Contested news values and media performance during the Umbrella Movement

Social crises are a huge challenge to the performance of the media. The norms and routines of news making with which journalists comply can become problematic in the context of intensive public sentiment and empathy. News values, including the sacred belief in objective reporting, are questioned in the light of controversies over editorial judgment within and outside the newsroom. I examine the contested news values that manifested in the Umbrella Movement of Hong Kong in 2014. In particular, I focus on the arguments and deliberations regarding news objectivity, which involved several parameters of the performance of the media during this social crisis.

本文通过对于人类学中的一个重要概念“representation”的梳理,探讨了其在人类学不同阶段理论背景下的不同内涵以及在人类学本体论、认识论、方法论方面的意义,透过“representation”反映出人类学理论从现代主义到后现代主义的发展过程中,尤其是后现代主义思潮下人类学“表述危机”的理论论争的根源和问题的实质。     

How young Chinese depend on the media during public health crises? A comparative perspective

Under the framework of media system dependency theory, this study investigates and compares traditional media dependency and Internet dependency in public health crisis situations in the context of Mainland China. 373 college students participated in the survey. Empirical data demonstrated that, during public health crises: (1) traditional media and the Internet play different roles for individuals; (2) higher level of threat perception leads to more intense Internet dependency, but does not do the same to traditional media dependency; (3) individuals’ Internet dependency intensity is higher than their traditional media dependency intensity; and (4) the Internet may influence the behavior of young Chinese more directly.     

晚清政府在新疆治理面临的危机与挑战

由于晚清政府在新疆治理措施的日趋腐败,出现经费紧缺、民众起义、沙俄入侵等情形,使新疆自清朝统一之后出现的六、七十年的稳定局面产生了严重的危机,使清朝政府在新疆的统治面临严峻的挑战。后虽经爱国官兵的努力平复新疆,但原先治理新疆的军府制度难以为继,进而调整为与内地治理方式一致的行省制度,为国家的统一作出了贡献。     

Computer Assisted Life Review

Abstract

A positive life review process is crucial to the resolution of the last of Ericson's developmental life crises, ego-integrity vs. despair. This paper describes and discusses: (1) the importance of the life review process and life review therapy; (2) the nature of idea processors, a type of computer software; and (3) ways that idea processors can be useful in facilitating a therapeutic life review process for elderly individuals.     

Impacts of the Triple Global Crisis on Growth and Poverty: The Case of Yemen

Yemen is an oil‐exporting and food‐importing country with the highest levels of poverty in the Middle East and North Africa. The impacts of the triple crisis are likely to further complicate pre‐existing conditions of conflict, oil depletion and governance failure. Using a dynamic CGE model, this article finds that oil‐driven growth in 2008 dominated the negative growth impacts of the food crisis, but that growth was not pro‐poor. The financial crisis of 2009 slowed growth sharply and raised the poverty rate to 42.8%, up from 34.8% in 2005/6. Poverty continues to be higher in rural areas, where almost half the population live in poverty.
