The introduction of shape parameters into statistical distributions provided flexible models that produced better fit to experimental data. The Weibull and gamma families are prime examples wherein shape parameters produce more reliable statistical models than standard exponential models in lifetime studies. In the presence of many independent gamma populations, one may test equality (or homogeneity) of shape parameters. In this article, we develop two tests for testing shape parameters of gamma distributions using chi-square distributions, stochastic majorization, and Schur convexity. The first one tests hypotheses on the shape parameter of a single gamma distribution. We numerically examine the performance of this test and find that it controls Type I error rate for small samples. To compare shape parameters of a set of independent gamma populations, we develop a test that is unbiased in the sense of Schur convexity. These tests are motivated by the need to have simple, easy to use tests and accurate procedures in case of small samples. We illustrate the new tests using three real datasets taken from engineering and environmental science. In addition, we investigate the Bayes’ factor in this context and conclude that for small samples, the frequentist approach performs better than the Bayesian approach.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new measure of fit which can be used in the case of quantile–quantile plots. This measure, when applied to Small's and Srivastava's graphical methods provides two new tests for assessing multivariate normality. For different sample sizes and numbers of variables, the critical values of these tests were evaluated via simulations. The power of the new tests and its comparison with some other tests for multivariate normality are presented herein.  相似文献

It is often assumed in situations in which life data from Weibull or extreme-value distributions are involved that data in different samples come from extreme-value distributions with the same scale parameter (equivalently, Weibull distributions with the same shape parameter). This paper proposes a number of tests for homogeneity for extreme-value scale parameters, based on a number of commonly used estimators for these scale parameters. Previous theoretical work and some simulation results provided here indicate that the null distributions of the test statistics proposed are well approximated by the x2 distribution under a wide range of conditions  相似文献

Comparing the variances of several independent samples is a classic problem and many tests have been proposed in the literature. Conover et al. [Conover, W.J., Johnson, M.E. and Johnson, M.M., 1981, A comparative study of tests for homogeneity of variances with applications to the outer continental self bidding data. Technometrics, 23, 351–361.] and Shoemaker [Shoemaker, L.H., 1995, Tests for difference in dispersion based on quantiles. The American Statistician, 49 (2), 179–182.] find that the existing tests lack power for skewed sampling distributions. To address this problem, we studied the effect of an a priori symmetrization of the data on the performance of tests for homogeneity of variances. This article also updates the comprehensive comparative study of Conover et al.  相似文献

Six procedures which convert tests of homogeneity of variance into tests for mean equality for independent groups are compared. The tests are the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Welch F statistics. The Welch statistics are included since it was anticipated that ANOVA would not provide a robust test when samples of unequal sizes are obtained from non-normal populations. However, the Welch tests are not found to be uniformly preferrable. In addition, a prior recommendation for Miller's jackknife procedure is not supported for the unequal sample size case. The data indicates that the current tests for variance heterogeneity are either sensitive to non-normality or, if robust, lacking in power. Therefore, these tests cannot be recommended for the purpose of testing the validity of the ANOVA homogeneity assumption.  相似文献

In the article, the tests are constructed for the hypotheses that p ? 2 independent samples have the same distribution density (homogeneity hypothesis) or have the same well-defined distribution density (goodness-of-fit test). The limiting power of the constructed tests is found for some local “close” alternatives.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we consider testing the homogeneity of risk differences in independent binomial distributions especially when data are sparse. We point out some drawback of existing tests in either controlling a nominal size or obtaining powers through theoretical and numerical studies. The proposed test is designed to avoid the drawbacks of existing tests. We present the asymptotic null distribution and asymptotic power function for the proposed test. We also provide numerical studies including simulations and real data examples showing the proposed test has reliable results compared to existing testing procedures.  相似文献

As a measure of certainty, informational energy has been used in many statistical problems. In this article, we introduce some estimators of this quantity by modifying the basic estimator available in the literature. The new measures are then used to develop tests of uniformity. A Monte Carlo simulation study is performed to evaluate power behavior of the proposed tests. The results confirm the preference of the new tests in some situations.  相似文献

The generalized variance plays on important and useful role as a measure to compare overall variability of different populations in biological sciences (Goodman, 1968; Kocherlakota and Kocherlakota, 1983; Sokai, 1965). Here we present simple and elegant multivariate analogues to Bartlett's and Hartley's tests of homogeneity. Large sample distributions of the statistics are presented and the practical usefulness of the tests are demonstrated throught several examples.  相似文献

This paper examines the use of homogeneity tests prior to tests of overall association among g 2 x 2 tables. When placed in the context of a one-way analysis of variance, hypotheses of overall association and homogeneity can be viewed as hypotheses regarding mean and treatment effects, respectively. In this context, the need for homogeneity tests is presented. What constitutes a relevant test of homogeneity is also examined. The conclusion is that some of the difficulties raised in the literature regarding tests of homogeneity stem from differences in the hypothesis of association being examined.  相似文献

In this paper a new class of non-parametric tests for testing homogeneity of several populations against scale alternatives is proposed. For this, independent samples of fixed sizes are drawn from each population and from these samples, all possible sub-samples of the same size are drawn and their maxima and minima are computed. Using these extreme the class of tests is obtained. Tests of this type have been offered for the two-sample slippage problem by Kochar (1978). Under certain conditions, this class of tests is shown to be consistent against ‘difference in scale’ alternatives. The test has been compared with Bhapkar's V-test (1961), Deshpande's D-test (1965), Sugiura's Drs-test (1965) and with a classical test given by Lehmann (1959, pp. 273–275). It is shown that some members of this proposed class of tests are more efficient than the first three tests in the case of uniform, Laplace and normal distributions, when the number of populations compared is small.  相似文献

Using divergence measures based on entropy functions, a procedure to test statistical hypotheses is proposed. Replacing the parameters by suitable estimators in the expresion of the divergence measure, the test statistics are obtained. Asymptotic distributions for these statistics are given in several cases when maximum likelihood estimators are considered, so they can be used to construct confidence intervals and to test statistical hypotheses based on one or more samples. These results can also be applied to multinomial populations. Tests of goodness of fit and tests of homogeneity can be constructed.  相似文献

The assessment of overall homogeneity of time‐to‐event curves is a key element in survival analysis in biomedical research. The currently commonly used testing methods, e.g. log‐rank test, Wilcoxon test, and Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, may have a significant loss of statistical testing power under certain circumstances. In this paper we propose a new testing method that is robust for the comparison of the overall homogeneity of survival curves based on the absolute difference of the area under the survival curves using normal approximation by Greenwood's formula. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to investigate the performance of the new testing method compared against the log‐rank, Wilcoxon, and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests under a variety of circumstances. The proposed new method has robust performance with greater power to detect the overall differences than the log‐rank, Wilcoxon, and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests in many scenarios in the simulations. Furthermore, the applicability of the new testing approach is illustrated in a real data example from a kidney dialysis trial. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this work, non parametric tests are proposed for testing the homogeneity of two or more populations. The tests are based on recently obtained characterizations. The test procedure is based on the permutation bootstrap technique. For the two-sample case the new tests are compared with permutation tests based on the empirical characteristic function and some other tests. The comparison is fulfilled via a Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Conditional tests are constructed by conditioning a fit measure to a minimal sufficient statistic. To calculate the p-value of these tests, Monte Carlo methods with co-sufficient samples can be used. In this paper we show how to simulate co-sufficient samples when the data distribution belongs to the exponential family with doubly transitive sufficient statistics. The proposed method is illustrated using the beta distribution.  相似文献

We propose a new procedure for combining multiple tests in samples of right-censored observations. The new method is based on multiple constrained censored empirical likelihood where the constraints are formulated as linear functionals of the cumulative hazard functions. We prove a version of Wilks’ theorem for the multiple constrained censored empirical likelihood ratio, which provides a simple reference distribution for the test statistic of our proposed method. A useful application of the proposed method is, for example, examining the survival experience of different populations by combining different weighted log-rank tests. Real data examples are given using the log-rank and Gehan-Wilcoxon tests. In a simulation study of two sample survival data, we compare the proposed method of combining tests to previously developed procedures. The results demonstrate that, in addition to its computational simplicity, the combined test performs comparably to, and in some situations more reliably than previously developed procedures. Statistical software is available in the R package ‘emplik’.  相似文献

We propose nonparametric homogeneity tests for related samples against much wider than location (or scale) class of alternatives including possible crossings of marginal cumulative distribution functions. The tests can be used in the case of complete and censored samples. Asymptotic distribution of the test statistics is investigated.  相似文献

In this article, we address the problem of mining and analyzing multivariate functional data. That is, data where each observation is a set of possibly correlated functions. Complex data of this kind is more and more common in many research fields, particularly in the biomedical context. In this work, we propose and apply a new concept of depth measure for multivariate functional data. With this new depth measure it is possible to generalize robust statistics, such as the median, to the multivariate functional framework, which in turn allows the application of outlier detection, boxplots construction, and nonparametric tests also in this more general framework. We present an application to Electrocardiographic (ECG) signals.  相似文献

The problem of testing homogeneity in contingency tables when the data are spatially correlated is considered. We derive statistics defined as divergences between unrestricted and restricted estimated joint cell probabilities and we show that they are asymptotically distributed as linear combinations of chi-square random variables under the null hypothesis of homogeneity. Monte Carlo simulation experiments are carried out to investigate the behavior of the new divergence test statistics and to make comparisons with the statistics that do not take into account the spatial correlation. We show that some of the introduced divergence test statistics have a significantly better behavior than the classical chi-square test for the problem under consideration when we compare them on the basis of the simulated sizes and powers.  相似文献

Three modified tests for homogeneity of the odds ratio for a series of 2 × 2 tables are studied when the data are clustered. In the case of clustered data, the standard tests for homogeneity of odds ratios ignore the variance inflation caused by positive correlation among responses of subjects within the same cluster, and therefore have inflated Type I error. The modified tests adjust for the variance inflation in the three existing standard tests: Breslow–Day, Tarone and the conditional score test. The degree of clustering effect is measured by the intracluster correlation coefficient, ρ. A variance correction factor derived from ρ is then applied to the variance estimator in the standard tests of homogeneity of the odds ratio. The proposed tests are an application of the variance adjustment method commonly used in correlated data analysis and are shown to maintain the nominal significance level in a simulation study.
