Buffon's needle and the estimation of migration distances

A procedure is suggested for estimating migration distances from data on the proportion of migrants crossing regional boundaries. The method makes use of Buffon's needle, a problem in geometrical probability from the eighteenth century that was originally used as an empirical means of estimating π. The procedure is described for various scenarios that differ in their assumptions about region shape, the spatial distribution of population, and the distribution of migration distances. An application to migration distances in the United States is given, and additional attention is given to the estimation of intraregional migration distances.

The Effect of Brief Functional Relaxation on College Students’ Needle Anxiety During Injected Vaccinations

Abstract

Objective: This study examined the effect of brief functional relaxation (FR) training on needle anxiety (NA) during vaccinations. Participants: From October 2010 through May 2012, 48 undergraduates were recruited through the psychology research participant pool. Methods: Students (N = 48) were randomly assigned to a 15-minute brief FR session delivered via MP3 player or a standard care condition (15 minutes of sitting quietly) prior to receiving injections at the immunization clinic. Measures were completed before (T1) and after (T2) the assigned condition, assessing expected NA, state anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate; and after the injection (T3), self-reported NA during the injection. Results: Unexpectedly, the groups did not differ at T2. However, during the injection, brief FR participants indicated lower self-reported NA (T3) than standard care. Conclusions: Brief FR is a simple, inexpensive technique that may reduce NA in college health settings and help decrease delays in treatment seeking.     

工业缝纫机气浮针杆的柔性联接装置

由于滑槽座导轨副的配合间隙等原因的存在,使得通过刚性连接柱传给工业缝纫机针杆的作用力造成其运动方 向偏移。设计了一种工业缝纫机气浮针杆的柔性联接装置,采用柔性铰链弹性变形产生微小角位移来非平行输出微位 移,用以减弱滑决受到刚性干扰传递给针杆而造成的运动影响,运用ANSYS对其变形及强度进行了校核与分析。结果 表明：ANSYS分析结果与理论设计计算对比验证了设计结构与强度的合理性;该柔性联接装置结构简单,定位精度高, 可以有效地解决刚性传递的干扰,实现精密微位移定位,为今后精密微位移机构的研究提供了很好的研究方法和指导。     

Syringe sociology

In this article I consider the impact of social epistemologies for understanding the object of the syringe. My aim is to examine the process through which the syringe transforms from an injecting device to a tool of social and political inquiry. Paying particular attention to the uses of Foucault, Becker, Bourdieu, Freud and Latour in empirical studies of injecting heroin use, I examine the sociology of the syringe through the lens of habit and habitus, discourse and deviance, mourning and melancholia, attachment and agencement. In pursuing the theory behind the object my goal is to address a sociological object in the making. In so doing I show how the syringe has been significant for social research, social theory, and sociology. It is the difference the object makes that this article seeks to describe. In tracing the epistemology of the syringe I show how the object is important not just for knowledge of addiction but sociology itself.
