Exact power comparison of three criteria to assess the independence between two sets of variates

Powers of the three criteria are evaluated for testing the hypothesis of the independence between a -set and a q-set of variates in a (p + q) -variate normal population. They are: (1) the likelihood ratio type criterion, Wt (2) the largest root criterion, r1, and (3) criterion of the sum of roots, V. For p= 2, Pillai and Jayachandran, and others have studied for the restricted range of the alternative hypothesis. Recently the power of the largest root was investigated in detail by Sugiyama and %%. In this paper, their power functions are compared in a wide range of the alternative hypotheses. The powers of rl and V are locally optimum, but the W shows a large power in a wide range.     

Modified tables for the selection of double sampling attribute plan indexed by aql and lql

This paper presents modified tables for the selection of double sampling plans for given Acceptable Qualtiy Level (AQL), producer’s risk (α) Limiting Quality Level (LQL), and consumer’s risk (ß) giving the minimum sum of Average Sample Numbers (ASN) at AQL and LQL under the conditions of the Poisson model for the Operating Characteristic (OC) curve.     

Nonnormality of Linear Combinations of Normal Random Variables

Hamedani and Tata (1975) showed that the bivariate normal distribution is determined uniquely by any countably infinite collection of distinct linear combinations of the variables and by no finite number of them. It is shown here that this characterization of bivariate normal distribution cannot be extended to the multivariate case. More specifically, it is shown that the multivariate normality of subsets (r < n) of the normal variables X ₁, X ₂, …, X_n together with the normality of an infinite number of linear combinations of them do not guarantee the joint normality of these variables.     

A Family of Near-Exact Distributions Based on Truncations of the Exact Distribution for the Generalized Wilks Lambda Statistic

For the case where at least two sets have an odd number of variables we do not have the exact distribution of the generalized Wilks Lambda statistic in a manageable form, adequate for manipulation. In this article, we develop a family of very accurate near-exact distributions for this statistic for the case where two or three sets have an odd number of variables. We first express the exact characteristic function of the logarithm of the statistic in the form of the characteristic function of an infinite mixture of Generalized Integer Gamma distributions. Then, based on truncations of this exact characteristic function, we obtain a family of near-exact distributions, which, by construction, match the first two exact moments. These near-exact distributions display an asymptotic behaviour for increasing number of variables involved. The corresponding cumulative distribution functions are obtained in a concise and manageable form, relatively easy to implement computationally, allowing for the computation of virtually exact quantiles. We undertake a comparative study for small sample sizes, using two proximity measures based on the Berry-Esseen bounds, to assess the performance of the near-exact distributions for different numbers of sets of variables and different numbers of variables in each set.

Inference for the Generalized Normal Laplace Distribution

The generalized normal Laplace distribution has been used in financial modeling because of its skewness and excess kurtosis. To estimate its parameters, we use a method based on minimizing the quadratic distance between the real and imaginary parts of the empirical and theoretical characteristic functions. The quadratic distance estimator (QDE) obtained is shown to be robust, consistent, and with an asymptotically normal distribution. The goodness-of-fit test statistics presented follow an asymptotic chi-square distribution. The performance of the QDE is illustrated by simulation results and an application to financial data.
