Prediction Regions for Bivariate Extreme Events   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper suggests using a mixture of parametric and non‐parametric methods to construct prediction regions in bivariate extreme‐value problems. The non‐parametric part of the technique is used to estimate the dependence function, or copula, and the parametric part is employed to estimate the marginal distributions. A bootstrap calibration argument is suggested for reducing coverage error. This combined approach is compared with a more parametric one, relative to which it has the advantages of being more flexible and simpler to implement. It also enjoys these features relative to predictive likelihood methods. The paper shows how to construct both compact and semi‐infinite bivariate prediction regions, and it treats the problem of predicting the value of one component conditional on the other. The methods are illustrated by application to Australian annual maximum temperature data.  相似文献

The use of Bayesian approaches in the regulated world of pharmaceutical drug development has not been without its difficulties or its critics. The recent Food and Drug Administration regulatory guidance on the use of Bayesian approaches in device submissions has mandated an investigation into the operating characteristics of Bayesian approaches and has suggested how to make adjustments in order that the proposed approaches are in a sense calibrated. In this paper, I present examples of frequentist calibration of Bayesian procedures and argue that we need not necessarily aim for perfect calibration but should be allowed to use procedures, which are well‐calibrated, a position supported by the guidance. Small area estimation has long been a popular and important research topic due to its growing demand in public and private sectors. We consider here the basic area level model, popularly known as the Fay–Herriot model. Although much of current research is predominantly focused on second order unbiased estimation of mean squared prediction errors, we concentrate on developing confidence intervals (CIs) for the small area means that are second order correct. The corrected CI can be readily implemented, because it only requires quantities that are already estimated as part of the mean squared error estimation. We extend the approach to a CI for the difference of two small area means. The findings are illustrated with a simulation study.  相似文献

Approximate conditional inference is developed for the linear calibration problem. It is shown that this problem can be transformed so that the primary parameter is an angle, the nuisance parameter is a radial distance, and the density is rotationally symmetric. Were the nuisance parameter known, exact location confidence intervals would be available by location of structural arguments. A confidence distribution is used to average out the nuisance parameter yielding an approximate confidence interval that involves a precision indicator derived from the radial distance. Some difficulties with the ordinary solution are avoided by the conditional procedure.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to investigate estimation and hypothesis testing by maximum likelihood and method of moments in functional models within the class of elliptical symmetric distributions. The main results encompass consistency and asymptotic normality of the method of moments estimators. Also, the asymptotic covariance matrix of the maximum likelihood estimator is derived, extending some existing results in elliptical distributions. A measure of asymptotic relative efficiency is reported. Wald-type statistics are considered and numerical results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the performance of estimators and tests are provided for Student-t and contaminated normal distributions. In this article, we investigated the bootstrap calibrated generalized confidence limits for process capability indices C pk for the one-way random effect model. Also, we derived Bissell's approximation formula for the lower confidence limit using Satterthwaite's method and calculated its coverage probabilities and expected values. Then we compared it with standard bootstrap (SB) method and generalized confidence interval method. The simulation results indicate that the confidence limit obtained offers satisfactory coverage probabilities. The proposed method is illustrated with the help of simulation studies and data sets.  相似文献

This investigation suggests new techniques to calibrate estimators of variance. Estimators of the variance of simple mean, ratio and regression estimators under different sampling schemes are shown to be special cases of the proposed calibration techniques. The approach has more practical use due to recent advances in programming techniques and computational speed. An empirical study has been carried out to address the properties of these proposed strategies.  相似文献

Modeling survey data often requires having the knowledge of design and weighting variables. With public-use survey data, some of these variables may not be available for confidentiality reasons. The proposed approach can be used in this situation, as long as calibrated weights and variables specifying the strata and primary sampling units are available. It gives consistent point estimation and a pivotal statistics for testing and confidence intervals. The proposed approach does not rely on with-replacement sampling, single-stage, negligible sampling fractions, or noninformative sampling. Adjustments based on design effects, eigenvalues, joint-inclusion probabilities or bootstrap, are not needed. The inclusion probabilities and auxiliary variables do not have to be known. Multistage designs with unequal selection of primary sampling units are considered. Nonresponse can be easily accommodated if the calibrated weights include reweighting adjustment for nonresponse. We use an unconditional approach, where the variables and sample are random variables. The design can be informative.  相似文献
