How likely are utopian futures of the kind that Jeremy Corbyn has recently envisioned for the future of post-Brexit Britain? Such utopian scheming to restore the welfare state at the cost of the state gibes with the forecast of austerity from the Chancellor’s office, and pronouncements from canny observers that a post-EU Britain will need cash to support even its current programs, and therefore be forced to come to terms with the demands of banks and corporations. Corbyn’s utopianism is ridiculous unless we take into account long-term forces like the rebellion against expert rule and advocacy of democratic accountability by participatory movements. A deeper history of state, democracy, and expert rule in Brexit can highlight the underlying tensions and point to some sources of possible outcomes. 相似文献

Stepfamilies are complex family systems that warrant a specific model to guide therapy practice. Once a stepfamily has formed it's easy to overlook the lack of an attachment history that is commonly embedded in a biologically connected nuclear family. This can result in stepparents picking up parental responsibility for their stepchildren, which often may not go well. This paper highlights the need for clarity concerning the different levels of connection within a stepfamily, and the importance of avoiding ‘nuclear family‐style’ solutions and assumed attachments. This is especially important in the early stages of the relationship when everyone is adjusting to changing circumstances, which is often a time when issues of loyalty and betrayal fuel many of the actions taken. A range of family therapy techniques can be helpfully adapted to working with stepfamilies, especially as relationships with children often bring them to therapy. In particular, therapists can utilise ideas from structural family therapy to help guide the stepfamily to navigate the complexities of everyday life. 相似文献

Critical management studies have taken an interest in ‘utopian’ models of management, especially within alternative organizations. This article focuses on FC United of Manchester, a small football club with 5000 members, whose principles of inclusion, affordability, community, and friendship evoke ideas of utopianism and collectivism. About 30 fan-owned football clubs exist in the UK, each with their own raison d’être, but all discontented with the commodification of the game. Bauman’s concept of ‘liquid modernity’, in which individuals find self-realization through consumption, is used to analyse how FC United reacts to the individualization and commercialization of football. This analysis employs CMS concepts to evaluate whether FC United is a genuine alternative to standard business models, and gives an empirical and critical dimension to liquid modernity as a framework for understanding society. 相似文献

In this article, I address the Chinese project of the New Silk Road and discuss its utopian character. I analyse the origin of meanings and values inscribed in the project. In exploring the relationship between the old and new values associated with the New Silk Road, I point to continuities, but also to modifications and innovations. In conclusion, I claim that the Chinese project is a utopia which offers an alternative to the current global order. However, this Chinese utopia is underpinned by the meanings and values of the West’s utopia. 相似文献

New technology is often believed to lead to a utopia in which people can escape social constraints and traditional cultural values to (re)construct alternative gender roles in forming romantic relationships. If this utopia could be created in real life, women who live in a masculine culture might be able to transform traditional patriarchal culture. In this study, social exchange theory (SET) is adopted and interpretive research is applied to analyze the data collected through in-depth interviews to examine the utopian vision of an empowering online dating game for women, which reverses the traditional Taiwanese gender roles that men adopt in real life when they court women. Forty participants were involved in the study. The results indicated that pre-formulated offline gender roles and cultural values governed most participants’ online social exchanges and interactions, although a few participants changed and transferred their behaviors from online (i.e. utopia) to offline (i.e. real life) contexts. The findings of this study suggest that the function of any utopian vision rests on hope and the desire for a better future by inspiring creativity, innovation, and change in the present. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Cycling is increasingly seen as a solution to a large variety of urban problems, and as such continues to inspire innovations that aim to upscale cycling to unprecedented levels. Taken to the extreme, these ideas promise a future ‘Velotopia’ in which cycling constitutes a dominant or single mobility mode. Focusing its attention on Dutch cycling innovations and two recently envisaged cycling utopias by Steven Fleming and Cosmin Popan, the present paper offers a critical exploration of current velotopian urban imaginaries. It does so by tracing their ideological ancestry back to two visionary urban designs of the 20th century: the dense city of speed and efficiency of Le Corbusier, and the endless Babylon of Constant where mobility is a means of discovery, play and human interaction. Our analysis shows that both Corbusian and Constantian understandings of mobility are reflected in current velotopian imaginaries, not only in opposition but also in combination with each other. This combination of Corbusian and Constantian velotopian imaginaries, we suggest, has largely become part of mainstream urban discourses instead of providing a radical alternative to them. 相似文献
