The Advent and Presence of Rhetoric Perspectives in the Literary Criticism of the "New Period"

The advent of rhetoric perspectives in literary criticism has inner connections with literary creation, conceptions and methods of criticism and has taken place at a time when the position of traditional literary conceptions were being shaken, when factors concerning literary forms were emphasized and when 20th century western formalist literary theories were introduced into China. Before the mid-part of the 1980s, rhetoric criticism was concentrated on comments about the fiction of Wang Meng and later to that of Ma Yuan and other avant-garde writers. The appearance of literary criticism rhetoric perspectives in the "new period" marked rise in the quality of contemporary Chinese literary criticism.
