The results of a practice-based research project are described, in which parents of students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) participated in a parent education presentation aimed at increasing parental self-efficacy. Results indicated that parents who participated did increase both their parental self-efficacy in regard to influencing their child’s school-related performance and helping their child succeed in school. Qualitatively, parents also reported the parent education was helpful and that they had tried suggested interventions at home. Though a small-scale pilot project, results are promising and suggest parent education is a feasible technique school districts can use to reach parents of students with EBD. The unsuccessful implementation of health innovations occurs frequently, leading to missed opportunities where improvements could have been made on various aspects of a health system. The purpose of this study is to identify, assess and synthesise the facilitators and barriers to sustainably implementing evidence-based health innovations in a low- and middle-income country (LMIC) context. To identify the LMIC specific facilitators and barriers, a systematic literature review was conducted. 79 studies were analysed, and the implementation barriers and facilitators identified in each study were extracted. The extracted barriers and facilitators were categorised and synthesized into one of seven concepts: context, innovation, relations and networks, institutions, knowledge, actors or resources. There were no substantial variations between the frequency that each concept was identified as a facilitator or barrier to implementation. However, resources, which includes time, human, financial and physical resources, was the most frequently mentioned concept; emphasising the need to focus on the resource situation in LMICs. This study contributes to the growing literature that aims to inform health system planners and evaluators in LMICs on effectively and sustainably implementing evidence-based health innovations. 相似文献

Little is understood about how experiencing cancer and aging together can disrupt people's socio-personal worlds and lead to existential questions about identity, life ambiguity, and death. Toward this end, we interpreted the metaphors that three aging men with cancer used in a focus group to describe their existential concerns. We also considered how two dominant cultural discourses around cancer and aging, generally referred to as discourses of “progress” and “decline”, figured into the participants' meanings. Finally, we compared the men's attitudes toward cancer and aging to dominant ideas about how men respond to these life events. Through interpretative phenomenological analysis, informed by critical phenomenology, we came to three conclusions. First, the men's interpretations of cancer and aging shared similar existential themes of tragedy and transcendence. Second, these existential concerns were informed by dominant discourses of cancer and aging, in that they followed the culturally constructed trajectories of decline and progress, respectively. The men's metaphors point to a negotiation of these two discourses. A third and related point is that the men predominantly contradicted gendered assumptions about dealing with life adversity but in some ways repeated them. This research indicates that people interpret cancer and aging in somewhat shared ways, via dominant cultural discourses, but also in individual ways depending on personal life histories. As discourses and life histories seem to influence how people make sense of aging life with cancer, it may be useful to be aware of these contexts when providing psycho-social care to aging cancer patients. 相似文献

There is a growing interest in quality of life as an integrated approach to addressing key social, environmental and economic
determinants of health. The University of Saskatchewan’s Community-University Institute for Social Research, funded by the
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (grant #410-2004-0669) has examined the process and results of a multi-stakeholder
approach to the ongoing sustainability of Saskatoon, Canada as a healthy city with an improving and a more equitably distributed
quality of life. Using quantitative and qualitative analysis, together with GIS technology, this research has examined the
quality of life across three locales in Saskatoon—representing Low, Middle and High socio-economic status in both 2001 and
2004. The participatory action research approach used in this work ensures the value of the outputs to the stakeholders. Given
the strong recognition of the importance of interfacing policy, research and community, and the growing impatience with the
limited application of research findings to social and health practices and policies, this project has undertaken four major
knowledge translation/transfer strategies, above and beyond the traditional academic channels: (1) engagement of local media
on a consistent basis, (2) implementing community policy forums to ensure continued community readiness and uptake, (3) facilitation
of and successful functioning of a steering committee, and (4) employment of an action researcher to operate as a policy entrepreneur.
This paper will review and discuss each of these strategies and outline the evaluative research being done to document the
success of these strategies.

This paper provides a study of HRM practices for a new category of expatriates - “Yopatriates” - who we note as young, highly qualified and mobile, Generation Y (Gen Y) knowledge workers. In contrast to traditional expatriates, Yopatriates typify non-traditional forms of expatriation wherein they seek short-term international assignments to suit their individual (internal, rather than organisational or external) career orientations of learning and travel. We study this group using a case study analysis of a large Indian Multi National Corporation (MNC) delivering global information technology (IT) and business process offshoring (BPO) services. Our study presents the HRM practices adopted to manage both expatriates as well as Yopatriates at the case organisation being studied within an India setting. We further evaluate the extent to which internal HR practices of Yopatriates were characterised, by a desire to emulate or adopt what were regarded as global ‘HR best practices’. Our distinctive contribution lies in extending the literature by developing a distinctive theoretical category of non-traditional expatriates that (1) highlights a need for a different set of HRM practices; and (2) extends the theory of cultural adjustment in the context of Yopatriates. Evidence suggests that these practices were complementary and at the same time contradictory to ‘indigenous’ localised practices during the period of research and complied with two of the four arguments we make in our model. 相似文献

This study investigates the joint effect of corporate ownership and board of directors' diversity configurations on the success of strategic merger and acquisition (M&A) decisions. Board diversity is defined as the extent to which its demographic diversity as measured by the culture, nationality, gender and experience of its directors complements its statutory diversity. A theoretical framework linking ownership, board diversity and M&A strategic decision making is proposed and tested. Based on a sample of 289 M&A decisions undertaken by Canadian firms over the period 2000–2007, demographic diversity is found to have a clear and non‐linear effect on M&A performance while statutory diversity is of limited influence. Ownership is found to influence the effect of diversity, making the relation finer and more precise. This has practical implications. First, statutory diversity is not sufficient for well‐performing boards. Also, ownership is an important factor. The most advocated board diversity aimed at insuring the board's independence is not valid across all ownership configurations. From a public policy perspective, results provide support for the principles‐based approach in governance. Governance regimes should encourage the search for a balance between board diversity and the need for cohesion that best serves the firm's purpose and obligations. 相似文献

The analysis of residuals may reveal various functional forms suitable for the regression model. In this paper, we investigate some selection criteria for selecting important regression variables. In doing so, we use statistical selection and ranking procedures. Thus, we derive an appropriate criterion to measure the influence and bias for the reduced models. We show that the reduced models are based on some noncentrality parameters which provide a measure of goodness of fit for the fitted models. In this paper, we also discuss the relationships of influence diagnostics and the statistic proposed earlier by Gupta and Huang (J. Statist. Plann. Inference 20 (1988) 155–167). Ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are popular tools for modeling complicated dynamic systems in many areas. When multiple replicates of measurements are available for the dynamic process, it is of great interest to estimate mixed-effects in the ODE model for the process. We propose a semiparametric method to estimate mixed-effects ODE models. Rather than using the ODE numeric solution directly, which requires providing initial conditions, this method estimates a spline function to approximate the dynamic process using smoothing splines. A roughness penalty term is defined using the ODEs, which measures the fidelity of the spline function to the ODEs. The smoothing parameter, which controls the trade-off between fitting the data and maintaining fidelity to the ODEs, can be specified by users or selected objectively by generalized cross validation. The spline coefficients, the ODE random effects, and the ODE fixed effects are estimated in three nested levels of optimization. Two simulation studies show that the proposed method obtains good estimates for mixed-effects ODE models. The semiparametric method is demonstrated with an application of a pharmacokinetic model in a study of HIV combination therapy. 相似文献
