竟陵派对公安派性灵说的修正,本是针对公安派末流之弊而发。但竟陵派讲为诗为文“期在必厚”,实际上是要“独抒”以“深幽孤峭”为宗、“以古人为归”的“性灵”。这就抽掉了公安派性灵说以我为主的主体性,去掉了公安派所说性灵包含的人性的宽泛性、鲜活性和世俗性。其说虽然自成一派,却未能尽祛公安末流之弊,反而从根本上替换了公安派性灵说的灵魂。
