on the Function of Shanghai in the Development of Modern Chinese Music

The modern Chinese music,influenced by western music,has been engendered and gradually developed from the end of the 19th century to 1940's.In this process,Shanghai has performed an important role.First,Shanghai became the first laboratory of new music education in China owing to its special tradition of Shanghai-style culture.Second,the flourishing music activities in Shanghai Foreign Settlement bred a lot of Chinese musicians.Last,the Chi-nese popular music has produced and prospered in Shanghai,influenced by the existence of a great amount of bourgeois,strongly commercial environment and powerful modern media.
