In this paper, we consider the problem of estimation of semi-linear regression models. Using invariance arguments, Bhowmik and King [2007. Maximal invariant likelihood based testing of semi-linear models. Statist. Papers 48, 357–383] derived the probability density function of the maximal invariant statistic for the non-linear component of these models. Using this density function as a likelihood function allows us to estimate these models in a two-step process. First the non-linear component parameters are estimated by maximising the maximal invariant likelihood function. Then the non-linear component, with the parameter values replaced by estimates, is treated as a regressor and ordinary least squares is used to estimate the remaining parameters. We report the results of a simulation study conducted to compare the accuracy of this approach with full maximum likelihood and maximum profile-marginal likelihood estimation. We find maximising the maximal invariant likelihood function typically results in less biased and lower variance estimates than those from full maximum likelihood.  相似文献

The mixed linear model is a popular method for analysing unbalanced repeated measurement data. The classical statistical tests for parameters in this model are based on asymptotic theory that is unreliable in the small samples that are often encountered in practice. For testing a given fixed effect parameter with a small sample, we develop and investigate refined likelihood ratio (LR) tests. The refinements considered are the Bartlett correction and use of the Cox–Reid adjusted likelihood; these are examined separately and in combination. We illustrate the various LR tests on an actual data set and compare them in two simulation studies. The conventional LR test yields type I error rates that are higher than nominal. The adjusted LR test yields rates that are lower than nominal, with absolute accuracy similar to that of the conventional LR test in the first simulation study and better in the second. The Bartlett correction substantially improves the accuracy of the type I error rates with either the conventional or the adjusted LR test. In many cases, error rates that are very close to nominal are achieved with the refined methods.  相似文献

When using multilevel regression models that incorporate cluster-specific random effects, the Wald and the likelihood ratio (LR) tests are used for testing the null hypothesis that the variance of the random effects distribution is equal to zero. We conducted a series of Monte Carlo simulations to examine the effect of the number of clusters and the number of subjects per cluster on the statistical power to detect a non-null random effects variance and to compare the empirical type I error rates of the Wald and LR tests. Statistical power increased with increasing number of clusters and number of subjects per cluster. Statistical power was greater for the LR test than for the Wald test. These results applied to both the linear and logistic regressions, but were more pronounced for the latter. The use of the LR test is preferable to the use of the Wald test.  相似文献

This paper considers the likelihood ratio (LR) tests of stationarity, common trends and cointegration for multivariate time series. As the distribution of these tests is not known, a bootstrap version is proposed via a state- space representation. The bootstrap samples are obtained from the Kalman filter innovations under the null hypothesis. Monte Carlo simulations for the Gaussian univariate random walk plus noise model show that the bootstrap LR test achieves higher power for medium-sized deviations from the null hypothesis than a locally optimal and one-sided Lagrange Multiplier (LM) test that has a known asymptotic distribution. The power gains of the bootstrap LR test are significantly larger for testing the hypothesis of common trends and cointegration in multivariate time series, as the alternative asymptotic procedure – obtained as an extension of the LM test of stationarity – does not possess properties of optimality. Finally, it is shown that the (pseudo-)LR tests maintain good size and power properties also for the non-Gaussian series. An empirical illustration is provided.  相似文献

We evaluated the properties of six statistical methods for testing equality among populations with zero-inflated continuous distributions. These tests are based on likelihood ratio (LR), Wald, central limit theorem (CLT), modified CLT (MCLT), parametric jackknife (PJ), and nonparametric jackknife (NPJ) statistics. We investigated their statistical properties using simulated data from mixed distributions with an unknown portion of non zero observations that have an underlying gamma, exponential, or log-normal density function and the remaining portion that are excessive zeros. The 6 statistical tests are compared in terms of their empirical Type I errors and powers estimated through 10,000 repeated simulated samples for carefully selected configurations of parameters. The LR, Wald, and PJ tests are preferred tests since their empirical Type I errors were close to the preset nominal 0.05 level and each demonstrated good power for rejecting null hypotheses when the sample sizes are at least 125 in each group. The NPJ test had unacceptable empirical Type I errors because it rejected far too often while the CLT and MCLT tests had low testing powers in some cases. Therefore, these three tests are not recommended for general use but the LR, Wald, and PJ tests all performed well in large sample applications.  相似文献

A test for the mutual independence of subvectors of the p-dimensional random vector X , distributed as N( 0, S? ), is described. The test is based on the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of the off-(block) diagonal elements of S?. It is shown that the resulting test statistic is much easier to compute than the likelihood ratio (LR) test statistic while retaining the same asymptotic power properties in view of the general properties of tests based on the MLEs (ML test) and the likelihood ratio (LR test).  相似文献

In this article, we propose a testing technique for multivariate heteroscedasticity, which is expressed as a test of linear restrictions in a multivariate regression model. Four test statistics with known asymptotical null distributions are suggested, namely the Wald, Lagrange multiplier (LM), likelihood ratio (LR) and the multivariate Rao F-test. The critical values for the statistics are determined by their asymptotic null distributions, but bootstrapped critical values are also used. The size, power and robustness of the tests are examined in a Monte Carlo experiment. Our main finding is that all the tests limit their nominal sizes asymptotically, but some of them have superior small sample properties. These are the F, LM and bootstrapped versions of Wald and LR tests.  相似文献

This paper deals with testing for non-linearity in a regression model with one possibly non-linear component being estimated non-parametrically using smoothing splines. We propose two new variance–covariance based tests for detecting non-linearity applying a likelihood ratio hypothesis testing approach. The first test is for the inclusion of a possibly non-linear component and the second one is for linearity of a possibly non-linear component. The tests are based on a stochastic model in state space form given by Wahba (J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 40 (1978) 364), Wecker and Ansley (J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 78 (1983) 81) and de Jong and Mazzi (Modeling and smoothing unequally spaced sequence data, University of York and University of British Columbia, Unpublished paper) for which smoothing splines provide an optimal estimate. Pitrun (A smoothing spline approach to non-linear interface for time series, Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics, Monash University, Unpublished Ph.D. thesis) derived the variance–covariance structure of this model, which allows the use of a marginal likelihood approach. This leads naturally to marginal-likelihood based likelihood ratio tests for non-linearity. Small sample properties of the new tests have been investigated via Monte Carlo studies.  相似文献

We derive general distribution tests based on the method of maximum entropy (ME) density. The proposed tests are derived from maximizing the differential entropy subject to given moment constraints. By exploiting the equivalence between the ME and maximum likelihood (ML) estimates for the general exponential family, we can use the conventional likelihood ratio (LR), Wald, and Lagrange multiplier (LM) testing principles in the maximum entropy framework. In particular, we use the LM approach to derive tests for normality. Monte Carlo evidence suggests that the proposed tests are compatible with and sometimes outperform some commonly used normality tests. We show that the proposed tests can be extended to tests based on regression residuals and non-i.i.d. data in a straightforward manner. An empirical example on production function estimation is presented.  相似文献

This article considers testing the significance of a regressor with a near unit root in a predictive regression model. The procedures discussed in this article are nonparametric, so one can test the significance of a regressor without specifying a functional form. The results are used to test the null hypothesis that the entire function takes the value of zero. We show that the standardized test has a normal distribution regardless of whether there is a near unit root in the regressor. This is in contrast to tests based on linear regression for this model where tests have a nonstandard limiting distribution that depends on nuisance parameters. Our results have practical implications in testing the significance of a regressor since there is no need to conduct pretests for a unit root in the regressor and the same procedure can be used if the regressor has a unit root or not. A Monte Carlo experiment explores the performance of the test for various levels of persistence of the regressors and for various linear and nonlinear alternatives. The test has superior performance against certain nonlinear alternatives. An application of the test applied to stock returns shows how the test can improve inference about predictability.  相似文献

In this paper we consider test of dimensionality in MANOVA model. For this testing problem, the likelihood ratio (=LR) test, Lawley-Hotelling (=LH) type test and Bartlett-Nanda-Pillai (=BNP) type test are often used. We obtain the asymptotic expansions of powers of these tests under the local alternatives. Also Bahadur exact slopes of these tests are obtained. Based on these results, we obtain a unified opinion concerning comparison of LR test, LH type test and BNP type test.  相似文献

Shiue and Bain proposed an approximate F statistic for testing equality of two gamma distribution scale parameters in presence of a common and unknown shape parameter. By generalizing Shiue and Bain's statistic we develop a new statistic for testing equality of L >= 2 gamma distribution scale parameters. We derive the distribution of the new statistic ESP for L = 2 and equal sample size situation. For other situations distribution of ESP is not known and test based on the ESP statistic has to be performed by using simulated critical values. We also derive a C(α) statistic CML and develop a likelihood ratio statistic, LR, two modified likelihood ratio statistics M and MLB and a quadratic statistic Q. The distribution of each of the statistics CML, LR, M, MLB and Q is asymptotically chi-square with L - 1 degrees of freedom. We then conducted a monte-carlo simulation study to compare the perfor- mance of the statistics ESP, LR, M, MLB, CML and Q in terms of size and power. The statistics LR, M, MLB and Q are in general liberal and do not show power advantage over other statistics. The statistic CML, based on its asymptotic chi-square distribution, in general, holds nominal level well. It is most powerful or nearly most powerful in most situations and is simple to use. Hence, we recommend the statistic CML for use in general. For better power the statistic ESP, based on its empirical distribution, is recommended for the special situation for which there is evidence in the data that λ1 < … < λL and n1 < … < nL, where λ1 …, λL are the scale parameters and n1,…, nL are the sample sizes.  相似文献

The Watson distribution is one of the most used distributions for modeling axial data. In some situations, it is important to investigate if several Watson populations differ significantly. In this paper, we develop likelihood ratio tests and the ANOVA for testing the hypothesis of the equality of the directional parameters of several Watson distributions with different concentrations. We also determine the empirical power of the ANOVA and LR tests for some dimensions of the sphere.  相似文献

In this article we investigate the effects of temporal aggregation on testing for a mean change of time series through a likelihood ratio (LR) test. We derive the functional relationship between non aggregate-model parameters and aggregate-model parameters. Using the relationship, we propose a modified LR test when aggregate data are used. Through the theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and empirical examples, we show that aggregation leads the null distribution of the LR test statistic being shifted to the left. Hence, the test power increases as the order of aggregation increases.  相似文献

This paper studies the efficient estimation of seemingly unrelated linear models with integrated regressors and stationary errors. We consider two cases. The first one has no common regressor among the equations. In this case, we show that by adding leads and lags of the first differences of the regressors and estimating this augmented dynamic regression model by generalized least squares using the long-run covariance matrix, we obtain an efficient estimator of the cointegrating vector that has a limiting mixed normal distribution. In the second case we consider, there is a common regressor to all equations, and we discuss efficient minimum distance estimation in this context. Simulation results suggests that our new estimator compares favorably with others already proposed in the literature. We apply these new estimators to the testing of the proportionality and symmetry conditions implied by purchasing power parity (PPP) among the G-7 countries. The tests based on the efficient estimates easily reject the joint hypotheses of proportionality and symmetry for all countries with either the United States or Germany as numeraire. Based on individual tests, our results suggest that Canada and Germany are the most likely countries for which the proportionality condition holds, and that Italy and Japan for the symmetry condition relative to the United States.  相似文献

In this study, testing the equality of mean vectors in a one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) is considered when each dataset has a monotone pattern of missing observations. The likelihood ratio test (LRT) statistic in a one-way MANOVA with monotone missing data is given. Furthermore, the modified test (MT) statistic based on likelihood ratio (LR) and the modified LRT (MLRT) statistic with monotone missing data are proposed using the decomposition of the LR and an asymptotic expansion for each decomposed LR. The accuracy of the approximation for the Chi-square distribution is investigated using a Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the methods.  相似文献

The powers of the likelihood ratio (LR) test and an “asymptotically (in some sense) optimum” invariant test are examined and compared by simulation techniques with those of several other relevant tests for the problem of testing the equality of two univariate normal population means under the assumption of heterogeneous variances but homogeneous coefficients of variation. It is seen that the LR test is highly satisfactory for all values of the coefficient of variation and the “asymptotically optimum” invariant test, which is computationally much simpler than the LR test, is a reasonably good competitor for cases where the value of the coefficient of variation is greater than or equal to 3. The importance of the normal distribution for fitting continuous data is well known. However, in many practical situations data distribution departs from normality. For example, the sample skewness and the sample kurtosis are far away from 0 and 3, respectively, which are nice properties of normal distributions. So, it is important to have formal tests of normality against any alternative. D'Agostino et al. [A suggestion for using powerful and informative tests of normality, Am. Statist. 44 (1990), pp. 316–321] review four procedures Z 2(g 1), Z 2(g 2), D and K 2 for testing departure from normality. The first two of these procedures are tests of normality against departure due to skewness and kurtosis, respectively. The other two tests are omnibus tests. An alternative to the normal distribution is a class of skew-normal distributions (see [A. Azzalini, A class of distributions which includes the normal ones, Scand. J. Statist. 12 (1985), pp. 171–178]). In this paper, we obtain a score test (W) and a likelihood ratio test (LR) of goodness of fit of the normal regression model against the skew-normal family of regression models. It turns out that the score test is based on the sample skewness and is of very simple form. The performance of these six procedures, in terms of size and power, are compared using simulations. The level properties of the three statistics LR, W and Z 2(g 1) are similar and close to the nominal level for moderate to large sample sizes. Also, their power properties are similar for small departure from normality due to skewness (γ1≤0.4). Of these, the score test statistic has a very simple form and computationally much simpler than the other two statistics. The LR statistic, in general, has highest power, although it is computationally much complex as it requires estimates of the parameters under the normal model as well as those under the skew-normal model. So, the score test may be used to test for normality against small departure from normality due to skewness. Otherwise, the likelihood ratio statistic LR should be used as it detects general departure from normality (due to both skewness and kurtosis) with, in general, largest power.  相似文献
