Model and design correspondence in finite population sampling

A correspondence rule is suggested for the choice of a sampling design when prior knowledge concerning a finite population is available. Designs satisfying the correspondence rule are discussed in the case of random permutations models. A general optimality theorem is given for strategies under such models. Approximate correspondences satisfied by systematic sampling and πps sampling are also indicated.

On uniform approximation of Poisson variates by normal ones

In this paper the accuracy of the normal approximation to the Poisson is treated from the viewpoint of direct approximation of Poisson variables by normal ones. The conclusions that are derived on the accuracy of this approximation lead (among others) to very useful results on confidence limits for the mean of a linear combination of independent Poisson variables; these latter are employed in precise determination of the composition of a mixture of radioactive isotopes by means of a scintillation counter.     

ON LABOR'S RIGHT TO STRIKE

This paper first shows that, under certain conditions, strikes benefit capital at the expense of union labor in the aggregate. It is then argued that observed variations in strikes and labor's right to strike are largely explainable by variations in the profitability of strikes to capital and not explainable by popular alternative hypotheses purporting to explain the existence of strikes. Finally, an explanation is offered for the persistence of labor's right to strike over time and across various political systems.     

Remembering the lizard: reconstructing sexuality in the rooms of narcotics anonymous

The crack epidemic was devastating to poor American communities in part because of the destruction wrought by the system of exchanging sex for drugs, which was a key feature of the crack-use culture. Sex-for-drugs exchanges were often conducted under unsafe circumstances and were linked to the spread of AIDS and other STDs, as well as unplanned pregnancies. The existence of this alternative system of sexual relationships threatened the economic viability of established commercial sex work and undermined the status and power of women. Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings helped men and women recover from crack addiction through a well-described 12-step process. Described as the rooms, these time- and space-specific encounters helped people become sober in the context of neighborhoods that were centers of the drug trade. Because of the key role of sex in the crack culture, transformation of sexual relationships was essential to establishing and maintaining sobriety. The manner in which the rooms of NA influence the sexuality and lifeworld of addicted people is explored using Barker's theory of ecological psychology.
