We consider the sequential procedures developed by Robbins and Siegmund (1974), Louis (1975) and Zoubeidi (1992) for comparing the means of two treatments. We let the procedures have equal power functions and compare their Bayes and minimax risks using the invariance property of their power functions. For each of several formulations of the problem we determine the most relatively efficient procedure and compute its expected total sample size.  相似文献

Two-stage procedures are introduced to control the width and coverage (validity) of confidence intervals for the estimation of the mean, the between groups variance component and certain ratios of the variance components in one-way random effects models. The procedures use the pilot sample data to estimate an “optimal” group size and then proceed to determine the number of groups by a stopping rule. Such sampling plans give rise to unbalanced data, which are consequently analyzed by the harmonic mean method. Several asymptotic results concerning the proposed procedures are given along with simulation results to assess their performance in moderate sample size situations. The proposed procedures were found to effectively control the width and probability of coverage of the resulting confidence intervals in all cases and were also found to be robust in the presence of missing observations. From a practical point of view, the procedures are illustrated using a real data set and it is shown that the resulting unbalanced designs tend to require smaller sample sizes than is needed in a corresponding balanced design where the group size is arbitrarily pre-specified.  相似文献

In this article we introduce a nonparametric estimator of the spectral density by smoothing the periodogram using beta kernel density. The estimator is proved to be bounded for short memory data and diverges at the origin for long memory data. The convergence in probability of the relative error and Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed estimator automatically adapts to the long- and the short-range dependency of the process. A cross-validation procedure is studied in order to select the nuisance parameter of the estimator. Illustrations on historical as well as most recent returns and absolute returns of the S&P500 index show the performance of the beta kernel estimator. Using data from a sample of 1,099 workers, this paper investigates the determinants of employment and wages for workers in the United Arab Emirates. The paper further examines the wage distribution and the decomposition of the wage gap between the public and the private sectors. Results of the study are consistent with the dual labour market theory and indicate that the labour market in the United Arab Emirates is segmented based on sectors (public versus private) and types of workers (nationals versus non‐nationals). The study concludes with a discussion of the implication of these findings for the effectiveness of labour and economic policy.  相似文献

The concept of causality is naturally defined in terms of conditional distribution, however almost all the empirical works focus on causality in mean. This paper aims to propose a nonparametric statistic to test the conditional independence and Granger non-causality between two variables conditionally on another one. The test statistic is based on the comparison of conditional distribution functions using an L2 metric. We use Nadaraya–Watson method to estimate the conditional distribution functions. We establish the asymptotic size and power properties of the test statistic and we motivate the validity of the local bootstrap. We ran a simulation experiment to investigate the finite sample properties of the test and we illustrate its practical relevance by examining the Granger non-causality between S&P 500 Index returns and VIX volatility index. Contrary to the conventional t-test which is based on a linear mean-regression, we find that VIX index predicts excess returns both at short and long horizons.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a smooth nonparametric estimation for the conditional probability density function based on a Bernstein polynomial representation. Our estimator can be written as a finite mixture of beta densities with data-driven weights. Using the Bernstein estimator of the conditional density function, we derive new estimators for the distribution function and conditional mean. We establish the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators, by proving their asymptotic normality and by providing their asymptotic bias and variance. Simulation results suggest that the proposed estimators can outperform the Nadaraya–Watson estimator and, in some specific setups, the local linear kernel estimators. Finally, we use our estimators for modeling the income in Italy, conditional on year from 1951 to 1998, and have another look at the well known Old Faithful Geyser data.  相似文献

The authors give the exact asymptotic behaviour of the expected average absolute error of a beta kernel density estimator proposed by Chen (1999). They also prove the uniform weak consistency of this estimator for the class of continuous densities.  相似文献

We consider the problem of testing which of two normally distributed treatments has the largest mean, when the tested populations incorporate a covariate. From the class of procedures using the invariant sequential probability ratio test we derive an optimal allocation that minimizes, in a continuous time setting, the expected sampling costs. Simulations show that this procedure reduces the number of observations from the costlier treatment and categories while maintaining an overall sample size closer to the “pairwise” procedure. A randomized trial example is given.  相似文献

We propose a new nonparametric estimator for the density function of multivariate bounded data. As frequently observed in practice, the variables may be partially bounded (e.g. nonnegative) or completely bounded (e.g. in the unit interval). In addition, the variables may have a point mass. We reduce the conditions on the underlying density to a minimum by proposing a nonparametric approach. By using a gamma, a beta, or a local linear kernel (also called boundary kernels), in a product kernel, the suggested estimator becomes simple in implementation and robust to the well known boundary bias problem. We investigate the mean integrated squared error properties, including the rate of convergence, uniform strong consistency and asymptotic normality. We establish consistency of the least squares cross-validation method to select optimal bandwidth parameters. A detailed simulation study investigates the performance of the estimators. Applications using lottery and corporate finance data are provided.  相似文献
