Feeding the Hand that Bit You: Lesbian Daughters at Mid-Life Negotiating Parental Caretaking

SUMMARY

Like other women in our culture, lesbians find parental caretaking is a gendered expectation that often falls to them. This article explores how we negotiate competing demands and integrate our parents' needs into our lives. The daughter/parent relationship may have been strained by parental homophobia, exclusion of our partner, “splitting” between our lesbian and birth family lives, and physical distance. We may recall feelings of metaphorical and physical caretaking not offered to us when we came out, when lack of parental support may have brought financial abandonment and emotional upset. Inversion of the relationship into the child as parental caretaker, fraught with mixed emotions, can bring resolution of long-held resentments and pain.     

Non-parental childcare,time pressure and the gendered division of paid work,domestic work and parental childcare

What impact does out-sourcing childcare have on the time parents spend on paid work, domestic work and childcare, and how they share these tasks between themselves? Using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Time Use Survey (TUS) 2006 we investigate the effects of formal and informal non-parental childcare on the time use of couples with children aged 0–4 years (N=348). We examine associations between non-parental care and (1) couples' combined time in paid work, domestic work and childcare, (2) parents' time separately by gender in paid work, domestic work and childcare (subdivided by activity type) and (3) parents' self-reported time pressure. Total workloads (the sum of paid work, domestic work and childcare) are neither higher nor lower when non-parental care is used, either for households combined or for each gender separately. The way time is spent, and how activities are divided by gender does differ, however. For mothers the use of any non-parental care and more hours in formal care is associated with more paid work hours, less childcare time and higher self-reported time pressure. Fathers' time is more constant, but they report higher subjective time pressure with increasing hours of formal non-parental care.

对国内近十年来单亲母亲家庭方面的研究成果进行分析发现,单亲母亲家庭研究在研究取向的客观化、研究范式的拓展和研究的本土化等方面取得了一定的进展和成绩,但也存在不足。建议今后的研究取向为：从纵向的角度对单亲母亲家庭进行行动研究,连续性、系统性地探究她们家庭结构发生改变、生活遭受重创之后复原与成长的能力和过程。

越南濒危民族语言的现状及应对濒危语言的政策

由于交际环境变小、与其它人口多的民族杂居等原因,越南的尔都、布依、仡佬、阿连和马良等少数民族的语言正在出现逐渐消亡的危机。要保留和发展这些濒危语言,笔者认为这些民族必须得到良好的普通话(即国家通用语言)教育,以便创造与各民族进行平等交际的环境。同时,要多种形式地组织这些民族的传统文化活动,为他们使用母语进行交际创造环境。

文章从语言的共同点出发,分析了母语与英语在语音、语法和词汇方面的特点,通过对两种语言之间三要素的对比分析,探索了母语的对比功能在外语教学中的作用,为英语教学提供可操作策略。     

性别分层视角下福利对美国非裔单身母亲的影响研究——以20世纪六七十年代AFDC政策为例

20世纪六七十年代,美国抚养未成年子女家庭援助计划(AFDC)的支出规模出现大幅增长,非裔单身母亲接受福利援助的程度和范围扩大,但由于族群差异而构建出“他者”概念,使非裔单身母亲在女性群体内部受到阶级制度和种族制度在另外维度上的分裂,形成福利的差异化待遇以及“福利女王”的刻板印象,其面临的社会不平等实际上是性别分层下系统性种族主义的持续存在。AFDC福利政策的发展维持了美国非裔单身母亲基本的温饱,却无法从根源上解决其贫困问题。政府需要满足其现实性别需求以及战略性别需求,改变非裔单身母亲的社会从属地位,形成经济上独立自主的女性形象。这样才能消除她们所面临的结构性障碍。
