Abstract:Generally speaking, the meanings of English titles are unequivocal. While using an English title, the user/author has his/her pragmatic implication in mind. Whether a reader/translator can see the implication and see it in a right way is a matter that should be considered. On the level of translating, if a translator can get the implication, whether he/she can render it in another language is a problem. By investigating the sir used in Vanity Fair , both its English and Chinese versions, the pragmatic implication of the title sir in specific social context and the way to translate it into Chinese are examined.
Keywords:English titles  pragmatic implication  pragmatic translation
