This article describes our experience in, and recommendations for, teaching introductory statistics service courses to graduate students. Drawing on the student's research orientation, the instructor can present statistics as a valuable component of the scientific method, using examples from the student's particular discipline(s). Statistically qualified course instructors may be affiliated with statistics or other departments, and the course may be offered within any department. Course goals can range from training students to function independently as statistical analysts in future research to training students to consult a qualified statistician about design and analysis issues.  相似文献

Numerous professional fields have an increasing need for individuals trained in statistics and other quantitative analysis techniques. Today there exists great potential to fulfill this need by providing opportunities through online learning. However, to provide a high-quality education for returning adult professionals seeking advanced degrees in applied statistics online, many challenges need to be overcome. Based on our experience developing Penn State University’s online program in applied statistics, we discuss the evolution of the program’s curriculum, recruitment and development of online faculty, and meeting the requirements of students as important areas that require consideration in the development of an online program. We also highlight program evaluation strategies employed to ensure innovation and improvement in online education as cornerstones to a program’s success.  相似文献

This paper discusses the role of statistics within an interdisciplinary program on real problem solving in elementary schools (through grade 8). We first describe some general features of the USMES (Unified Science and Mathematics for Elementary Schools) curriculum and some situations where the application of statistical principles and techniques can enter the program. Then we present our ideas concerning the kinds of statistical methods that are appropriate in this environment, and we discuss the use of this material with both elementary school students and elementary  相似文献

University courses in elementary statistics are usually taught from a frequentist perspective. In this paper I suggest how such courses can be taught using a Bayesian approach, and I indicate why beginning students are well served by a Bayesian course. A principal focus of any good elementary course is the application of statistics to real and important scientific problems. The Bayesian approach fits neatly with a scientific focus. Bayesians take a larger view, and one not limited to data analysis. In particular, the Bayesian approach is subjective, and requires assessing prior probabilities. This requirement forces users to relate current experimental evidence to other available information–-including previous experiments of a related nature, where “related” is judged subjectively. I discuss difficulties faced by instructors and students in elementary Bayesian courses, and provide a sample syllabus for an elementary Bayesian course.  相似文献

In this article, multiple scan statistics of variable window sizes are derived for independent and identically distributed 0-1 Bernoulli trials. Both one and two dimensional, as well as, conditional and unconditional cases are treated. The advantage in using multiple scan statistics, as opposed to single fixed window scan statistics, is that they are more sensitive in detecting a change in the underlying distribution of the observed data. We show how to derive simple approximations for the significance level of these testing procedures and present numerical results to evaluate their performance.  相似文献

Introductory statistics courses should incorporate unstructured projects where students themselves generate the problems they choose to study, gather their own data, analyze the information using suitable computer software, and communicate their findings in a report. This article describes my experience with projects in the context of a large lecture course where projects are carried out in groups. Special problems that arise with group projects are discussed. A survey of business schools was conducted to obtain information about the current state of the teaching of business statistics to students enrolled in M.B.A. degree programs. The survey was undertaken for and presented at a June 1986 conference on “Making Statistics More Effective in Schools of Business,” held at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. Information was elicited concerning both the required statistics sequence and elective statistics courses for M.B.A. students, as well as computer usage in these courses. A dataset consisting of salaries of major league baseball players is published at the start of each season in USA Today, and is also made available on the Internet. It is argued that such an easily available dataset and those similar to it can be successfully used by students in a first statistics course for an interesting introduction to data analysis through summary measures and graphical displays. Such an approach is most natural for many students because of a strong interest in sports and economics. Other statistical ideas can be explored as a natural consequence of the discussions that ensue from such an analysis.  相似文献

The growing popular realization that American product quality and productivity are no longer without challenge for world leadership presents an opportunity for the American statistical community to make stronger contributions to sound industrial practice than it has in the past. Management consultants, such as Deming and Juran, are promoting philosophies that contain strong statistical components and are being heard by top U.S. executives. There are thus growing opportunities for industrial statisticians. Upon reviewing the content of typical graduate-level statistical quality control courses and books in the light of the present situation, we find them to be inadequate and in some cases to suffer from inappropriate emphases. In this article we discuss our perceptions of what is needed in the way of a new graduate-level course in statistics for quality and productivity (SQP). We further offer for discussion a syllabus for such a course (which is a modification of one used at Iowa State in the 1983 spring semester), some comments on how specific topics might be approached, and also a partially annotated list of references for material that we believe belongs in a modern SQP course.  相似文献

An account to extreme value theory for progressively Type-II censored order statistics is presented which enables us to handle limit laws for upper and lower extreme, intermediate and central progressively Type-II censored order statistics within one framework. We illustrate that the extreme value analysis for progressively Type-II censored order statistics is connected to limit laws for sums of independent but not-identically distributed exponential random variables. Moreover, we show that the limits are transformations of extreme value distributions and illustrate the connection to extreme value analysis for order statistics.  相似文献

The American Statistical Association's primary founder, Lemuel Shattuck, was driven by a passion for collecting and disseminating accurate information on vital statistics, public health, and other statistically related concerns. The 175th anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the education-related reasons ASA was founded and what it has done in education since its founding, especially in the past 25 years since the 150th anniversary. An examination of early and more recent issues of the ASA's journals reveals some common themes that have recurred over the past 175 years. We discuss what those themes are and what the ASA is doing to address them currently, and then conclude by discussing what ASA members can do to help.  相似文献
