Role of Schema Theory in Discourse Reading Comprehension

Illustrates the origin and fundamental concepts of schema theory and points out that the comprehension of discourse reading depends upon the existing schemata stored in readers' mind, which include linguistic schemata, content schemata and rhetorical schemata. Through the analysis of the main reasons for failure in the reading comprehension of discourse, it emphasizes that readers are required not only to possess the relevant schemata but also to be able to activate them when necessary. Therefore, it is suggested that in foreign language teaching, teachers should endeavor both to enrich students' schemata and to inspire their abilities for activating relevant schemata in comprehension.
