On the Trends and Evolution of Li Boyuan's Thoughts

A new generation of Chinese intellectuals came into being in the late Qing Dynasty. Because of limitations of special historical situations of the time, there were strong political traces in their way of life and trends of thought. Some, however, gradually went from the social center to the social fringe, and displayed their own worth in the capacity of independent critics. It can be said that they were the earliest liberalists, and Li Boyuan was a representative. The evolution of his thought went through three stages, namely the metamorphosis of his old thought, the emergence of his new thought and the formation of his major thought. The revelation of the evolution of his unique spiritual world will lay a solid foundation for reevaluating the literary works of this master of the condemnation novel.
