Generalized ratio-cum-product type exponential estimator in stratified random sampling

ABSTRACT

In this article, we propose a generalized ratio-cum-product type exponential estimator for estimating population mean in stratified random sampling. Asymptotic expression of the bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimator are obtained. Asymptotic optimum estimator in the proposed estimator has been obtained with its mean squared error formula. Conditions under which the proposed estimator is more efficient than usual unbiased estimator, combined ratio and product type estimators, Singh et al. Low skeletal muscle mass index is associated with function and nutritional status in residents in a Turkish nursing home

Introduction: To determine the prevalence of low muscle mass (LMM) and the relationship between LMM with functional and nutritional status as defined using the LMM evaluation method of European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) criteria among male residents in a nursing home.

Methods: Male residents aged?>60 years of a nursing home located in Turkey were included in our study. Their body mass index (BMI) kg/m², skeletal muscle mass (SMM-kg) and skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI-kg/m²) were calculated. The participants were regarded as having low SMMI if they had SMMI?<9.2?kg/m² according to our population specific cut-off point. Functional status was evaluated with Katz activities of daily living (ADL) and Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL). Nutritional assessment was performed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). The number of drugs taken and chronic diseases were recorded.

Results: One hundred fifty-seven male residents were enrolled into the study. Their mean age was 73.1?±?6.7 years with mean ADL score of 8.9?±?2.0 and IADL score of 8.7?±?4.6. One hundred twelve (71%) residents were aged?>70 years. Thirty-five men (23%) had low SMMI in group aged?>60 years, and twenty-eight subjects (25%) in the group aged?>70 years. MNA scores were significantly lower in residents with low SMMI compared with having normal SMMI (17.1?±?3.4 versus 19.6?±?2.5, p?=?0.005). BMI was significantly lower in the residents with low SMMI compared with normal SMMI (19.6?±?2.7 versus 27.1?±?4.1, p70 years (8.1?±?2.6 versus 9.1?±?1.6, p?=?0.014). In regression analyses, the only factor associated with better functional status was the lower age (p?=?0.04) while the only factor associated with better nutrition was higher SMMI (p?=?0.01).

Conclusions: Low SMMI detected by LMM evaluation method of EWGSOP criteria is prevalent among male nursing home residents. There is association of low SMMI with nutritional status and probably with functional status within the nursing home setting using the EWGSOP criteria with Turkish normative reference cut-off value.

The transportation of freight by truck has been fully deregulated and opened to competition in the European Union, without any quotas or restrictions since 1July 1998. This deregulation has caused problems, mainly due to the delay in adopting common fiscal and social measures, road checks and sanctions for firms that commit offenses. Unscrupulous companies have used this legal vacuum in the EU to factitiously “outsource” activities and dodge national rules and regulations about taxes, labor relations and welfare. As a result, working conditions have worsened as barriers have been lifted. By definition, turnover is high among wage-earners. Truck drivers, semi-skilled, have become interchangeable on the EU marketplace. They can be profitably replaced with drivers from eastern Europe (Poland, Romania, Bulgaria), who are much cheaper and less protected. The spread of such practices is a cause of concern for labor organizations in Europe. Shipping by truck is a textbook case for analyzing how the EU is trying to counter the devious effects arising out of the deregulation of a branch of the economy.     

Efficient separate class of estimators of population mean in stratified random sampling

In this paper, efficient class of estimators for population mean using two auxiliary variates is suggested. It has been shown that the suggested estimator is more efficient than usual unbiased estimator in stratified random sampling, usual ratio and product-type estimators, Tailor and Lone (2012 Tailor, R. and Lone, H. A. (2012). Separate ratio-cum- product estimators of finite population mean using auxiliary information. J. Rajasthan Stat. Assoc. 1(2):94–102. [Google Scholar], 2014) estimators, and other considered estimators. The bias and mean-squared error of the suggested estimator are obtained up to the first degree of approximation. Conditions under which the suggested estimator is more efficient than other considered estimators are obtained. An empirical study has been carried out to demonstrate the performances of the suggested estimator.     

Membrane permeabilization: a common mechanism in protein-misfolding diseases

Protein aggregation--and, more specifically, amyloid fibril formation--has been implicated as a primary cause of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and related disorders, but the mechanism by which this process triggers neuronal death is unknown. Mounting evidence from in vitro studies, cell culture, and animal models of these diseases supports the hypothesis that a structural intermediate on the pathway to fibril formation, rather than amyloid fibrils themselves, may be the pathogenic species. Characterization of these intermediates in solution or upon interactions with membranes indicate that these intermediates form pores and suggests that neurons could be killed by unregulated membrane permeabilization caused by such "amyloid pores."
