Children conducting research and engaging in ‘adult’ domains such as urban planning challenge perceptions of children as merely ‘adult becomings’ — perceptions which, along with lack of pathways for participation, have largely excluded children from effective participation in the public realm. This paper considers two urban participatory projects in Aotearoa/New Zealand: in the first, children (10–13 years) researched peer perceptions of Auckland city life; in the second, they were consulted by Auckland Council on the redevelopment of a city square. Increasing interdependencies and vulnerabilities in the global economy appear to require a re-examination of our neoclassical economic individualism. The philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead provides a fundamentally new framework for a view of reality based on organic and social models rather than on mechanistic and individualistic ones. This article summarizes Whitehead's central concepts and explores the ethical implications of his social conception of reality for economic behavior. It also draws ecological implications from his thought and makes suggestions for management behavior. Children's Centres are the latest in a line of initiatives designed to provide neighbourhood‐based family support. These are part of a spectrum of preventive services from Universalist (primary prevention) to permanence and rehabilitative work (quaternary). High levels of need confronted by tertiary Child Care Social Work and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, mean that the contribution of these centres at secondary level and responsiveness to its higher‐level needs, have become particularly important. At the same time, the involvement and perspectives of service users have become equally important in the evaluation and development of centres. Users, though, can help create the culture and expectations in centres just through the processes of interaction developed over time. However, although users have evaluated services for their openness, we know little about the part played by service users themselves – particularly through their informal interactions and culture – in the responsiveness of centres to higher‐need families for whom secondary level prevention is appropriate. This paper focuses on the part played by service users as gatekeepers showing they can play an important, and sometimes limiting, part in the responsiveness of centres. The theoretical and practical implications of this for prevention are discussed. 相似文献

The accelerated ownership and usage of smartphones and social media presents multiple issues for educators. There is a relationship between smartphones and (a) academic achievement, (b) engagement, and (c) mental health. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the impact of smartphones and social media on students and how curriculum can best prepare youth for democratic citizenship. The case studies included in this review span beyond the United States due to the insightful research that has been conducted in various locations across the globe. When reviewing the literature, a few themes emerged. First, students who struggle the most academically are the ones who benefit most from the absence of a smartphone. Second, students of color are spending more time on social media and due to the increased exposure to racial discrimination online, academic motivation is decreasing for many of these students. Third, many researchers encourage schools to develop policies to limit smartphone use in the classroom. Finally, it is evident that the social studies curriculum needs to be expanded to include digital citizenship, media literacy, and the potential negative impact of smartphones and social media on students. 相似文献
