Coming out within transnational families: intimate confessions under Western eyes*

This article is about ‘coming out’ and the process of disclosure of queer migrants within their transnational families. Despite debates about the decreasing relevance of coming out in contemporary western societies, we argue that the process of coming out continues to be a central mode of belonging and identity construction for queers in the context of transnational migration. Interviews with migrants from Poland, Russia and Turkey in Germany on their coming out experiences show that people rely on a variety of boundaries, i.e. gender, class and ethnicity, to construct a desired way of life. Theoretically, these insights indicate the need to reframe post-structuralist theories on power, most prominently advanced by Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault, from an intersectional perspective. The findings in this paper pinpoint to the challenges of transnational social life queer migrants are confronted with through empirical illustrations of perceptions of differences and ambiguities between immigration and emigration contexts. Furthermore, we advocate that sexuality is a crucial dimension of migration processes determining self-definition in relation to people and places, which makes their stories of coming out always also stories of ‘coming home’.     

模具钢干铣削试验及参数优化研究

为了对铣削力做进一步的研究,以及预测铣削参数的改变对铣削力变化的影响,文章建立了铣削力预测模型,引 入了PSO优化算法。试验采用正交设计方法,干式铣削SKD61模具钢;KISTLER测力仪测量铣削力;HRsoft_DW数采软 件采集试验数据,并对数据进行极差分析。研究结果表明每齿进给量是铣削参数中影响铣削力最为主要的因素。研究 验证了PSO算法对铣削参数优化问题具有有效性。     

乡村建设对精准脱贫户生计可持续的影响

基于可持续性和脆弱性双重视角,采用跨层线性模型从家庭层面和村级层面综合探讨影响精准脱贫户家庭生计可持续的关键因素,并明确了两个层级之间内在的效应联系。结果表明,贫困户脱贫退出后的生计平稳有赖于自身五类生计资本的优化及生计风险的降低,而当地公共服务、基础设施、产业发展水平和自然条件的提升皆有助于促进脱贫家庭生计资本增殖并降低风险脆弱性,从而保障脱贫效果的持久性,其中公共服务体系和基础设施建设对于精准脱贫户生计稳定作用尤为显著。因此,应将加快完善公共服务体系和基础设施建设作为未来乡村振兴和相对贫困治理的核心契合点。     

Emancipated foster youth’s experiences and perceptions of the transition to adulthood

Using a grounded theory approach, this study evaluated narratives from a sample of 170 emancipated foster youth (66.5% female; 84.6% non-white) as they reflected on their experiences between the ages of 18 and 25 across three data waves. Corbin and Strauss’ (1990) three-phase coding process revealed five overarching themes: adult values and characteristics, nature of the transition process, material needs and resources, relationship concerns, and affective experiences. Although some elements of Arnett’s (2000) model of emerging adulthood were evident in this sample of emancipated foster youth, such as individualistic qualities and instability, other core features were rarely discussed, such as self-focus and optimism, or were expressed in unique ways, such as exploration and feeling in-between. There were significant age-related changes, but not gender differences, in youth’s discussion of varied themes. These findings suggest promising avenues for intervention during the sensitive period of developmental reorganization that characterizes the transition from adolescence to young adulthood.     

Cooling the Mother Out: Revisiting and Revising Goffman's Account

This article revisits Erving Goffman's important yet neglected metaphor of “cooling the mark out.” Drawing on a study of mothers whose child has Down's syndrome, I explore the value of Goffman's work for capturing how mothers interpret their child's diagnosis as a loss and rectify this breach by constructing an acceptance of their new situation. The mothers' accounts highlight how Goffman's contentions can be enriched by acknowledging the gendered, temporal, and public character of a loss. This article, thus, can be read both as a celebration and critical revision of his theoretical contribution.

Solving the Stochastic Growth Model by Parameterizing Expectations

This article describes a method for solving the one-good stochastic growth model by parameterizing the expectations part of the stochastic Euler equation. The conditional expectation is specified as a function of the state of the system, and the parameters of that function are estimated to solve the model. The article includes a discussion of how to find the parameters of the function and determine systematically the complexity of the functional form necessary to solve the model.     

Spirituality and the Gay Latino Client

An essential element in providing social services to clients form diverse communities is an understanding of cultural norms and values. The importance of acknowledging the understanding the role of spiritual beliefs and practices in working with gay Latinos is paramount when one considers the strong influence that organized religion and alternate belief systems have had on the societal, cultural and familial lives of these clients. This article looks at the role of spirituality in working with gay Latino clients, and offers suggestions for enhanced service delivery.
