Voluntary contributions and wages in nonprofit organizations

Voluntary work provides a major source of labor for many nonprofit organizations. Consequences of volunteers and paid staff working alongside each other in nonprofits are well documented. This article contributes to this strand of literature and investigates whether the presence of volunteer work influences paid employees' wages in nonprofit organizations. We estimated a multilevel wage equation accounting for personal characteristics of workers and characteristics of nonprofits. The analysis revealed that nonprofit organizations engaging volunteers pay lower wages to their employees. Our findings contribute to the understanding of wage‐setting behavior of nonprofits and improve the methodological approach of empirical research in this field.

Making Sense of Organizational Change: Voices of Older Volunteers

The role of voluntary and community sector organizations in the delivery of public services is increasing and these changes bring new responsibilities and benefits to organizations that have the capacity to participate. There are concerns within the sector about the implications for citizenship and participation. The sector is highly dependent on volunteers yet little is known about how organizational change in response to new relationships with the statutory sector impact upon the commitment and well-being of people who volunteer. This paper addresses that gap in knowledge for older volunteers. Drawing upon collaborative research with a voluntary organization in the north of England, the authors explore the meanings and aspirations of volunteering for older people, and explain how and why changes associated with closer engagement with public service delivery and less grant dependency can be disempowering for them.

中国青年志愿者激励机制的现状与发展研究

现代社会中,志愿者扮演的角色越来越重要,志愿者这一重要的社会资源越来越得到人们的重视,如何更好地开发和利用志愿者资源成为人们关注的话题.本文在对我国志愿服务现状进行分析的基础上提出了志愿服务保障体系法律化、志愿服务激励人性化的志愿者激励机制的建设构想.     

Facing Death: Buddhist and Western Hospice Approaches

This article draws on ethnographic data to examine how moral person‐hood, emotions, and social relationships are constructed quite differently within two organizations with the similar goal of holistically caring for the dying. The analysis shows how the moral rhetoric and related practices at a mainstream hospice encourage volunteers to esteem a static conception of the self‐as‐character, whereas the Buddhist approach requires volunteers to engage in a process of transcending a self that is continually being worked on. The analysis points to paradoxes in the hospice conceptions of a “good death” and offers critical reflection on the assumption that Western and Buddhist approaches to hospice care are largely equivalent. Organizational, structural, and phenomenological strands of symbolic interactionist thought are drawn on to interpret these findings.     

论发达国家体育志愿者实施的基本特点

发达国家体育志愿者起步早，已基本形成了完善的实施体系，在梳理发达国家体育志愿者实施的过程时，从各国的具体实施形态中，提炼出共性的、关键的因素，上升为基本特点加以比较分析，实际上是对实施过程的规律性的初步认识。体育志愿者发展的规模和水平，既与社会经济发展程度有联系，又与社会的价值观、精神追求、教育普及等因素有关联。中国体育志愿者发展方兴未艾，2008年北京奥运会极大地推动了体育志愿者发展。     

What's In It for the Volunteers?

This article reports on a social return on investment (SROI) analysis of volunteers of the Good Food Market program, a food access initiative run by FoodShare Toronto, one of Canada's largest food‐justice organizations. Unlike conventional SROI research, which typically focuses on the entire ecology of an organization or program, this article focuses solely on isolating the return volunteers receive on their investment of time, skills, energy, and the like—an SROI of volunteering. The article reviews the challenges of adapting the SROI methodology to the context of volunteer benefits and finds that ultimately SROI is a useful tool for articulating the value of volunteering.     

刘澜波对东北军走上抗日道路的历史贡献

九一八事变后,刘澜波便与东北军结下了不解之缘。他帮助东北军爱国将领黄显声组建东北抗日义勇军,在白山黑水之间展开同日军的武装斗争。东北军入关后,他受党组织委派,长期在东北军中秘密开展党的统战工作,促使东北军走上联共抗日的道路。在全面抗战爆发后,刘澜波在周恩来的直接领导下,领导东北救亡总会继续关注与支持东北军抗战,使东北军成为全国抗日战场的重要组成部分,有效地配合了全国抗战。     

The Boy Scouts of America: Slowly Changing

ABSTRACT

The Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board (BSA) recently changed its longstanding policy of excluding gay youth up to the age of 18. Gay participants of its coed Venturing program would be allowed to be members until the age of 21. However, lesbians and homosexuals are still not permitted to be troop leaders. This article discusses the evolution of the change in BSA’s policy, discusses the timeline of other proposals in regard to BSA’s acceptance of gay youth, and suggests that changes in public opinion and the reaction of BSAs stakeholders lead to changes in the BSA policy. The BSA made a change to become more compatible with the environment in which it operates.     

民办高校大学生志愿者队伍建设研究

大学生志愿服务工作是实现高校育人功能的有效途径,民办高校在创新思想政治教育工作方面落后于公办大学,但在大学生志愿服务工作领域与公办大学处于同一起跑线上。文章通过对民办高校大学生志愿者队伍建设的研究,突出大学生志愿服务工作对于加强和改进民办高校思想政治教育工作的重要性。
