This annotated bibliography on undergraduate research presents seventeen publications from serials in the library literature covering 1980 to June 2006. These publications are significant contributions from prominent authors that converge at a growing body of library literature on undergraduate research. With a focus on research behaviors, the annotated bibliography has four dimensions: a theoretical framework, main findings of undergraduate research behaviors, relations between faculty and undergraduate research, and a flip side of undergraduate behaviors. Hopefully, this annotated bibliography will familiarize readers with attitudes towards and practices in undergraduate research and a continuation of the research in untouched aspects.  相似文献

This bibliography supplements the list given by Preece (1975) of combinatorial and statistical publications on (a) designs for comparative experiments in three space dimensions, and (b) other related designs. The reader is referred to the original bibliography for details of the scope of the listing.
This supplementary bibliography includes a few publications overlooked previously, as well as recent additions to the literature.

Abstract

This study surveys the development of collections of foreign-language ethnic newspapers in American libraries and archives since the 1960s. Relying on a review of historical and media studies scholarship as well as library and archival science literature, the article aims to identify the main sources of non-English ethnic newspapers available in the United States and to examine the difficulties such newspapers present for libraries, from older print publications to today’s born-digital media, regarding collection development, bibliographic control, and preservation. After a brief historical survey of the foreign-language ethnic press in the United States, the article analyzes the development of library collections since the 1960s as well as libraries’ efforts to preserve them and improve access to them. It then evaluates the state of digitization and online availability of foreign-language ethnic newspapers and initiates a reflection on the need to collect current print and digital ethnic newspapers.  相似文献

This paper starts with an itroduction which gives definitions of order statistics,makes a clear distinction between order statistics and rank statistics, and gives an overview of the problems in which methods based on order statstics are useful.The following sections deal with the history and role of order sta¬tistics in selected areas: central tendency, dispersion, and regression; treatment of outliers and robust estimation; maximum likelihood estimators; best linear unbiased estimators; extreme-values; multiple comparisons and studentized range. The last two sections discuss a basic coverage property and some of its conse¬quences and describe the author's chronological annotated bibliography of order statistics. ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is to determine the collaborative activities of Asian library and information science (LIS) researchers through bibliometric, social network analysis at the author, institution, and country levels of the LIS publications produced by Asian researchers. For the study, research articles were derived from the 1994–2013 Web of Science (WoS) archives. Coauthor analysis software was used to analyze author contributions on the New Modified Author Activity Index (NMAAI1, 2, 3)—a measurement tool to evaluate author research activities. Results reveal (a) that LIS “institutions collaboration pattern” outcomes did not yield strong collaboration with Asian countries or regions, (b) intracontinent and intercontinent collaboration was less harmonious on institutional and author levels, and (c) interpretation through NMAAI1,2,3 revealed that Asian countries did not produce sufficient collaborative LIS publications. Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Iran, Israel, and Turkey have been producing ample LIS papers, but the United States and United Kingdom emerged as leaders. This work provides a holistic view of Asian LIS development and emphasizes individual levels of collaboration, finding that most influential authors serve on coauthor networks, which differentiates this study from previous studies in the LIS field. There is immense need to develop liaisons, sign memoranda of understanding (MOUs), and participate in combined research plans and short-term research exchange programs.  相似文献

Good interdisciplinary research requires genuine team work and appreciation of the different skills contributed by the partners involved. By the nature of our subject, statisticians are often very important contributors to this kind of research. This short note offers some brief reflection on the issues of communication which are usually present. The skills required and the need to promote these in undergraduate education and beyond have been well documented in the literature but are further emphasised here.  相似文献

Abstract

The concept and practice of remote work in library technical services is not new, but the scale and speed of the transition to remote work for many libraries due to the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented. This column provides an overview of pre-pandemic literature on remote work in library technical services and briefly examines the history, planning, case studies, technology and equity concerns, challenges, and potential benefits of remote work. Initial connections are drawn between existing literature and the impact of the pandemic on remote work, and future directions for research and discussion are offered.  相似文献

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), statistical scientists develop solutions for a variety of national security challenges through scientific excellence, typically as members of interdisciplinary teams. At LANL, mentoring is actively encouraged and practiced to develop statistical skills and positive career-building behaviors. Mentoring activities targeted at different career phases from student to junior staff are an important catalyst for both short and long term career development. This article discusses mentoring strategies for undergraduate and graduate students through internships as well as for postdoctoral research associates and junior staff. Topics addressed include project selection, progress, and outcome; intellectual and social activities that complement the student internship experience; key skills/knowledge not typically obtained in academic training; and the impact of such internships on students’ careers. Experiences and strategies from a number of successful mentorships are presented. Feedback from former mentees obtained via a questionnaire is incorporated. These responses address some of the benefits the respondents received from mentoring, helpful contributions and advice from their mentors, key skills learned, and how mentoring impacted their later careers.  相似文献

We present some comments on Latin squares and on Graeco-Latin squares, with special emphasis on their use in statistics and in a historical context. We also comment on the Knut Vik square, the knight’s move design and the knight’s tour, as well as the Magic Card Puzzle. We consider the well-known 36 officers problem studied by Euler (Verhandelingen uitgegeven door het zeeuwsch Genootschap der Wetenschappen te Vlissingen, vol. 9 (Middleburg 1782), pp. 85–239, 1779/1782), and give two examples of diagonal Latin squares of order 6 due, respectively, to Abbé François-Guillaume Poignard (Chez Guillaume Fricx, Imprimeur &; libraire ruë Bergestract, à l’enseigne des quatre Evangelistes, Bruxelles [4] 79 pp. (p. 71 folded), 1704) and József Dénes (J Lond Math Soc Ser 2, 6(4):679–689, 1970). Loddon Mallee Integrated Cancer Service plays a key role in planning the delivery of cancer services in the Loddon Mallee Region of Victoria, Australia. Forecasting the incidence of cancer is an important part of planning for these services. This article is written from an industry perspective. We describe the context of our work, review the literature on forecasting the incidence of cancer, discuss contemporary approaches, describe our experience with forecasting models, and list issues associated with applying these models. An extensive bibliography illustrates the world-wide interest in this forecasting problem. We hope that it is useful to researchers.  相似文献

Established in 1994 through the amalgamation of several teacher training colleges, The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) is the major multidisciplinary teacher education provider in the Hong Kong SAR. Despite this, the Institute does not have a particularly high research profile when compared with its peer institutions in Hong Kong and around the world. Its research publishing achieves modest exposure and impact in international educational research literature. The Institute has a goal to attain the title of a “university of education” and has identified an improvement in its research output and profile as critical to achieving this. In this context the HKIEd Library embarked on the redevelopment of its institutional repository, changing its direction from being an archive of institutional publications to one which brought together and offered access to the sum total of published output of the Institute since its foundation, in a deliberate effort to promote Institute research. This paper explores the particular approach taken by the Library to the development of the institutional repository, how the repository contributes directly to and aligns with the research strategies of the Institute, and the impact the Repository has had so far on improving the profile of research at HKIEd.  相似文献

Abstract

This study examines what can be learned about a library’s electronic social work journal collection from usage statistics, survey data, faculty publications, and an examination of open access (OA) availability. A collections analysis was completed using data from two sources: a custom report by 1Science and results of a faculty survey on top journals for teaching. After creating a list of journals important to social work, top journals were identified by article downloads, faculty-authored publications, and references to faculty-authored papers. A publications analysis using faculty websites and author searches in Web of Science was also completed, to provide local, contextual data. SHERPA/RoMEO was used to determine the journals’ OA level and archiving policy. Library coverage for the journals was also included in the analysis. Results show that the McGill University Library has access to almost all of the journals identified as important to social work. Nearly one-third of publications authored by the McGill University School of Social Work since 2006 are OA, and more than half of the faculty in the school have at least one article published in an OA journal. While this is a good start for librarians who want to help faculty and students understand OA publishing and access, there is room for outreach in this area. While these results will aid librarians supporting faculty, students, and practitioners in the field of social work, a secondary aim of the study is to demonstrate a method that can be used by librarians undertaking similar analyses in other fields.  相似文献

立足近两年中国出版行业转企改制后的现状,以图书出版流程四维度为解释变量,知识螺旋为中介变量,构建了影响员工创新行为的结构方程模型,基于中国56家少儿出版社279份问卷调查的样本数据进行实证分析。研究发现:首先,图书流程中的选题策划、技术选择和营销服务分别显著影响员工创新行为,编校质量对员工创新行为的影响作用不显著;其次,选题策划、编校质量和技术选择分别显著影响知识螺旋,营销服务对知识螺旋的影响作用不显著;最后,知识螺旋在选题策划与员工创新行为间具有部分中介效应,知识螺旋在技术选择与员工创新行为间具有部分中介效应,知识螺旋在编校质量与员工创新行为间具有完全中介效应,知识螺旋在营销服务与员工创新行为间的中介效应不显著。  相似文献

Abstract

The authors discuss the development of a related set of institutional repositories among several liberal arts college libraries. Contrary to the usual focus on faculty publications, the primary goal of these repositories is the promotion of student work, especially undergraduate theses. Discussion of issues concerning selection of materials and archival policies is included along with practical considerations of workflows and reflections on the advantages and disadvantages of the particular software platform (Digital Commons). Marketing the repository and the subsequent addition of other materials, including e-journals, are discussed in light of ambiguity about its purposes among campus faculty and students.  相似文献
