Summary Numerical changes and distribution patterns of the pine needle gall midge,Thecodiplosis japonensis
Uchida etInouye, were studied during the period from 1978 to 1979 in a young plantation ofPinus thunbergii in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The survivorship curve of this species was characterized by a low mortality of larvae in galls
and two high mortalities before the formation of galls and during the overwintering period in soil.
The within and between-trees distributions of eggs and larvae in galls were examined by using the
regression method. The egg distribution per shoot was aggregative both within and between host plants. The within-tree variations
in numbers of eggs per shoot were related to the differences in the abundance of available needles for oviposition per shoot
among the canopy layers. The between-tree variations reflected the heterogeneous emergence of adult females in the study plot.
The degree of aggregation increased from egg to gall stage in both within- and between-tree distributions and the increase
was explained by the different mortality of larvae within trees and the inversely density-dependent mortality between trees.
The distribution patterns in the soil habitat stages were examined by the patchness index (
). This species showed aggregative distributions in soil stages. There was a correlation in spatial patterns of adult emergence
between the successive generations.
The distribution properties of this species were discussed in connection with the population dynamics and the availability
of host plants in the study plot. 相似文献

Summary Dispersal, immigration and emigration rates, horizontal and vertical survivorship and absolute population size were estimated
for micropopulations ofAn. culicifacies, An. stephensi andAn. subpictus at a series of cattle sheds in rural Punjab Province, Pakistan, during November 1979 and May 1980 using capture-mark-release-recapture
and dissection methods. Dispersal was temperature-related, with populations more vagile during May. Mean dispersal distance
per individual was low for all species. More than 70% of all recaptures were taken at the point of release and the longest
detected flight was 1250 meters.
Horizontal survivorship was greater during November and was always less than vertical survivorship calculated from dissection
agegrading data. Survivorship during the nulliparous period was greater than survivorship throughout total life, indicating
the survivorship curve may be slightly sigmoid. Daily population sizes of endemic and immigrating females and males were calculated
usingBailey's (1952) modification of the Lincoln Index, with the daily captures adjusted for immigration which was highest in May. Daily
additions to the indoor resting population exclusive of immigrants were estimated using the method ofManly andParr (1968). The relationship of the present findings to malaria transmission and genetic control were discussed. 相似文献

Summary The population dynamics ofPryeria sinica was investigated in an undisturbed area in 1976–1979. We analyzed the process stabilizing the local population by the life
table approach for immature stages and the mark-recapture method for the adult stage. Females usually layed about 130 eggs
in an egg-mass. The shape of the survivorship curve was convex and was characterized by a relatively low mortality in the
egg and larval stages and by a relatively high mortality in the prepupal and pupal stages. The low mortality in the early
stage seemed to be not only due to the peculiar life cycle of this species (larvae develop in early spring when natural enemies
are not active) but due to their protective nest-webs, larval warning coloration and repellent smell. The high mortality after
cocooning was caused by severe parasitization byAgrothereutes minousubae. The number of adult in the population varied by 2.10-fold, which was less than that of other gregarious moths. The life
table data and field observations suggest that adult female dispersal would have acted as a stabilizing factor, andA. minousubae as a conditioning factor on the dynamics of the moth population. 相似文献

Summary Intra- and interspecific competition between laboratory populations of four green leafhoppers,Nephotettix spp. was studied in the laboratory under three different temperature regimes of 24°C, 27°C and 30°C. For the single-species
population of the three tropical species, the equilibrium density increased as the temperature increased. On the other hand,
for the temperature speciesN. cincticeps, the highest equilibrium density was at the intermediate temperature and the lowest at high temperature.
Interspecific interactions between two tropical (N. virescens vs.N. nigropictus), a tropical and a temperature (N. virescens vs.N. cincticeps) and a rice-feeding and a grass-inhabiting (N. virescens vs.N. malayanus) Nephotettix species were also studied in the laboratory at the three temperature regimes. Temperature differentially affected the outcome
of competition between twoNephotettix species. BetweenN. virescens andN. nigropictus, the latter was more successful over the former at low and intermediate temperatures, while the former was more successful
at high temperature. BetweenN. virescens andN. cincticeps, the temperate species inhibited the growth of the tropical species at low temperature while the tropical species inhibited
the growth of the temperate species at high temperature. At intermediate temperature, the population ofN. virescens persisted at a slightly higher density over the population ofN. cincticeps. Between the rice-feedingN. virescens and the grass-inhabitingN. malayanus, regardless of temperature the population density of the latter was greatly reduced and later became extinct while the population
of the former continued its growth. These consequences of competition between twoNephotettix species conformed fairly well to those predicted by theLotka-Volterra model using demographic parameters specified for each species. 相似文献

Summary This paper describes a series of experiments conducted to determine whySitophilus zeamais
Mots. andSitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) could not survive together in maize cultures in the laboratory. The effect ofS. zeamais on different developmental stages ofS. cerealella was investigated. The presence of adultS. zeamais slightly affected moth copulation, egg laying and moth eggs in a mixed culture, but large numbers of developing moths inside
maize grains were killed by the adult weevil through feeding on the grains. The major cause of elimination ofS. cerealella byS. zeamais from mixed cultures was therefore found to be damage to the immature moths in grain and such moth mortality increased as
the developing moths became bigger in the grains. A weevil: grain ratio of approximately 1.4∶1 was found to be the critical
weevil density at which the moth disappeared from the mixed cultures. 相似文献

Summary Survival rates and mortality factors of a migrant skipperParnara guttata were censused in paddy fields in 4 localities of central and western Japan during 1975–1980, and 10 life tables were developed
for 3 generations. Mortality rates of eggs, older larvae and pupae were high but those of younger larvae were very low. The
high mortality rate was caused by parasitoids. Ten primary and 6 secondary parasitoids were recorded. Out of three egg parasitoids,Telenomus sp. was predominant. Larval parasitoids,Apanteles baoris andPediobus mitsukurii which are specific to genusParnara were predominant in wet land habitat, i.e. paddy land. On the other hand, tachinid flies which have a wide host range and
a high searching ability were predominant in dry land habitats. Mortalities of eggs and pupae contribute more to the change
in the total mortality of immature stages than those of other stages. egg parasitoids which are the major mortality factor
of eggs acted density-dependently but larval and pupal parasitoids did not do so. The total mortality of immature stages occurred
more or less density-dependently. Larval density on rice plants scarecely affected the survival rate of larvae. 相似文献

Summary Life tables for worker honeybees covering all life span, and those for adults, were prepared for three seasonal cohorts,June bees, July bees andwintering bees. Survivorship curves forJune andJuly bees show a convex type being exceptional for insects, with relatively high mortality at egg and feeding larval stages and at
later adult stage after most bees became potential foragers. Adult longevity greatly lengthens inWinteriing bees and survivorship curve drops approximately with the same rate. A remarkable similarity of survivorship curves for men and
honeybees was demonstrated, apparently due to highly developed social care in both. Some comments were given on mortality
factors. The importance of life tables for population researches was shown by applying our result to the population growth
curve made byBodenheimer, based upon the data byNolan. At the asymptote of the uncorrected curve, the ratio of total population estimated by uncorrected curve to that by corrected
curve reaches about 3∶2.

Summary Sibling (cannibalism among siblings) and non-sibling cannibalism (cannibalism among non-siblings) were studied in a natural
population of a lady beetle,Harmonia axyridis
Pallas.
Of all the eggs laid (n=2269), 24.76% (n=562) were killed by sibling cannibalism and 36.10% (n=819) were killed by non-sibling cannibalism. Sibling cannibalism occurred constantly and intensively in most egg batches
throughout the entire oviposition period. On the other hand, non-sibling cannibalism was more intense in the middle and late
oviposition periods, and when the egg batches were close to an aphid colony. This may be due to the high density ofH. axyridis larvae relative to aphid density in the middle and late oviposition periods and also the larvae searching intensively near
an aphid colony. 相似文献

Summary The study was carried out in two (A and B) citrus groves to clarify the spatial distribution patterns of eggs and larvae,
and to analyse the mortality process of eggs. From the analysis by using the mean density and the mean crowding, it was clarified
that the distributions of eggs were contagious and that larvae were more contagiously distributed than eggs. The τ andz indices showed that the operation of egg mortality was inversely density-dependent in both groves, and that the degree of
inverse density-dependence was greater in A than in B grove. The spatial correlations between the emergence holes and the
eggs or larvae in each tree, which were analysed by using ω index, showed that the distributions were more overlapping between
the emergence holes and the larvae than the eggs. As the result of dividing trees into several groups according to the number
of emergence holes, it was clarified that the survival rates of eggs were positively correlated with the number of emergence
holes. In conclusion, inversely density-dependent mortality process was considered to be caused by lower mortality rates of
eggs in the trees with more emergence holes. Especially in A grove, because the trees with more emergence holes were larger
in diameter and more egg oviposition, the inversely density-dependent mortality process was considered to be detected more
conspicuously than in B grove. 相似文献

Summary A model was made to clarify the basic processes of competition to occur among larvae by the exploitation as defined byBakker (1969). It was found that this model is applicable to the experimental results on the food exploitation amongDroshophila larvae obtained byBakker (1961). In the model the preimaginal stage is divided into two periods;T
f
which is the time that a group of larvae spends in exhausting the food after hatching, andT
s
which is the duration of the starvation period afterT
f
.T
f
and thenW
l
(larval body weight) just after the end ofT
f
are decided byF
s
(amount of food supplied per larva at larval hatching) andF
c
(amount of food consumed per larva).T
f
affects on the onset ofT
s
as well asR
l
(rate of decrease in the individual body weight duringT
s
).W
a
(weight of emerging adults) is gotten by a subtraction ofR
l
fromW
l
just after the end ofT
f
,R
e
is affected directly by these components ofW
l
andR
l
. As a result,W

andR

are expressed by functions ofF
s
. This model confirmed that the food exploitation lead to the competition of scramble type. Finally it was suggested that
there exist some strategies which prevent ill-effects owing to the food exploitation. 相似文献

Summary Experimental observations on the arrenotokous reproductive patterns of two spider mite species (Acari: Tetranychidae), the
long-seta form ofSchizotetranychus celarius (Banks) andTetranychus urticae
Koch, revealed that reproduction of unfertilized females of the former is very differnt from that of the latter. Unfertilized
females ofS. celarius, which has a subsocial life, laid a few eggs and then became inactive. In contrast, the fecundity of unfertilizedT. urticae females was only slightly reduced as compared with fertilized females. Mother-son matings may thus sometimes occur in naturalS. celarius populations.
A two-year field survey revealed that, in the absence of males, overwintering females ofS. celarius occasionally remain unfertilized until early spring. Furthermore, nest foundation observed in late spring indicated that
most of the season's first nests were founded by single females. These two sets of observations strongly suggest that motherson
mating takes places in nature, corresponding to the reproductive trait seen in the experiment.
Mother-son mating inevitably increases the relatedness between nest members. The estimated father's relatedness to its offspring
is extraordinarily high under such condition. The possibility that kin-selection in the long seta-form ofS. celarius led to subsociality, especially paternal care, is suggested.

Summary A mark-release-recapture experiment to estimate population survivorship and absolute size was performed with wild-caughtAn. subpictus adults at the village of Khano-Harni, Lahore District, Punjab Province, Pakistan during September 1978, the end of the monsoon
rainy season, when temporal population abundance was maximized. Daily survival rate estimated from the recapture sequence
of marked adults was low, males=0.192 and females=0.343. Survivorship for females estimated by several vertical age-grading
procedures ranged from 0.347 to 0.628. Both stage- and age-specific life tables were calculated from vertical age-grading
data determined by the dilatation method. Female and male population size was estimated byBailey’s modification of theLincoln Index and was found to average 4478.4 and 6106.8, respectively. The bionomics, survivorship and population size ofAn. subpictus in the Lahore are indicated that this species was probably not important in the transmission of human malaria. 相似文献

Summary Dispersal propensity of green leafhoppers was compared between a tropical species,Nephotettix virescens, and a temperate species,N. cincticeps. The flight ability was measured with tethered flight technique under laboratory conditions (25°C, 16L-8D). The pre-flight
period was shorter and the flight duration was longer inN. virescens than inN. cincticeps in both sexes. No significant correlations were found between the flight activity and morphometric characters for either
of the two species. The results suggested that dispersal propensity ofN. virescens is higher than that ofN. cincticeps. 相似文献

Summary The population dynamics ofNephotettix virescens, a vector of rice tungro virus disease was investigated in a synchronized transplanting area at Jatisari (1984–1986), West
Java and in a staggered transplanting area at Sidan (1986–1988), Bali, Indonesia. The FARMCOP suction sampler was employed
for population censuses ofN. virescens and its natural enemies. The population growth pattern was affected by transplanting pattern: In the staggered transplanting
area, the population density increased from the immigrant generation to the first generation, and sharply decrease thereafter,
while in the synchronized transplanting area the population density often reached the highest peak in the second generation.
The degree of contageousness in the spatial distribution ofN. virescens was negatively correlated with population density of the immigrant generation.

Summary This paper has examined the effect of within-stage mortality on the estimation of stage-specific survival rates bySouthwood's (1978, p. 358) method. As pointed out bySouthwood, both the severity and timing of mortality affect the mean duration of a life stage, and consequently the estimate of the
number of individuals entering that stage. Knowledge of the form of the survivorship curve permits correction of the estimate
under certain circumstances. The use ofSouthwood's method with two overlapping stages having different rates and patterns of mortality leads to complex errors in the estimation
of survival for the first stage. The nature of these errors is examined analytically and via a simulation model.Southwood's method is fairly robust, with moderate differences in mortality rates leading to acceptable errors in estimating survival
for the first stage. When both the rate and pattern of mortality in both life stages are the same, then the survival estimate
is made without error. Precise estimates of stage-specific survival will not usually be possible withSouthwood's method because of the errors introduced by the very parameters being measured. Direct measurement of mortality rates and
survivorship patterns (seeSouthwood, 1978, p. 309) is strongly advised, at least in preliminary work. 相似文献

Summary Based on the results of ecological surveys ofAdoxophyes orana and its natural enemies in apple orchards sprayed with the granulosis virus and control plots, we constructed working models
to simulate the population dynamics in three different experimental plots; those treated with chemical insecticides, those
with granulosis virus, and controls. The number of individuals killed by predators, parasitoids and by miscellaneous mortality
factors could be calculated on the assumption of imperfect density relations; that is, relation of the number killed by each
factor with the initial number of larvae was represented by a curve with an upper asymptote. We could estimate the proportion
of virus infection using curves with upper asymptotes. Rate of increase from pupa to middle instar larvae of the next generation
was subject to strong density-effect.
Simulation we proposed in this paper suggests a possibility that a single spray of the virus at 1st generation can reduce
not only the number ofA. orana larvae in the 2nd and 3rd generations but also the degree of fruits injured by this insect. Spray of chemical insecticide
is considered to be ineffective in reducing the pest density and the degree of injury to low levels in subsequent generations,
as compared with untreated plot, where the density of the 1st generation larvae is low. 相似文献

Summary
Luehdorfia butterflies lay eggs in clusters. Clones of their host plants (Asiasarum andHeterotropa) are distributed pacthily among the understory of deciduous forests. Groups ofLuehdorfia larvae often exhaust the clones and may wander over the forest floor seeking new clones. The highest mortality observed is
during this wandering period. To elucidate whyLuehdorfia butterflies lay eggs in clusters, a simulation experiment was made for hypothetical populations which lay eggs in clusters
or singly. Field data on larval mortality, consumption, density of host clones and leaf weight forLuehdorfia japonica were incorporated into the model. The predictions of the simulation were: (1) When the egg density is low, the single egg
type could leave many more pupae than the egg clustering type, but when the egg density is high, the former might leave smaller
number of pupae than the latter; and (2) There are optimal sizes of egg clusters for different egg densities and the optimal
size becomes larger as the egg density increased.

Summary A statistical and graphic study is presented of the wastage of eggs byVenturia (=Nemeritis) canescens when searching singly and in groups of 10 among hosts at four different host densities in laboratory universes as described
byHuffaker andMatsumoto (preceding paper of this journal). The host insect was the fluour mothAnagasta kühniella and the host densities used were 10, 30, 100 and 200 per universe. Intensity of egg wastage due to superparasitim varied
significantly according to host density, and between the two parasite densities employed, 1 and 10, using bothF-tests and chi-square tests. Plots ofk-factor analysis on this egg wastage showed high negative correlations with host density, and the raw data for single parasites
was well represented by a parabola while that for the grouped parasites departed from this relationship only at the lowest
host density.
These studies were conducted as a part of a general investigation into the processes operating in the population dynamics
of arthropods under grants from the National Institutes of Health, U. S. Public Health Service (#A10-1611), and the National

Summary Difficulty arises in applying marking-and-recapture methods to insects when the probability of recapture of marked individuals
is changed with advancing age, either due to detachment of the mark by moulting (in the case of larvae) or to changes in their
survival rate or their behaviour. A modification of the re-recapture method (Leslie
et al., 1953) has been devised to analyze the capture-recapture data of the 5th-instar larvae and adults ofNezara viridula L. Estimation of the rate of moulting to the adult stage is made with the aid of additional information on larval survival.
Migration rates of the larvae between the two halves of the census field is estimated byIwao's (1963) method. Through these analyses, the dynamic feature of the population during transition from the 5th instar to, adult
is revealed. Several problems involved in the application of marking-and-recapture methods to insect populations are discussed.

Summary Population dynamics ofNephotettix virescens was studied in 17 paddy fields transplanted at intervals of about 1 month in 1988–1990. The adult density was highest either
in the immigrant or the 1st generation and sharply decreased to the 2nd generation. The survival rate of the 1st generation
was lowest in the transition season when areal population density increased. Key factor analysis revealed that the nymphal
and adult mortality of the 1st generation (kn) was the principal source of population fluctuations. No significant correaltion
was found between kn and natural enemy density, natural enemy density/healthy egg density, or the precipitation during the
nymphal period. On these bases adult emigration was suspected to be the key factor. Areal population build-up ofN. virescens in the transition season was considered to occur as a result of increasing immigration to young stages of rice.
