On Childhood in Dubliners and Rites of Passage

James Joyce depicted the Dubliners as " a spiritual history for Ireland ", displaying the spiritual crux of Irish society in the sequence of " childhood, adolescence, adulthood and social life ".Based on his statement, critics home and abroad have made exhaustive studies on the collection from the perspective of modernism, spiritual paralysis or epiphany, feminism, religion, social background, aesthetics and art of narration,e tc.However, one important aspect of it still remains to be fully explored : rites of passage.Therefore, this paper make a comprehensive study on its childhood by analyzing the rites of passage the protagonists have gone through, showing that the three short stories about childhood plays decisive role in the structure and thesis of the whole collection.
