The Growth of Ko-Lao Hui in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River

From the 70's to 90's of the 19th century, Ko-Lao Hui (Elder Brothers Society) witnessed a rapid growth in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Zen Guofan disbanded the Hunan Army, which led to the rapid expansion of the society. Ko-Lao Hui originated in Hunan and Hubei Provinces during the reign of TongZhi. In scale and strength it overtopped Tian-Di Hui, ZhaiJiao and other secret societies, which were less active and in relative quiescence. It stretched from the Hu-Guang district to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River roughly in the middle and late periods of GuangXu's reign. And it acted a chief role in resisting foreign religions.
