This paper deals with improved estimation of a gamma shape parameter from a decision-theoretic point of view. First we study the second-order properties of three estimators – (i) the maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE), (ii) a bias corrected version of the MLE, and (iii) an improved version (in terms of mean squared error) of the MLE. It is shown that all the three estimators mentioned above are second-order inadmissible. Next, we obtain superior estimators which are second order better than the above three estimators. Simulation results are provided to study the relative risk improvement of each improved estimator over the MLE.  相似文献

This paper develops alternatives to maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) for logistic regression models and compares the mean squared error (MSE) of the estimators. The MLE for the vector of underlying success probabilities has low MSE only when the true probabilities are extreme (i.e., near 0 or 1). Extreme probabilities correspond to logistic regression parameter vectors which are large in norm. A competing “restricted” MLE and an empirical version of it are suggested as estimators with better performance than the MLE for central probabilities. An approximate EM-algorithm for estimating the restriction is described. As in the case of normal theory ridge estimators, the proposed estimators are shown to be formally derivable by Bayes and empirical Bayes arguments. The small sample operating characteristics of the proposed estimators are compared to the MLE via a simulation study; both the estimation of individual probabilities and of logistic parameters are considered.  相似文献

Recent small sample studies of estimators for the shape parameter a of the negative binomial distribution (NBD) tend to indicate that the choice of estimator can be reduced to a choice between the method of moments estimator, maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), maximum quasi-likelihood estimator and the conditional likelihood estimator (CLE). In this paper the results of a comprehensive simulation study are reported to assist with the choice from these four estimators. The study includes a traditional procedure for assessing estimators for the shape parameter of the NBD and in addition introduces an alternative assessment procedure. Based on the traditional approach the CLE is considered to perform the best overall for the range of parameter values and sample sizes considered. The alternative assessment procedure indicates that the MLE is the preferred estimator.  相似文献

This paper concludes our comprehensive study on point estimation of model parameters of a gamma distribution from a second-order decision theoretic point of view. It should be noted that efficient estimation of gamma model parameters for samples ‘not large’ is a challenging task since the exact sampling distributions of the maximum likelihood estimators and its variants are not known. Estimation of a gamma scale parameter has received less attention from the earlier researchers compared to shape parameter estimation. What we have observed here is that improved estimation of the shape parameter does not necessarily lead to improved scale estimation if a natural moment condition (which is also the maximum likelihood restriction) is satisfied. Therefore, this work deals with the gamma scale parameter estimation as a separate new problem, not as a by-product of the shape parameter estimation, and studies several estimators in terms of second-order risk.  相似文献

Abstract

Estimation of quantiles from two normal populations is considered under the assumption of common mean and ordered variances. Several new estimators have been proposed using certain estimators of the common mean, including the plug-in type restricted MLE. A sufficient condition for improving equivariant estimators is proved and as a result improved estimators are derived. The percentage of risk improvements for each of the improved estimators have been computed numerically, which are quite significant. All the improved estimators have been compared numerically using Monte-Carlo simulation method. Finally, recommendations have been made for the use of estimators in practice.  相似文献

Compared to Type-II censoring, multiply Type-II censoring is a more general, yet mathematically and numerically much more complicated censoring scheme. For multiply Type II censored data from a two-parameter Weibull distribution, we propose several estimators, including MLE, approximate MLE, and estimators corresponding to the BLUE and BLIE from estimating parameters in extreme-value distribution. An approximately unbiased estimator for the shape parameter is also proposed which has the smallest MSE. Numerical examples show that this estimator is the best in terms of bias and MSE. Numerical examples also show that the approximate MLE which admits a closed form is better for estimating the scale parameter.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce mixed Liu estimator (MLE) for the vector of parameters in linear measurement error models by unifying the sample and the prior information. The MLE is a generalization of the mixed estimator (ME) and Liu estimator (LE). In particular, asymptotic normality properties of the estimators are discussed, and the performance of the MLE over the LE and ME are compared based on mean squared error matrix (MSEM). Finally, a Monte Carlo simulation and a numerical example are also presented for analysis.

Inference about reliability parameter with gamma strength and stress   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The statistical inference about the reliability parameter R involving independent gamma stress and strength is considered. Assuming the two shape parameters are known arbitrary real numbers, the UMVUE of R is obtained. The performances of the UMVUE and the MLE are compared numerically based on extensive Monte Carlo simulation. Simulation studies indicate that the performance of the two estimators are about the same. The MLE is preferred due to its computational simplicity.  相似文献

We investigate several estimators of the negative binomial (NB) dispersion parameter for highly stratified count data for which the statistical model has a separate mean parameter for each stratum. If the number of samples per stratum is small then the model is highly parameterized and the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the NB dispersion parameter can be biased and inefficient. Some of the estimators we investigate include adjustments for the number of mean parameters to reduce bias. We extend other estimators that were developed for the iid case, to reduce bias when there are many mean parameters. We demonstrate using simulations that an adjusted double extended quasi-likelihood estimator we proposed gives much improved estimates compared to the MLE. Adjusted extended quasi-likelihood and adjusted maximum likelihood estimators also give much-improved results. We illustrate the various estimators with stratified random bottom trawl survey data for cod (Gadus morhua) off the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada.  相似文献

The problem of estimation of a parameter of interest in the presence of a nuisance parameter, which is either location or scale, is considered. Three estimators are taken into account: usual maximum likelihood (ML) estimator, maximum integrated likelihood estimator and the bias-corrected ML estimator. General results on comparison of these estimators w.r.t. the second-order risk based on the mean-squared error are obtained. Possible improvements of basic estimators via the notion of admissibility and methodology given in Ghosh and Sinha [A necessary and sufficient condition for second order admissibility with applications to Berkson's bioassay problem. Ann Stat. 1981;9(6):1334–1338] are considered. In the recent paper by Tanaka et al. [On improved estimation of a gamma shape parameter. Statistics. 2014; doi:10.1080/02331888.2014.915842], this problem was considered for estimating the shape parameter of gamma distribution. Here, we perform more accurate comparison of estimators for this case as well as for some other cases.  相似文献

Estimation of Weibull distribution shape and scale parameters is accomplished through use of symmetrically located percentiles from a sample. The process requires algebraic solution of two equations derived from the cumulative distribution function. Three alternatives examined are compared for precision and variability with maximum likelihood (MLE) and least squares (LS) estimators. The best percentile estimator (using the 10th and 90th) is inferior to MLE in variability and to one least squares estimator in accuracy and variability to a small degree. However, application of a correction factor related to sample size improves the percentile estimator substantially, making it more accurate than LS.  相似文献

This paper examines two different classes of estimates for a population proportion based on an unbalanced rank set sample. Specifically, the two classes correspond to the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and a weighted average (WA) estimate. Both estimators are asymptotically normal, so standard inference procedures can still be implemented. Furthermore, these results can be used to develop optimal allocation schemes for both estimators. The performances of the optimal estimators are studied in terms of both finite sample and asymptotic relative efficiency. In general, the MLE is more efficient than the WA estimate. Lastly, the practicality of the optimal sampling plans is addressed and illustrated via an example.  相似文献

Moving Extremes Ranked Set Sampling (MERSS) is a useful modification of Ranked Set Sampling (RSS). Unlike RSS, MERSS allows for an increase of set size without introducing too much ranking error. The method is considered parametrically under exponential distribution. Maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), and a modified MLE are considered and their properties are studied. The method is studied under both perfect and imperfect ranking (with error in ranking). It appears that these estimators can be real competitors to the MLE using the usual simple random sampling (SRS).  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Estimation of common location parameter of two exponential populations is considered when the scale parameters are ordered using type-II censored samples. A general inadmissibility result is proved which helps in deriving improved estimators. Further, a class of estimators dominating the MLE has been derived by an application of integrated expression of risk difference (IERD) approach of Kubokawa. A discussion regarding extending the results to a general k( ? 2) populations has been done. Finally, all the proposed estimators are compared through simulation.  相似文献

The maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is asymptotically efficient for most parametric models under standard regularity conditions, but it has very poor robustness properties. On the other hand some of the minimum disparity estimators like the minimum Hellinger distance estimator (MHDE) have strong robustness features but their small sample efficiency at the model turns out to be very poor compared to the MLE. Methods based on the minimization of some combined disparities can substantially improve their small sample performances without affecting their robustness properties (Park et al., 1995). All studies involving the combined disparity have so far been empirical, and there are no results on the asymptotic properties of these estimators. In view of the usefulness of these procedures this is a major gap in theory, which we try to fill through the present work. Some illustrations of the performance of the estimators and the corresponding tests are also provided.  相似文献

Estimation of two normal means with an order restriction is considered when a covariance matrix is known. It is shown that restricted maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) stochastically dominates both estimators proposed by Hwang and Peddada [Confidence interval estimation subject to order restrictions. Ann Statist. 1994;22(1):67–93] and Peddada et al. [Estimation of order-restricted means from correlated data. Biometrika. 2005;92:703–715]. The estimators are also compared under the Pitman nearness criterion and it is shown that the MLE is closer to ordered means than the other two estimators. Estimation of linear functions of ordered means is also considered and a necessary and sufficient condition on the coefficients is given for the MLE to dominate the other estimators in terms of mean squared error.  相似文献

This paper deals with the maximum likelihood estimation of parameters for a doubly truncated normal distribution when the truncation points are known. We prove, in this case, that the MLEs are nonexistent (become infinite) with positive probability. For estimators that exist with probability one, the class of Bayes modal estimators or modified maximum likelihood estimators is explored. Another useful estimating procedure, called mixed estimation, is proposed. Simulations compare the behavior of the MLEs, the modified MLEs, and the mixed estimators which reveal that the MLE, in addition to being nonexistent with positive probability, behaves poorly near the upper boundary of the interval of its existence. The modified MLEs and the mixed estimators are seen to be remarkably better than the MLE  相似文献

Double censoring often occurs in registry studies when left censoring is present in addition to right censoring. In this work, we examine estimation of Aalen's nonparametric regression coefficients based on doubly censored data. We propose two estimation techniques. The first type of estimators, including ordinary least squared (OLS) estimator and weighted least squared (WLS) estimators, are obtained using martingale arguments. The second type of estimator, the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), is obtained via expectation-maximization (EM) algorithms that treat the survival times of left censored observations as missing. Asymptotic properties, including the uniform consistency and weak convergence, are established for the MLE. Simulation results demonstrate that the MLE is more efficient than the OLS and WLS estimators.  相似文献
