SUMMARY Taguchi introduced the concept of split-unit design to sort factors into different groups with respect to difficulties involved in changing the levels of factors. Li et al. have developed all possible group structures for eight factors in an L16 orthogonal array for resolution IV with split-plot design. Chen et al. have searched for a best design, according to the various criteria for two-level fractional factorial design and have presented a catalogue. In this paper, we have developed an algorithm for generating group structure and possible allocations for various 2n- k fractional factorial designs that correspond to the designs given by Chen et al.  相似文献

Summary.  When it is impractical to perform the experimental runs of a fractional factorial design in a completely random order, restrictions on the randomization can be imposed. The resulting design is said to have a split-plot, or nested, error structure. Similarly to fractional factorials, fractional factorial split-plot designs can be ranked by using the aberration criterion. Techniques that generate the required designs systematically presuppose unreplicated settings of the whole-plot factors. We use a cheese-making experiment to demonstrate the practical relevance of designs with replicated settings of these factors. We create such designs by splitting the whole plots according to one or more subplot effects. We develop a systematic method to generate the required designs and we use the method to create a table of designs that is likely to be useful in practice.  相似文献

Mixed-level designs have become widely used in the practical experiments. When the levels of some factors are difficult to be changed or controlled, fractional factorial split-plot (FFSP) designs are often used. It is highly to know when a mixed-level FFSP design with resolution III or IV has clear effects. This paper investigates the conditions of a resolution III or IV FFSP design with both two-level and four-level factors to have various clear factorial effects, including two types of main effects and three types of two-factor interaction components. As split-plot designs are commonly used in robust design it is important to identify factors in these designs that influence the dispersion of the response variable. In this article, the Bergman-Hynén method, developed for identification of dispersion effects in unreplicated experiments, is modified to be used in the context of split-plot experiments. The modification of the Bergman-Hynén method enables identification of factors that influence specific variance components in unreplicated two-level fractional factorial splitplot experiments. An industrial example is used to illustrate the proposed method.  相似文献

The present article establishes equivalence between extended group divisible (EGD) designs and designs for crop sequence experiments. This equivalence has encouraged the agricultural experimenters to use EGD designs for their experimentation. Some real life applications of EGD designs have been given. It has also been shown that several existing association schemes are special cases of EGD association scheme. Some methods of construction of EGD designs are also given. A catalogue of EGD designs obtainable through methods of construction along with efficiency factors of various factorial effects is also presented. In some crop sequence experiments that are conducted to develop suitable integrated nutrient supply system of a crop sequence, the treatments do not comprise of a complete factorial structure. The experimenter is interested in estimating the residual and direct effect of the treatments along with their cumulative effects. For such experimental settings block designs with two sets of treatments applied in succession are the appropriate designs. The correspondence established between row–column designs and block designs for two stage experiments by Parsad et al. [2003. Structurally incomplete row–column designs. Comm. Statist. Theory Methods 32(1), 239–261] has been exploited in obtaining designs for such experimental situations. Some open problems related to designing of crop sequence experiments are also given.  相似文献

It is known that for blocked 2n-k2n-k designs a judicious sequencing of blocks may allow one to obtain early and insightful results regarding influential parameters in the experiment. Such findings may justify the early termination of the experiment thereby producing cost and time savings. This paper introduces an approach for selecting the optimal sequence of blocks for regular two-level blocked fractional factorial split-plot screening experiments. An optimality criterion is developed so as to give priority to the early estimation of low-order factorial effects. This criterion is then applied to the minimum aberration blocked fractional factorial split-plot designs tabled in McLeod and Brewster [2004. Whole-plot (WP) factors and sub-plot (SP) factors play different roles in fractional factorial split-plot (FFSP) designs. In this paper, we consider FFSP designs with resolution III or IV from the viewpoint of clear factorial effects, classify two-factor interactions (2FIs) into three types, and give sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of FFSP designs containing various clear factorial effects, including two types of main effects and three types of 2FIs. A supersaturated design is essentially a fractional factorial design whose number of experimental variables is greater than or equal to its number of experimental runs. Under the effect sparsity assumption, a supersaturated design can be very cost-effective. In this paper, our prime objective is to compare the existing two-level supersaturated designs for the noisy case through the probability of correct searching—a powerful criterion proposed by Shirakura et al. [1996. Searching probabilities for nonzeroeffects in search designs for the noisy case. Ann. Statist. 24, 2560–2568]. The confounding and aliasing scheme for fractional factorial split-plot designs with the units within each wholeplot arranged in rows and columns is described and illustrated. Isomorphism for this design type is described, together with a procedure which considers extensions of the concepts of wordlength patterns and letter patterns that can be used to test isomorphism between designs. Using in part this isomorphism testing procedure, a construction algorithm that may be used to obtain a complete set of such non-isomorphic two-level designs is described. Software based on this construction algorithm was used to obtain a complete set of non-isomorphic designs for up to five wholeplot factors, five subplot factors and up to 64 runs, which is presented as a table of designs. To aid the experimenter in distinguishing between competing designs, the estimation capacity sequence for each design is presented.  相似文献

A weighted A-optimality (WA-optimality) criterion is discussed for selecting a fractional 2m factorial design of resolution V. A WA-optimality criterion having one weight may be considered for designs. It is shown that designs derived from orthogonal arrays are WA-optimal for any weight. From a WA-optimal design, a procedure for finding WA-optimal designs for various weights is given. WA-optimal balanced designs are presented for 4 ⩽ m ⩽ 7 and for the values of n assemblies in certain ranges. It is pointed out that designs for m = 7 and for n = 41, 42 given in Chopra and Srivastava (1973a) or in the corrected paper by Chopra et al. (1986), are not A-optimal.  相似文献

Fractional factorial split-plot (FFSP) designs have received much attention in recent years. In this article, the matrix representation for FFSP designs with multi-level factors is first developed, which is an extension of the one proposed by Bingham and Sitter (1999b Bingham , D. , Sitter , R. R. ( 1999b ). Some theoretical results for fractional factorial split-plot designs . Ann. Statist. 27 : 12401255 . [Google Scholar]) for the two-level case. Based on this representation, periodicity results of maximum resolution and minimum aberration for such designs are derived. Two symmetric fractional factorial designs with qualitative and quantitative factors are equivalent if the design matrix of one can be obtained from the design matrix of the other by row and column permutations, relabeling of the levels of the qualitative factors and reversal of the levels of the quantitative factors. In this paper, necessary and sufficient methods of determining equivalence of any two symmetric designs with both types of factors are given. An algorithm used to check equivalence or non-equivalence is evaluated. If two designs are equivalent the algorithm gives a set of permutations which map one design to the other. Fast screening methods for non-equivalence are considered. Extensions of results to asymmetric fractional factorial designs with qualitative and quantitative factors are discussed.  相似文献

This paper discusses the issue of choosing optimal designs when both blocking and foldover techniques are simultaneously employed to nonregular two-level fractional factorial designs. By using the indicator function, the treatment and block generalized wordlength patterns of the combined blocked design under a general foldover plan are defined. Some general properties of combined block designs are also obtained. Our results extend the findings of Ai et al. (2010) from regular designs to nonregular designs. Based on these theoretical results, a catalog of optimal blocking and foldover plans in terms of the generalized aberration criterion for nonregular initial design with 12, 16 and 20 runs is tabulated, respectively.  相似文献

In industrial experiments on both design (control) factors and noise factors aimed at improving the quality of manufactured products, designs are needed which afford independent estimation of all design×noise interactions in as few runs as possible, while allowing aliasing between those factorial effects of less interest. An algorithm for generating orthogonal fractional factorial designs of this type is described for factors at two levels. The generated designs are appropriate for experimenting on individual factors or for experimentation involving group screening of factors.  相似文献

The singular value decomposition of a real matrix always exists and is essentially unique. Based on the singular value decomposition of the design matrices of two general 2-level fractional factorial designs, new necessary and sufficient conditions for the determination of combinatorial equivalence or non-equivalence of the corresponding designs are derived. Equivalent fractional factorial designs have identical statistical properties for estimation of factorial contrasts and for model fitting. Non-equivalent designs, however, may have the same statistical properties under one particular model but different properties under a different model. Orthogonal factorial and fractional factorial designs are very popular in many experimental studies, particularly the two-level and three-level designs used in screening experiments. When an experimenter is able to specify the set of possibly nonnegligible factorial effects, it is sometimes possible to obtain an orthogonal design belonging to the class of parallel flats designs, that has a smaller run-size than a suitable design from the class of classical fractional factorial designs belonging to the class of single flat designs. Sri-vastava and Li (1996) proved a fundamental theorem of orthogonal s-level, s being a prime, designs of parallel flats type for the user-specified resolution. They also tabulated a series of orthogonal designs for the two-level case. No orthogonal designs for three-level case are available in their paper. In this paper, we present a simple proof for the theorem given in Srivastava and Li (1996) for the three-level case. We also give a dual form of the theorem, which is more useful for developing an algorithm for construction of orthogonal designs. Some classes of three-level orthogonal designs with practical run-size are given in the paper.  相似文献

Summary.  We introduce a new method for generating optimal split-plot designs. These designs are optimal in the sense that they are efficient for estimating the fixed effects of the statistical model that is appropriate given the split-plot design structure. One advantage of the method is that it does not require the prior specification of a candidate set. This makes the production of split-plot designs computationally feasible in situations where the candidate set is too large to be tractable. The method allows for flexible choice of the sample size and supports inclusion of both continuous and categorical factors. The model can be any linear regression model and may include arbitrary polynomial terms in the continuous factors and interaction terms of any order. We demonstrate the usefulness of this flexibility with a 100-run polypropylene experiment involving 11 factors where we found a design that is substantially more efficient than designs that are produced by using other approaches.  相似文献

Several criteria have been proposed for ranking blocked fractional factorial designs. For large fractional factorial designs, the most appropriate minimum aberration criterion was one proposed by Cheng and Wu (2002). We justify this assertion and propose a novel construction method to overcome the computational challenge encountered in large fractional factorial designs. Tables of minimum aberration blocked designs are presented for N=128 runs and n=8–64 factors.  相似文献

Combinatorial extension and composition methods have been extensively used in the construction of block designs. One of the composition methods, namely the direct product or Kronecker product method was utilized by Chakravarti [1956] to produce certain types of fractional factorial designs. The present paper shows how the direct sum operation can be utilized in obtaining from initial fractional factorial designs for two separate symmetrical factorials a fractional factorial design for the corresponding asymmetrical factorial. Specifically, we provide some results which are useful in the construction of non-singular fractional factorial designs via the direct sum composition method. In addition a modified direct sum method is discussed and the consequences of imposing orthogonality are explored.  相似文献
