The Development and Initial Validation of the COPLAG Scale: Measuring the Concerns of Parents of Lesbians and Gays

This article discusses the development and initial validation of a scale designed to assess parents’ concerns upon their learning about their children's gay or lesbian sexual orientations. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the scale's items resulted in a three-factor solution distinguishing among parental concerns about (1) their children's physical, psychological, and social well-being, (2) themselves as parents of gay or lesbian children, and (3) being rejected by loved ones.     

Point estimation of lower quantiles based on two-sampling scheme

ABSTRACT

Consider a two-sampling scheme in which an initial sample is first taken from the underlying population and then by assuming a suitable restriction on this sample, some more data points are observed as a new restricted sample. This sampling scheme is used to do inference about the lower quantiles of the underlying distribution. The results are compared with those of simple random sampling in view of mean squared error and Pitman’s measure of closeness criteria for exponential and uniform distributions. It will be shown that the proposed sampling scheme would improve the performance of the point estimators of the lower quantiles of the population.     

Theory and methods for partitioned Gini coefficients computed on post-stratified data

The Gini coefficient is used to measure inequality in populations. However, shifts in the population distribution may affect subgroups differently. Consequently, it can be informative to examine inequality separately for these segments. Consider an independently and identically distributed sample split based on ranking and compute the Gini coefficient for each partition. These coefficients, calculated from post-stratified data, are not functions of U-statistics. Therefore, previous theoretical and methodological results cannot be applied. In this article, the asymptotic joint distribution is derived for the partitioned coefficients and bootstrap methods for inference are developed. Finally, an application to per capita income across census tracts is examined.
