Performance Evaluation of Different Tests for Location Parameters

In this article, our objective is to evaluate the performance of different tests which are used to compare the equality of more than two location parameters. We have considered six tests (including some commonly used) in this study, one of which is parametric and the others are nonparametric. Performance of these tests are compared under different symmetric, skewed and contaminated probability distributions that include Normal, Cauchy, Uniform, Laplace, Lognormal, Exponential, Weibull, Gamma, t, Chi-square, Half Normal, Mixed Weibull, and Mixed Normal. Performances of these tests are measured in terms of power. We have suggested appropriate tests which may perform better under different situations. It is expected that researchers will find these results useful in decision making.     

Designs balanced for neighbor effects in circular blocks of size six

The performance of a treatment is affected by the treatments applied to its adjacent plots, especially in the experiments of agriculture, horticulture, forestry, serology and industry. Neighbor designs ensure that treatment comparisons are least affected by neighbor effects, therefore, this is a rich field of investigation in statistics and in combinatorics. In this article, several series of neighbor balanced designs are considered in circular blocks of six units.

Construction of Balanced Incomplete Block Designs Using Cyclic Shifts

Balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs) play important role in design of experiments, especially in field experiments. These designs ensure that treatments are compared with equal precision. Several methods are available in the literature to construct BIBDs but in this article some infinite series of these designs are presented by method of cyclic shifts. This method expresses some standard properties of a design just through examining the sets of shifts rather than studying the whole design.     

Child protection: Principles and applications

The protection of children worldwide requires a framework and criteria agreed upon by the international community. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the World Summit for Children have gone some way in setting out agreed minimum standards for children's survival, health and education and the minimum protection required by children against abuse, exploitation and neglect in war, at work or in the home. These principles need to be applied at a national as well as an international level. The current situation in Asian countries is presented and discussed.     

Computer-Generated Neighbor Designs

Neighbor designs are useful to remove the neighbor effects. In this article, an algorithm is developed and is coded in Visual C + +to generate the initial block for possible first, second,…, and all order neighbor designs. To get the required design, a block (0, 1, 2,…, k ? 1) is then augmented with (v ? 1) blocks obtained by developing the initial block cyclically mod (v ? 1).     

Multilevel Augmented Pairs Second-Order Response Surface Designs and Their Robustness to Missing Data

Missing observations can occur even in a well-planned experiment. The effect of missing observations can be much more serious when the design is saturated or near saturated. The levels of factor settings that make a design more robust to missing observations are of great importance in the sense that the loss for missing observations becomes minimum. In this study, new augmented pairs minimax loss designs are constructed, which are more robust to one missing design point than the augmented pairs designs presented by Morris (2000 Morris , M. D. New designs are compared with augmented pairs designs, central composite designs, and small composite designs under generalized scaled standard deviations. The model used is also studied for the regression coefficient estimates.     

Working Together for Better Social Work Education

This article looks at the development of user involvement in social work education at national policy level. It is written by a group of service users who are involved in Shaping Our Lives, the national independent user controlled organisation and network. The article looks at the background of user involvement in social work education and the work that Shaping Our Lives has done in the past. The new social work qualification requires user involvement in all its aspects and stages. The results so far have been patchy. Service users have made it increasingly clear that they want to be more directly involved in developing this policy alongside other stakeholders. They are particularly keen that some of the funding available goes to user controlled organisations to help develop service users' capacity to get involved and to ensure diverse involvement. The article looks at problems there have been in taking this goal forward and a positive initiative that has developed to help make it happen, led by service users, working collaboratively with other stakeholders.     

Time truncated acceptance sampling plans for generalized exponential distribution

Acceptance sampling plans for generalized exponential distribution when the lifetime experiment is truncated at a pre-determined time are provided in this article. The tables are provided for the minimum sample size required to ensure a certain median life of the experimental unit when the shape parameter is two. The operating characteristic function values of the sampling plans and the associated producer's risks are also presented. It is shown that the tables presented here can be used if instead of median life, other percentile life is chosen as the criterion or if the shape parameter is not two. Examples are provided for illustrative purposes.
