Multi-voicedness of Possession

Possession is essentially a polyphonic novel in which multitudes of independent and unmerged voices and consciousnesses are presented.This paper holds that the pluralistic social and academic backgrounds of the author necessitates the polyphonic feature of her novels.Taking as examples the dialogues on historical knowability in postmodernism and realism,the dialogues between different historical periods and the dialogues between various voices from different perspectives,this paper intends to tackle the colorful polyphonic features of Possession from all sorts of voices and consciousnesses to reveal the cause of controversies and conflicts in the criticism around the novel.
