Rexroth's View on Poetic Translation

Based on Zheng Yanhong’s work in 2009,this paper is a further probe into Rexroth’s theory on poetic translation.Zheng believes that sympathy is a key notion in Rexroth’s theory,however,she fails to point out what lays at the foundation of his view.Therefore,her paper leaves something to be desired.Judged from his ＂The Poet as Translator＂ and ＂On Translating Roman Verse＂,Rexroth’s theory of sympathy is built on inspiration and equality.Both the author and the translator rely on inspiration to do their work,they do not hold a master-slave relation to each other.In Rexroth’s opinion,poetic creation is also a translation with the result that the author is also a translator and the source language is a target language as well.Equality lies between translators and translating languages when the concepts of dominating author and source language are dissolved.Rexroth’s theory is creative in that it has radically changed the traditional understanding of Translation Studies.
