From salons to the native reserve: reformulating the “native question” through pictorial photography in 1950s South Africa

The article provides a critical reflection on the practice of photographic salon exhibitions in the 1950s. In South Africa and abroad, there was a resurgence of photographic societies from the early 1950s that encouraged amateur photographers to create images based on a distinct visual grammar, thereby offering them not only an opportunity to display their work but to compete amongst each other. Subsequently, salon exhibitions produced work that would be judged on its pictorial rather than strict representational value thereby depoliticising the exhibition space. On the other hand, this article seeks to place this practice in the realm of racial segregation under apartheid by considering the deployment of the “black subject” in the native rural reserve in Joseph Denfield’s (1911–1967) work. Through a study of his ethnographic photographs which were exhibited internationally in this period as pictorial work, as well as his intellectualisation of his practice as native photography, it argues that the space of the salon allowed him to pose the “native question” pictorially, that is, provided a discourse through which the “native” could be “known” and ordered.

The white native speaker and inequality regimes in the private English language school

Private English language schools market the language as a tool that helps one connect with others from different cultures. Despite their promotion of English aiding in intercultural communication, these institutions may believe that only the white native speaker is the ideal teacher of the language. This valuing of the white native speaker can consequently act as an organisational inequality regime that marginalises nonwhite teachers. Using qualitative interviews with 10 nonwhite instructors working in schools in Toronto, Canada, this article investigates the ways in which these teachers experience the inequality regime of the white native speaker at work. The findings indicate that the teachers experience this inequality regime as a series of microaggressions that involve space, competence and customer desire. The article concludes with suggestions to dismantle inequality regimes in private institutions.     

语言文化因素对批判性思维能力评估的影响——基于对中英大学生的调查分析

目前已有的研究认为语言文化因素是造成中国学生批判性思维能力普遍偏低的原因之一，但由于缺乏影响程度这一重要指标，批判性思维能力差异评估的客观性和改进措施的针对性都不同程度受到影响。采用沃森-格拉泽批判性思维评价，用中英文两种版本的问卷对100名英国某大学的中国学生与英国学生进行了调查以比较他们的批判性思维能力。结果显示，中国学生在英文问卷测试中的批判性思维能力评分比英国学生低15%，而采用汉语问卷测试只低9%。这表明语言因素引起的批判性思维能力的差异占40%，因此，研究对客观评估和培养及提高中国学生的批判性思维能力有重要参考价值。     

试析文化相对主义对文学批评的意义

首先梳理了文化相对主义的基本理论，分析了文化相对主义与多元文化的关系，提出对不同文化要以平等的眼光来看待，恰当地运用文化相对主义的立场和观点理解问题、解决问题。然后以中美两国学者对沈从文作品评价为例，阐明文化相对主义对文学批评的意义，阐述了允许多种批评标准存在的文学批评观点，并从乡土文学和文学史的角度指出它对中国文学发展的重要性。     

非英语专业学生汉译英中介语石化的实证研究

中介语是用于描述介于二语学习者母语与目的语之间的一种非连续性的语言体系,中介语石化是第二语言习得区别于母语习得的一个重要特征。关于石化现象的研究已越来越受到二语习得研究领域的关注。文章分析了非英语专业学生在汉英翻译测试中出现的误差,发现学生在词法、句法和语义和语用等方面存在严重的石化现象,其根源在于母语的干扰,目的语内部结构的影响和教学过程的影响。     

以民间视角解读现代乡土文学中人物的命名

现代乡土文学继承了民间传统，把人物形象的塑造作为文本创造的核心。在人名系统这一包含着丰富民间意念的领域，主要人物的姓名称呼一般是根据创作的意图和人物在其间的活动命运安上适当的姓名，使之名副其实。地域文化心理也深刻地影响着命名的用意，不同地域的命名，显示出不同的文化价值观念和民俗模式。在人物形象构成中，诨号、绰号、雅号一类称谓习俗仍占有一席之地，准确地描摹出乡土人物的生存形状和文化处境。     

大学英语写作中的母语负迁移及教学启示

在语言学研究领域中,迁移是描述二语学习过程中母语对二语学习产生影响的术语。它在行为主义背景下产生,又随着行为主义教学理论的衰落而几乎被摒弃,之后在认知主义理论框架下重新得以发展。母语迁移既体现在对二语输入的理解过程中,又体现在二语输出的产生过程中,尤其直观地体现在学习者的写作中。分别从词汇、句法、语篇三个层面分析了大学英语写作中母语负迁移造成的各种影响,尝试着提出了解决母语负迁移的方法——正确的认知态度、广泛的英语阅读与真实的写作情境、全面的对比分析。
