Poverty in Kathmandu: What do subjective and objective economic welfare concepts suggest?

Conventional definitions suggest that the concept of economic welfare underpins poverty. Unsettled issues abound with respect to using subjective versus objective approaches, however. Using micro-level survey data, this paper explores subjective and objective concepts of economic welfare to identify characteristics of poverty in Kathmandu. While application of the subjective and objective concepts of economic welfare yields rather different characteristics, the former appears to be more comprehensive with ability to incorporate the latter in poverty measurement and analysis. This indicates that subjective assessments of households can provide a more realistic picture of poverty when used with actual income and consumption data. Although this paper does not seek to develop any particular poverty standard, it provides a useful framework for integrating subjective and objective approaches with a promise of more comprehensive poverty measurement outcomes.

企业知识吸收能力成为企业不断识别市场机遇,并快速利用外部新知识实现创新,保持和提高竞争优势的关键因素.企业知识吸收能力受诸多因素的影响,为了识别我国企业知识吸收能力的主要影响因素,通过理论分析提出了相关的理论假设,并运用调查问卷和结构方程模型方法对我国企业知识吸收能力的影响因素进行了实证研究,结果表明,企业内部人力资本水平、企业的先验知识、企业内部组织管理因素、企业R＆D活动水平及企业的外部社会资本等五个因素对我国企业知识吸收能力具有重要的影响作用,而企业吸收知识的意愿对我国企业知识吸收能力的影响作用并不显著.

A non-iterative approach to estimating parameters in a linear structural equation model

The research described herein was motivated by a study of the relationship between the performance of students in senior high schools and at universities in China. A special linear structural equation model is established, in which some parameters are known and both the responses and the covariables are measured with errors. To explore the relationship between the true responses and latent covariables and to estimate the parameters, we suggest a non-iterative estimation approach that can account for the external dependence between the true responses and latent covariables. This approach can also deal with the collinearity problem because the use of dimension-reduction techniques can remove redundant variables. Combining further with the information that some of parameters are given, we can perform estimation for the other unknown parameters. An easily implemented algorithm is provided. A simulation is carried out to provide evidence of the performance of the approach and to compare it with existing methods. The approach is applied to the education example for illustration, and it can be readily extended to more general models.     

Bayesian sequential inference for nonlinear multivariate diffusions

In this paper, we adapt recently developed simulation-based sequential algorithms to the problem concerning the Bayesian analysis of discretely observed diffusion processes. The estimation framework involves the introduction of m−1 latent data points between every pair of observations. Sequential MCMC methods are then used to sample the posterior distribution of the latent data and the model parameters on-line. The method is applied to the estimation of parameters in a simple stochastic volatility model (SV) of the U.S. short-term interest rate. We also provide a simulation study to validate our method, using synthetic data generated by the SV model with parameters calibrated to match weekly observations of the U.S. short-term interest rate.     

一类非线性方程的研究

在一类推广型非线性方程中,应用Leary-Schauder固定点定律建立了通常Sobolev空间Hs和某个权重Sobolev空间。构建一个方程初值。证明了这类推广型非线性方程的求解问题可简化为求解一个完整性连续图形上固定点j。应用Leray-Schauder定理来证明图形上所有固定点j严格在Bx[0,1]组内部存在,且在Bx[0,1]上的每一点是完全连续。其结果表明,该类推广型方程的解能收敛成初值问题的解,即得到了该类推广型非线性方程唯一光滑解。
