改变财富与政治权力的分配来实现人类自由的革新。在古代政治中，商业强化了既有的蓄奴经济与支配结构，但在欧洲封建时代破碎的政治版图中，商业与奢侈恰好促成了封建领主的破产，进而导致少部分地区封建制的瓦解、绝对主义的诞生与奴隶制的废除。同样重要的是，欧洲内陆广大的封建地产缓和了地主的财政危机，商业在此无力撬动财富与权力的天平，反而再次强化了社会压迫。对斯密来说，只有深入了解商业社会在政治权威变迁中的角色与作用，观察商业对政治权力分配方式的历史影响，才能充分理解法治、正义与自由的可能性。     

Friendship and other weapons: Group activities to help young girls aged 5–11 to cope with bullying by Whitson,S.

In face of the proliferation of many varieties of group modalities, social work has paradoxically been eroding its own group work component in the past decade. The rise of generic training has resulted in a diminishing pool of qualified practitioners, consultants, and educators in group work, as well as the virtual disappearance of group work articles in social work journals. This self-created gap has been filled by borrowing techniques from other professions. With a beginning recognition of these trends, some shifts are occurring that begin to signal a reversal of this process.     

Unemployment and Labour Market Policies: Some Lessons from West Germany

The author points out that West Germany has had low inflation, high industrial efficiency, and good vocational training, but has not escaped rising levels of unemployment. After an analysis of employment trends in Germany since 1945 there is a review of varying government policies in public expenditure and in dealing with unemployment. The author relates demographic trends to employment patterns, and refers to such phenomena as the "dormant labour force", concluding that unemployment will remain high. He reviews the effects of social security benefits and of job creation schemes. He concludes that none of the well-known remedies for unemployment have proved effective in themselves but that short-term job creation schemes are very much a "second-best". He concludes that industrial efficiency — though essential — is not enough in itself and that conquering inflation or providing youth training are shown by the German example to be only a partial help and not a solution to improving employment prospects.

督导是社会工作服务体系中的重要角色,也是社会工作教育者专业化发展的趋势与方向。对于社会工作专任教师而言,成为督导不仅能够适应培养学生的任务要求,同时也适应于内地社会工作模式本土化的宏观需要并促进教师在社会工作专业领域内的自身发展。在此基础上,本文对如何促进社会工作教师成为有效的督导进行了尝试性的分析。     

Group work is … powerful! This stuff changes … lives: training on group processes for facilitators of curriculum-based groups

ABSTRACT

This article describes a four-year group work training project conducted with facilitators of curriculum-based parenting groups who had not been trained in group work or group processes. A total 14 group facilitators and 144 group members from 34 groups were involved in the training and the mixed method evaluation. Participants described how the training modified their group facilitation, helping them understand that the groups themselves as well as the curricula were informative and transformative, and that group members as well as group facilitators had roles. Further, facilitators indicated that the training resulted in fundamental change in their self-perceptions from being simply purveyors of a parenting curriculum to empathic agents of change as well.     

Training and Supervision of Counselors at a Residential Grief Camp

Peer-based grief camps, utilizing a volunteer staff, represent one method of mutual aid support for children. Manitou Experience is an example of a week-long residential camp for grieving boys. The recruitment, training, and supervision of Manitou Experience’s camp counselors and clinical team members are explained as they relate to program development and facilitation of positive change in its campers. Strengths and challenges of group processes are explored and discussed.     

A Study of MSW and BSW Students' Involvement with Group Work in the Field Practicum

ABSTRACT

Over six hundred students from ten schools of social work participated in a study designed to determine the extent to which they were involved in group work in their field practicum and their attitudes towards this intervention. Results indicated that the majority of the students felt they understood group work, even though they had actually had relatively little academic preparation and limited experience with groups in their field placement. In addition, the findings suggest that actual experience with group work in the field placement may decrease students' desire to lead groups in their professional practice, unless this experience is accompanied by appropriate support and guidance.     

Awareness of Publication Guidelines and the Responsible Conduct of Research

We have conducted a longitudinal survey of NIH-funded F32 postdoctoral fellows to determine if mandated instruction in the responsible conduct of research (RCR) has measurable effects on awareness of, attentiveness to, and behavioral judgments about research ethics and authorship and publication. Of 418 F32 fellows participating in the study, 50% were aware of and had referred to guidelines on authorship and publication practices while 50% were either unaware of or had not referred to guidelines. Groups were similar with regard to total number of peer-reviewed publications and total number of first author publications, years of research experience, years since completing their doctoral degree, and receipt of RCR training. The equal distribution of guideline awareness and use, and group similarities with regard to career development and achievement provided us with an opportunity to consider whether awareness of and use of guidelines is associated with broader judgments about author roles and responsibilities. The findings suggest that awareness and utilization of guidelines are, at best, only modestly associated with more ethically appropriate judgments and attitudes about author roles and responsibilities among novice F32’s.

Abortion: With Particular Reference to the Developing Role of Counselling

Summary This paper suggests that counselling is a rapidly expandingfield in which professional and para-professional workers mightcombine to produce an effective service, given appropriate selectionand training procedures. Initially these are seen as being providedby professionally qualified social workers with relevant experience.The author has used her own social work experience in abortioncounselling to exemplify the article and to discuss some ofthe existing problems for workers and clients alike.     

大类培养模式下小组工作对大学生专业成长的作用——以长江大学社工L班团队建设小组为个案

为了深化教学改革,提高人才培养质量,我国大部分高校推行按大类招生分阶段培养的模式。该模式有利于"厚基础、宽口径、强能力、高素质"的人才培养,但是学科门类划分是否合理,培养阶段设置是否科学等都会影响学生的专业学习。笔者以长江大学社工L班团队建设小组为个案,研究了小组工作方法介入大学生专业成长中的作用。结果表明,小组工作方法有利于社会工作专业学生的专业成长。
