Risks Perception of Electromagnetic Fields in Taiwan: The Influence of Psychopathology and the Degree of Sensitivity to Electromagnetic Fields

Little is known about the perceived health risks of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and factors associated with risk perception in non‐Western countries. Psychological conditions and risk perception have been postulated as factors that facilitate the attribution of health complaints to environmental factors. This study investigated people's perceived risks of EMFs and other environmental sources, as well as the relationships between risk perception, psychopathology, and the degree of self‐reported sensitivity to EMFs. A total of 1,251 adults selected from a nationwide telephone interviewing system database responded to a telephone survey about the relationships between environmental sources and human health. The interview included questions assessing participants’ psychiatric conditions and the presence and degree of sensitivity to EMFs. One hundred and seventy participants were self‐identified as having sensitivity to EMFs, and 141 met the criteria for psychiatric conditions without EMF sensitivity. More than half of the survey respondents considered power lines and mobile phone base stations to affect people's health to a big extent. Higher sensitivity to EMFs, psychopathology, being female, being married, more years of education, and having a catastrophic illness had positive associations with perceived risks of EMF‐related environmental sources as well as for all environmental sources combined. We observed no moderating effect of psychopathology on the association between degree of sensitivity to EMF and risk perception. Thus, psychopathology had influence on general people's risk perception without having influence on the relationship between people's degree of sensitivity to EMF and risk perception. The plausible explanations are discussed in the text.

ABSTRACT

Public libraries have long been associated with silence and order. Historians have argued that the architecture of library buildings has served in disciplining patrons into silent reading subjects. I argue that, in light of evolving, subjective definitions of and responses to noise, changing philosophies of librarianship and library design and the proliferation of media formats and the sounds they emit, we need to consider new ways of thinking about sound in the library, not as something to be eliminated or controlled, but as something to be orchestrated, and even designed for. In order to do so, I propose that we consider first what sounds people, buildings and media make, and then use architectural design to promote their cooperative interaction.

关于民办高校法人财产权的法学思考

通过回顾民办高校财产权的相关法律规定,结合现行民办高校办学实践,认为鉴于筹资渠道的不同、学校类型及其性质的多元化,我国民办学校的财产权亦应为多元化。在承认民办高校均具有公益性的基础上,应根据纯捐资举办的非营利性民办高校、投资举办的营利性民办高校与混合举办的民办高校的不同类型,区别规定民办高校财产权的进入、运作与退出的法律保护机制。     

A Note on the Moments and Computer Generation of the Shifted Gompertz Distribution

In this paper we give a class of row-column designs with the property that the i-th row and the j-th column have precisely r treatments in common. A conjecture that such designs are quasi-factorial is disproved by showing that the designs given in this paper are not quasi-factorial. It is also shown that the designs given here are nearly optimal.     

On a life testing problem involving the two parameter exponential distribution

For a hypothesis testing problem involving the location and scale parameters of an exponential distribution, Perng (1977) proposed a test procedure based on the first r out of n observed failure times. In this paper the likelihood ratio test is determined, critical values are provided and the asymptotic null distribution is determined. An alternate test based on an F statistic is also proposed and the critical regions and power functions of the procedures are compared.     

A further note on a theorem on the difference of the generalized inverses of two nonnegative definite matrices

Andrews and Phillips (1986) gave a simplified proof for the result that established the nonnegative definiteness of the difference of the Moore-Penrose inverses of two nonoegative definite matrices, a result originally due to Milliken and Akdeniz (1977), The purpose of this paper is to offer a simple proof for a generalization of this result,     

A Copula‐Based Non‐parametric Measure of Regression Dependence

Abstract. This article presents a framework for comparing bivariate distributions according to their degree of regression dependence. We introduce the general concept of a regression dependence order (RDO). In addition, we define a new non‐parametric measure of regression dependence and study its properties. Besides being monotone in the new RDOs, the measure takes on its extreme values precisely at independence and almost sure functional dependence, respectively. A consistent non‐parametric estimator of the new measure is constructed and its asymptotic properties are investigated. Finally, the finite sample properties of the estimate are studied by means of a small simulation study.     

On the moment generating functions for integer valued random variables

Abstract

In this note, we give explicit expressions of moment generating functions for integer valued random variables in both univariate and multivariate cases, which extend the results obtained by Nadarajah and Mitov [Communications in Statistics–Theory and Methods, 32, 2003, 47–60] and more recently by Chakraborti, Jardim and Epprecht [The American Statistician, 2017], Kwong and Nadarajah [Communications in Statistics–Theory and Methods, 2017]. Some examples are also discussed.     

Detection of outliers in the exponential distribution based on prediction

In this paper, we present a test procedure to detect outliers in the one-parameter exponential distribution based on prediction. The distribution of the test statistic is obtained. The proposed test can be used to detect more than one outlier and the required percentage points can be easily determined. Furthermore, the test provides a simple procedure to detect whether a given set of data is free from outliers or spurious observations.
