Reverse mandated benefits is a government-mandated policy that requires employees to provide their employers with benefits that workers would not provide otherwise. Of course, only those benefits would be mandated that are worth more to employers than they cost, as determined by political authorities. My case for such a policy argues that it is at least as sensible as policies mandating that employers provide benefits to their employees that would not be provided otherwise.  相似文献

There is a critical shortage of publication space available to sociologists, compared to scholars in other fields. This results in invidious publication comparisons to other professionals and damage to the careers of younger sociologists. Further, it results in a loss to the field itself in terms of a lesser likelihood of publication of replications, challenges, and controversial or unorthodox works. Several proposals are made for increasing the publication potential of sociologists. His teaching and research interests have been in social psychology (especially alienation), the family, and the sociology of religion.  相似文献

A complete explanation for union support of mandated benefits must recognize that (1) unions promote the interests of their members primarily by restricting entry into labor markets and (2) those restrictions reduce the competitive advantage which unionized firms realize from efficiently providing fringe benefits. Only by exerting pressure on unionized firms to provide particular fringe benefits and then lobbying government to mandate those benefits at nonunion firms can unions hope to overcome a problem of their own creation.  相似文献

This paper examines efficient user charges on governmentally provided facilities in the presence of rent seeking. We find that the efficient user charge depends upon the relative slopes of the demand curve for the use of the facility and the corresponding marginal cost curve, as well as the level of rent seeking over the revenue raised. Except for a special case, the efficient user charge is found to differ from the charge indicated by the intersection of demand and marginal cost curves. Examples show that actual user charges on government facilities are often set at inefficient levels.  相似文献

Mandating that employers provide job-related benefits is not a free lunch for employees. Despite the claims of some advocates of mandated benofts, economists have long recognized that much of the cost of those benefifs is passed on to employees in lower wages. Long-term care facilities for frail elders are usually based upon the medical model, which is focused primarily on the biological functioning of these elders. The medical model allows for little choice on the part of the residents of these facilities. By way of contrast, culture change is a new approach to long-term care. This model of care seeks to meet a wide variety of needs for the elders and aims to expand their choices. This article presents the observations of college students responding to interactions with frail elders and looks at the implications of culture change for young adult college students.  相似文献

Entry-level employees, particularly those with little education and skill, are often not provided fringe benefits that are included in the compensation packages of their more skilled and experienced counterparts. Under the rubric of improving the well-being of entry-level employees, Congress is considering proposals requiring employers provide speccific benefits to employees. Unfortunately, by substituting political directives for market decision making, mandated benefits impose economic inefficiencies, and most of the resulting costs are borne by the entry-level employees purportedly most helped by mandated benefits. The present study was designed to examine the effectiveness of Fatal Vision Goggles in reducing intentions to drink and drive. Participants performed a field sobriety task and drove in a traffic simulator while wearing the goggles. A regression analysis was performed in order to predict changes in intentions to drink and drive, using typical drinking patterns, perceived likelihood of getting into a collision when drinking and driving, self efficacy, and driving independence as predictor variables. Results showed that drinking and driving intentions were reduced following the use of Fatal Vision Goggles among those that typically drink more during outings, among those that believe the likelihood of collisions when drinking and driving are greater, and among those less likely to drive to achieve independence and autonomy. These results indicate that Fatal Vision Goggles can be an effective tool in altering drinking and driving attitudes among drivers with specific attitudinal and personal characteristics.  相似文献
