Bibliometric Analysis of Island Tourists Research Based on Web of ScienceTM

Taking 403 academic articles of island tourists research which are retrieved from Web of ScienceTM Database, the paper draws maps of the core author groups, major research institutions, keywords co-occurrence and references co-citation by Citespace, a visual software for literature analysis. The paper finds that island tourist research began in 1971. It was not until the recent five years that it becomes one of research hotspots. Secondly, these developed countries such as the United States and Spain are in the forefront of studies of island tourist, so we can reinforce cross-unit and cross border cooperation in the future. Thirdly, the research methods are diverse with quantitative research and case studies being mainstream. The research objects are mainly concentrated on the island with relative mature tourism development; scholars pay more attention on these tourists in a particular market segment rather than mass tourism. Fourthly, the knowledge cluster includes island tourists’ satisfaction, island tourists’ influence, island tourists’ demand and urban tourism. The research content is gradually diversified, but the perception of island tourists, the willingness to pay for island tourism, and the willingness of island tourists to revisit are still the main research directions. Fifthly, Chinese scholars still lack international discourse right in this subdivision research area. There are only a few articles related Chinese tourists on the outbound islands, which centered on the characteristics of Chinese tourists and the perception of destination image based on quantitative analysis
