Growing up on the sidelines: identity negotiations of Palestinian youth from ‘collaborating’ families relocated to Israel

By examining the experiences of the children of Palestinian collaborators whose families have relocated to Israel, this study explores how youth negotiate self within the context of marginalisation and cultural dislocation. Due to the actions of their parents, the research participants have become outsiders and outcasts in their Palestinian communities of origin, outsiders in Israel, and outsiders among Israeli-Arabs. Based on qualitative, in-depth interviews with 11 Palestinian male youths, we describe and analyse the experience of identity negotiation in the context of fear and their families’ past deceit. Our findings highlight that the youths’ identities are negotiated by engaging in a dialogue of self on belonging and not belonging that is based on visions of their past, present and future selves. This is accompanied by a forced dialogue with others, explaining who they are in order to fit in with the ‘audience’, a presentation that is then acted out.     

Industrial relations and adjustments to the crisis: A comparative micro‐statistical analysis of France and Great Britain

In this comparative study, the authors analyse the relationships between industrial relations and workforce or wage adjustments in response to the 2007–08 crisis, using two highly comparable establishment‐level surveys conducted in Great Britain (WERS) and France (REPONSE) in 2010–12. Notwithstanding contextual differences in the countries’ productive systems and the timing and impact of the crisis, the relationships between industrial relations and adjustment strategies appear to have been similar (trade union presence not preventing adjustments). Differences in industrial relations are therefore not found to provide an explanation for the different modes of adjustment observed at the macroeconomic level.     

Negotiating Accessibility for Electronic Resources

Abstract

Accessibility of library electronic resources is a must. Its importance derives from professional ethics of librarianship, rising total costs of acquisition, and mounting legal challenges to colleges and universities that fail to provide resources accessible to users with disabilities. Library staff are responsible for ensuring the accessibility of vendor-licensed eresources. This column reviews the accessibility clauses of nine model license agreements for electronic resources. It describes terms that should go into an optimal accessibility clause and creates a composite model clause. It also provides guidance for library staff seeking to negotiate stronger accessibility language into vendor license agreements. Finally, it addresses the impact of accommodation requests on the total cost of acquiring library eresources, concluding with a call to redouble efforts to advocate for greater accessibility and educate both vendors and library staff about its importance.     

Intellectual disability and faith communities: perspectives of Catholic religious leaders

Faith communities create community and are important to many individuals with intellectual disability. However, relatively little is known about how intellectual disability is construed among faith leaders and the inclusion of people with intellectual disability in faith communities. To address these gaps in knowledge, we interviewed 12 Catholic priests, parochial vicars, and deacons to explore: their experiences with individuals with intellectual disability; their beliefs towards the involvement of individuals with intellectual disability within faith communities; and how religion informs their understanding of intellectual disability. We identified five religiously-anchored narratives of intellectual disability, and explore implications for individuals with intellectual disability and faith communities.

同义义场义位的配价研究

主要依据商务印书馆第5版《现代汉语词典》的释义，对黄伯荣、廖序东主编的《现代汉语》、胡裕树主编的《现代汉语》、张斌主编的《新编现代汉语》、邢福义主编的《现代汉语》、杨润陆编的《现代汉语》、唐朝阔、王群生主编的《现代汉语》等6部高校教材中所收同义词的配价情况进行穷尽性研究，得出结论：两个或以上义位的本体和本体之间、本体和变体之间、变体和变体之间，均可构成同义义场。因此，我们研究同义义场，应该明确是此义位的哪个体与彼义位的哪个体构成同义义场。词性不同的各个词，不能构成同义义场，因为在语义领域，它们的主要语义特征不同。无论是哪一种同义义场，属于同一同义义场的各个义位的本体或变体，它们的配价都是相同的。     

为意义而战--论凯瑟琳·贝尔西的后结构主义文学意义观

凯瑟琳·贝尔西是英国著名的后结构主义文学批评家，意义观是其文学批评的重要组成部分。贝尔西的意义观以索绪尔的结构主义语言学为基础，她运用索绪尔的差异性原理批评表现论和摹仿论，认为语言不是透明的，文学作品的意义不在于表达作者的意图或反映客观现实。以此为基础，贝尔西接受能指物质化的观点，把意义的范围从语言扩展到符号，强调符号（包括文学作品）有外延意义和内涵意义，内涵意义不是自然和永恒的，而是由意识形态或话语决定，意识形态的转变导致对文学作品内涵意义的阐释也相应发生变化。由此，贝尔西的意义观实现了从结构主义向后结构主义的转变。     

论《齐民要术》新生复合词中的同义词

《齐民要术》是中古时期口语性较强的一部农业科技著作，书中使用了较多复合词，有的复合词意义相近或相关，彼此聚合成群，形成了不同的同义词词场。这些同义词词场中的复合词在构词上都有相同的特点：即构成复合词的两个语素单用时意义相近或相关，这样的复合词应是当时的语言社团根据已有的并列式构词法创造的新词。在汉语词汇的历时发展中，《齐民要术》中使用的同义复合词呈现出不同的发展结果：由曾经常用的单音词作语素构成的复合词或易于通过隐喻机制形成新义的复合词使用频率相对较高，生命力相对较强，在竞争中也相对较容易发展成汉语中的常用复合词；使用频率低或难以产生隐喻引申义的复合词很容易退出语言交际领域，从而成为汉语词汇历史发展中某阶段的陈迹。

传播符号学及其理论建构

具有百年历史的传播学研究在当代遇到了相当多的理论瓶颈，甚至被某些学者称之为传播学范式的危机。如何化解这种范式危机便成为传播学界孜孜以求的话题。某种程度上，正在成为“显学”的符号学恰恰能够提供这种化解危机的理论资源，符号学作为人文科学的“公分母”，本质上是一门“意义之学”，具体到传播而言，关注的是传播文本的意义建构，而非表象的传播效果。将符号学用于传播研究，能够从深层次揭示传播现象背后的原因。这样的背景下，传播符号学呼之欲出，传播符号学作为一门学科便具有了学理上的合法性与正当性。
