The number of extant individuals within a lineage, as exemplified by counts of species numbers across genera in a higher taxonomic category, is known to be a highly skewed distribution. Because the sublineages (such as genera in a clade) themselves follow a random birth process, deriving the distribution of lineage sizes involves averaging the solutions to a birth and death process over the distribution of time intervals separating the origin of the lineages. In this article, we show that the resulting distributions can be represented by hypergeometric functions of the second kind. We also provide approximations of these distributions up to the second order, and compare these results to the asymptotic distributions and numerical approximations used in previous studies. For two limiting cases, one with a relatively high rate of lineage origin, one with a low rate, the cumulative probability densities and percentiles are compared to show that the approximations are robust over a wide range of parameters. It is proposed that the probability distributions of lineage size may have a number of relevant applications to biological problems such as the coalescence of genetic lineages and in predicting the number of species in living and extinct higher taxa, as these systems are special instances of the underlying process analyzed in this article.  相似文献

This paper derives an analytic model to study biases in infant mortality estimates by birth order and sibship size, which occur when the death of an infant tends to shorten the next birth interval and mortality risk varies among families. We find that order‐specific and sibship‐size‐specific estimates are biased by a selection for high‐risk women across birth orders, since women with higher risk will tend to have shorter intervals, and more births, within a given period of time. Sibship‐size‐specific estimates are, in addition, biased by a selection of women who have experienced deaths, even if there is no heterogeneity in risk. Numerical examples based on data from Matlab, Bangladesh, are used to illustrate the possible magnitude of these biases. The results resemble patterns of infant mortality by birth order and sibship size which are often observed empirically.  相似文献

Practitioners of statistics are too often guilty of routinely selecting a 95% confidence level in interval estimation and ignoring the sample size and the expected size of the interval. One way to balance coverage and size is to use a loss function in a decision problem. Then either the Bayes risk or usual risk (if a pivotal quantity exists) may be minimized. It is found that some non-Bayes solutions are equivalent to Bayes results based on non-informative priors. The decision theory approach is applied to the mean and standard deviation of the univariate normal model and the mean of the multivariate normal. Tables are presented for critical values, expected size, confidence and sample size.  相似文献

Adaptive control charts have been developed for improving the capability of control charts in detecting small shifts. In this article, we propose a new exponential weighted moving average control chart with variable sample size, in which the sample size is determined as an integer linear function by EWMA statistic value. The performance of the proposed VSS EWMA control chart is compared with FSS EWMA as well as traditional VSS EWMA control charts. The results show the better performance of the proposed VSS strategy respect to the traditional one and fixed sample size.  相似文献

Abstract

In many cluster randomization studies, cluster sizes are not fixed and may be highly variable. For those studies, sample size estimation assuming a constant cluster size may lead to under-powered studies. Sample size formulas have been developed to incorporate the variability in cluster size for clinical trials with continuous and binary outcomes. Count outcomes frequently occur in cluster randomized studies. In this paper, we derive a closed-form sample size formula for count outcomes accounting for the variability in cluster size. We compare the performance of the proposed method with the average cluster size method through simulation. The simulation study shows that the proposed method has a better performance with empirical powers and type I errors closer to the nominal levels.  相似文献
