Nominal Groups in English as Labels for Text Organization

Nominal groups can serve as a cohesive device for text construction. Apart from conceptual meanings, they also possess procedural information, which makes them different from other lexical devices. Based on the framework of Relevance Theory, this paper analyses the properties of nominal groups and the functions they perform in text organization. It argues that nominal groups as schematic and strategic vocabulary have great cohesive strength for text organization and coherence. The paper also discusses the pedagogic significance of nominal groups which can shed some light on text analysis and understanding.
